Pay for the OpenAI API with Satispay: OpenAI's rules and GPT in euros without a credit card

Neither chatgpt.com nor platform.openai.com accepts Satispay. For subscriptions on chatgpt.com, OpenAI lists credit and debit cards (plus, in the European Economic Area, bank debit through Link where available), while API credits can be purchased only in dollars and only with a standard credit or debit card: prepaid cards are excluded (OpenAI Help Center, read on October 3, 2026). However, you can use GPT models through the API and pay with Satispay in euros: you top up a prepaid balance on Kunavo, an independent gateway compatible with the OpenAI API, and in your code change only the key and base_url. The minimum is $10, with no subscription; the credit remains until you use it, and failed calls are not deducted. That balance pays for API calls: it does not activate ChatGPT Plus or add credits to your OpenAI account. Prices and payment methods checked on October 3, 2026.

Short answer: what is paid for with what

With OpenAI, there are two separate accounts, and neither accepts Satispay. The third option is Kunavo.

• ChatGPT subscriptions on chatgpt.com: no Satispay, no PayPal. OpenAI elenca carte di credito e di debito per tutti i paesi e, per Regno Unito e SEE, l'addebito bancario tramite Link «dove disponibile» (OpenAI Help Center, letto il October 3, 2026). Se ti abboni dall'app di ChatGPT per iPhone o Android, l'abbonamento lo gestiscono l'App Store o Google Play, con addebiti in valuta locale (same page): quali metodi accettino lo vedi nel tuo account dello store.
• API credits on platform.openai.com: no Satispay. Gli acquisti di crediti API sono limitati al dollaro statunitense (multicurrency billing page) e servono una carta di credito o una carta di debito standard: le prepagate non si possono usare (article about declined cards).
• GPT through the API via Kunavo: yes, with Satispay in euros. If you open the payment page from Italy, Stripe displays it in euros and Satispay is among the options. You pay Kunavo, not OpenAI: the balance is used to call GPT (and Claude) models with a Kunavo key, charged per token.

OpenAI precisa anche che ChatGPT e la piattaforma API hanno sistemi di pagamento separati e che l'uso dell'API si paga a parte rispetto all'abbonamento (OpenAI Help Center). Plus quindi non include crediti API; e il saldo Kunavo, all'inverso, non vale dentro ChatGPT.

What about PayPal?

Not on OpenAI's website, and not on Kunavo. PayPal non compare nell'elenco dei metodi di OpenAI per gli abbonamenti ChatGPT comprati su chatgpt.com (help center, letto il October 3, 2026), e per i crediti API OpenAI indica solo carte di credito o di debito standard (article about declined cards). Chi si abbona dall'app paga con i metodi del proprio account App Store o Google Play, che qui non abbiamo verificato. I titoli del tipo «PayPal arriva su ChatGPT» parlano d'altro: l'accordo annunciato a fine ottobre 2025 porta PayPal dentro ChatGPT, a partire dal 2026, per pagare gli acquisti fatti in chat con Instant Checkout; l'articolo non parla né di abbonamenti né dell'API (heise, October 28, 2025).

Kunavo does not accept PayPal either. If you were looking for it because you do not want to use a credit card, the most direct alternative is Satispay, which deducts the amount from the app's Available balance. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link also work, but each still uses a card underneath: a debit card is sufficient.

Postepay and prepaid cards: why OpenAI rejects them

Se paghi online con una Postepay, parti da qui. Poste Italiane presenta Postepay Evolution come una carta prepagata e ricaricabile, con IBAN associato, del circuito Mastercard (poste.it, letto il October 3, 2026). Per i crediti API OpenAI scrive che le carte prepagate non si possono usare e che sono supportate solo carte di credito o di debito standard (OpenAI Help Center). Non abbiamo provato una Postepay sul checkout di OpenAI, quindi non sappiamo come venga classificata ogni singola carta; ma se la tua viene rifiutata, la regola sulle prepagate è il primo motivo da considerare.

