A practical guide for Italian developers who want to run the Claude API in production. Price difference compared with Anthropic directly, payment methods available from Italy, latency from Milan and Rome, GDPR, and electronic invoicing—everything you need to know before your first call.
First call in 5 seconds
Kunavo is compatible with the OpenAI wire protocol. If your code already uses the OpenAI SDK, migrating requires a one-line change in base_url. In Python:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
api_key="sk-kn-...",
base_url="https://api.kunavo.com/v1", # cambia solo questa riga
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="claude-sonnet-4-6",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Presentati brevemente in italiano."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)It’s identical in Node.js / TypeScript:
import OpenAI from "openai";
const client = new OpenAI({
apiKey: process.env.KUNAVO_API_KEY!,
baseURL: "https://api.kunavo.com/v1",
});
const resp = await client.chat.completions.create({
model: "claude-opus-4-7",
messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Riassumi questo articolo in 3 punti." }],
});
console.log(resp.choices[0].message.content);Registration is free: top up from $10, pay only for what you use (pay-as-you-go), and your balance never expires—more than enough to try Claude Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5.
Price difference compared with Anthropic directly
Claude models on Kunavo cost 30% less than Anthropic’s official price. Claude Sonnet 4.6 costs $3,00 for input / $15,00 for output per million tokens directly from Anthropic — on Kunavo: $2,10 / $10,50, or 30% less. With prompt caching, rereading the stable prefix is billed at 10% of the input price, or about $0,21 per million tokens. All prices are at /pricing.
Latency from Milan / Rome
Kunavo runs in a single US-East region (Ashburn, Virginia), behind an anycast edge that terminates TLS near you. The edge shortens the TLS handshake, not the trip across the Atlantic: from a cloud server in Milan (AWS Milan, OVH, Aruba), round-trip time is dominated by the physical distance to the US East Coast, plus the model’s own inference time. Calling Anthropic directly takes exactly the same route. Streaming responses arrive with the same time-to-first-token as upstream—no buffering, no batching.
Payment—card, Apple Pay, Satispay
We use Stripe natively. Methods available in Italy:
- Cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PostePay (via the Visa network)
- Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link (one-click payment)
- Satispay—available when checkout is displayed in euros
Top-ups are displayed in USD, but Stripe converts them to your currency on the payment page—this is exactly how Pix works in Brazil. SEPA Direct Debit is nevertheless not included: it is not enabled on our account, so it never appears at checkout. Any card issued in Italy works normally, including debit cards linked to your SEPA account; if you pay in dollars, your bank performs the conversion.
Minimum top-up: $10 USD (~€9). This is not a subscription but a prepaid wallet—the balance never expires.
VAT and electronic invoicing
The standard checkout does not show VAT or ask for a VAT number; an invoice showing VAT is not generated automatically. Your top-ups, with date, amount, and status, appear in your billing dashboard; if you need a receipt for your accounting records, email contact@kunavo.com.
Electronic invoicing through the SDI (Sistema di Interscambio): Kunavo currently does not issue electronic invoices in XML format to Italy’s SDI. For invoicing needs, email sales@kunavo.com.
GDPR and data residency
Routing logic runs at the gateway in the single US-East region (Ashburn), not at the anycast edge, which only terminates TLS. Billing and account data are stored in a single primary database, with encrypted daily volume snapshots. We forward requests to upstream APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google)—these providers process prompt content according to their own terms. Anthropic and Google offer Zero Data Retention options to their enterprise customers, but Kunavo offers neither ZDR routing nor a data processing agreement (DPA / Article 28 GDPR), nor data residency in the EU: requests are processed in the United States and forwarded to upstream providers. If your team needs a DPA, ZDR, or data residency in the EU, enter into a contract directly with the model provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google enterprise terms).