On the same page, OpenAI lists other reasons for rejection:

• some banks automatically block certain online or international transactions;
• la verifica 3D Secure non è stata completata. Per gli acquisti di ChatGPT OpenAI avverte anche che a chi risiede nello SEE può essere chiesta l'autenticazione forte del cliente, la SCA (multicurrency page);
• la carta è emessa da una banca fuori dalle regioni supportate. Con una carta italiana non è questo il problema: Italia, San Marino e Città del Vaticano sono tra i paesi supportati dall'API (developers.openai.com, letto il October 3, 2026).

With Kunavo, you can avoid using a prepaid card: Satispay pays from your Available balance, and a debit card also works. Kunavo does not exclude prepaid cards by choice, but we have not verified that every Postepay passes the payment checks: if yours is rejected, use Satispay.

Paying OpenAI directly: what it involves

If you have a credit or debit card that OpenAI accepts, buying credits from OpenAI is a reasonable choice, and the minimum is lower than Kunavo's. The rules, from OpenAI Help Center (read on October 3, 2026):

• automatic top-up is enabled by default during setup; if you do not want it, you must turn it off;
• i crediti acquistati scadono dopo un anno e non sono rimborsabili, salvo quanto previsto dalla legge o dal contratto o un'eccezione approvata da OpenAI (same page);
• dopo aver aggiornato il metodo di pagamento dell'API può comparire un addebito in sospeso di $5: è una pre-autorizzazione temporanea, stornata entro 7 giorni (pre-authorization article, in inglese).

GPT models with a Kunavo key

Kunavo è un gateway indipendente: non è OpenAI né un suo partner. Espone un'API compatibile con quella di OpenAI (e con quella di Anthropic), quindi con la stessa chiave e lo stesso saldo chiami i modelli GPT qui sotto e i modelli Claude, pagando a token. Prezzi in dollari per milione di token; la colonna di destra è quanto fa pagare OpenAI oggi (OpenAI API pricing, letto il October 3, 2026). On output, the models in the table cost 60 to 65% less on Kunavo than OpenAI's standard price, excluding promotions.

OpenAI offers a promotional price for GPT-5.6 Sol of $4,00 / $20,00 at least until November 21, 2026; the standard price is $5,00 / $30,00. Even compared with the promotional price, GPT-5.6 Sol's output on Kunavo costs approximately 40% less. Models suspended on Kunavo are not included in the table. From Satispay to your first GPT response

Prima di cominciare, apri l'app Satispay e guarda la Disponibilità: è da lì che parte il pagamento, e se non basta conviene ricaricarla adesso. Ricaricarla dall'IBAN collegato costa 1 € se la vuoi istantanea (pochi secondi), mentre quella standard è gratuita ma impiega da 1 a 5 giorni lavorativi (Satispay support, letto il October 3, 2026). Poi:

1. Registration. Open a Kunavo account with an email address or Google; no one asks for payment details until you decide to top up.
2. Amount. In Billing, choose how much to top up, starting at $10. The figures are in dollars, like the per-token rates; you will see the euro equivalent on the next screen. Above a certain threshold, there is a bonus: with $100 you receive $110, con $1.000 ricevi $1.200, con $5.000 ricevi $6.250.
3. Stripe Checkout. Collegandoti dall'Italia la pagina di pagamento è in euro, ed è solo in quel caso che Satispay figura tra le opzioni. Selezionalo: Stripe ti manda sul sito di Satispay (Stripe documentation), dove scrivi il numero di telefono del tuo account o scansioni il QR code, e approvi con Submit nell'app (Satispay support, letto il October 3, 2026).
4. Credit. Stripe conosce l'esito di un pagamento Satispay appena lo approvi (Stripe documentation) e Kunavo carica il saldo solo dopo la conferma. Se in Billing non vedi ancora la cifra, ricarica la pagina invece di ripetere il pagamento: un secondo pagamento non annulla il primo, si somma.
5. API key. In /app/keys, generate a key sk-kn-. You see it in full only once, so save it somewhere secure (an environment variable or a secrets manager) before closing the window.

To check that everything works, make a request to GPT-6 Sol from the terminal:

In projects that already use the openai library for Python, nothing needs to be rewritten: pass the Kunavo key and the new endpoint to the client, and the calls remain the same as before.

The same key also runs Claude and Claude Code: set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com (without /v1) and the key in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN, which works immediately, while with ANTHROPIC_API_KEY Claude Code in interactive mode asks for confirmation the first time; Kunavo accepts the key in both ways. The euro conversion and an example calculation

Kunavo fissa i prezzi in dollari, come OpenAI. A trasformarli in euro è Stripe, e nel cambio che applica c'è un ricarico del 2–4% pagato da chi compra (Stripe, Adaptive Pricing, letto il October 3, 2026): sui $10 della ricarica minima fanno da $0,20 a $0,40. È il costo del pagamento in euro, e quindi anche di Satispay, che compare solo lì. Chi preferisce evitarlo può pagare in dollari con carta, Apple Pay, Google Pay o Link e lasciare il cambio alla propria banca, con le condizioni di quella banca.

An example, token arithmetic only: a chat-style request with 1.000 input tokens and 300 output tokens costs approximately $0,002 on GPT-6 Sol ($0,80 / $4,00), so the $10 minimum top-up is enough for approximately 5.000 requests of this kind. At today's OpenAI rate for GPT-6 Sol, the same request costs approximately $0,005. Actual spending depends on the length of prompts and responses and on caching.

What you find at checkout when connecting from Italy

• Satispay, provided that the amount is shown in euros. Each payment must be approved in the app.
• Card: Visa, Mastercard e gli altri circuiti principali, di credito o di debito. La carta Satispay è una Mastercard di debito (Satispay support); sul checkout di Kunavo non l'abbiamo ancora usata.
• Apple Pay from Safari or iPhone and Google Pay from Chrome or Android, if you have already set it up.
• Link, Stripe's wallet that remembers the card from one purchase to the next.

Mancano PayPal, l'addebito diretto SEPA dal conto (al suo posto va bene la carta di debito della stessa banca) e Klarna, che Kunavo offre solo a chi paga dagli Stati Uniti. Contanti e bollettini postali non sono previsti. Nemmeno Pay by Bank compare dall'Italia: Stripe non elenca l'Italia tra i paesi in cui funziona, e nel checkout di Kunavo è riservato a chi paga dal Regno Unito, dall'Irlanda e dalla Finlandia (Stripe, Pay by Bank, letto il October 3, 2026).

One clarification: Satispay has been available in Kunavo's checkout since October 3, 2026, and as of today no one has yet topped up a balance with it. Stripe offers it for payments in euros; if you do not see it in your case, the other methods listed above remain available.

Before paying: four things to know

• With Satispay, you always top up manually. Stripe tratta Satispay come un pagamento singolo, che non resta memorizzato per addebiti futuri (Stripe documentation). La ricarica automatica di Kunavo, che scatta quando il saldo scende sotto una soglia, parte solo da una carta salvata o da Link. Della carta Satispay (Mastercard di debito, per i piani Plus, Metal e Velvet, che attinge alla Disponibilità) non sappiamo ancora come si comporti con la ricarica automatica, perché non l'abbiamo provata.
• No Italian invoice. Kunavo does not issue VAT invoices or electronic invoices through SDI. In Billing, the list of top-ups remains available with the date, amount, and status; if your accountant asks for a document, write to contact@kunavo.com.
• You pay for API calls, not OpenAI. The balance does not become a ChatGPT subscription, cannot be used in the app, and does not appear among the credits on platform.openai.com.
• The minimum is set in dollars. $10, so the amount in euros changes slightly from one day to the next. OpenAI starts at $5, less than here.

Is Satispay missing from the methods? Quasi sempre il checkout si è aperto in dollari: succede se navighi con una VPN o un proxy che esce fuori dall'Italia, perché Stripe sceglie valuta e metodi nel momento in cui carica la pagina, e Satispay accetta solo euro (Stripe). Spegni la VPN e riparti da Billing. Se invece è l'app a rifiutare il pagamento, di solito la Disponibilità non copre l'importo.
