How to pay for the OpenAI API — adding a card, prepaid credits, and resolving payment failures

The OpenAI API works by purchasing credits in advance and then using them. This summarizes payment methods, why domestic cards may be declined, and alternative payment routes.

The OpenAI API is prepaid. Register your payment details and purchase credits from $5; your balance is then deducted as you use it, and purchased credits expire after one year. If payments with a Korean card keep failing, you can top up through Kunavo from $10 to use the same GPT models with a card, Apple Pay, or Link, and, when checkout is displayed in KRW, with KakaoPay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, Samsung Pay, or Korean cards; the balance does not expire. Kunavo’s GPT pricing is 60~65% cheaper than OpenAI’s list price.

OpenAI API payment methods at a glance

  • The minimum purchase is $5; the default is $10.
  • Purchased credits expire after 1 year and cannot be extended.
  • Refunds are not available except where required by law or contract, or in approved exceptions.
  • Auto-reload is turned on by default during initial setup, so turn it off if you do not want it.
  • The maximum balance an account can hold is determined by its trust tier, based on usage and payment history.

When domestic card payments are blocked

  1. Enable overseas payments. (KB Kookmin Card overseas usage guide).
  2. Block overseas transactions in local currency (DCC). (KB Kookmin Card DCC guide).
  3. Check the international brand. Domestic-only cards without an international brand such as Visa or Mastercard cannot be used with overseas merchants.

Alternative: Use GPT with Kunavo

These methods are for topping up your Kunavo balance to use the GPT API; they cannot be used for API credits paid directly to OpenAI or for ChatGPT subscription payments.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pay for the OpenAI API?

New API accounts use prepaid billing. After adding payment details, you buy credits up front, and the balance is deducted as you use the API. According to OpenAI Help, the minimum purchase is $5 and the default is $10. Purchased credits expire after 1 year and cannot be extended.

I added a payment method and was charged $5.

When you add or change an API payment method, OpenAI places a temporary $5 authorization hold on your credit card. It is for verification, not a credit purchase or usage charge, and is canceled within 7 days.

Should I turn off auto-reload?

Turn it off if you do not want it. According to OpenAI Help, auto-reload is turned on by default during initial setup, so your card is charged automatically when your balance drops below the threshold. If you keep it on, it is safer to set a monthly recharge limit as well.

What if my domestic card does not work?

Check these in order: whether overseas payments are blocked, whether overseas transactions in local currency (DCC) are blocked, and whether the card is domestic-only without an international brand. Overseas payments must be enabled in your card issuer's app. If DCC applies, the dollar payment is converted to local currency again, with a fee.

Can I pay for the GPT API with KakaoPay or Toss?

OpenAI’s checkout uses cards (according to OpenAI Help). On Kunavo, when checkout is displayed in KRW, you can top up from $10 with KakaoPay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, Samsung Pay, or domestic cards to use the same GPT models. The KRW amount includes a 2–4% Stripe currency-conversion fee. Toss Pay is not accepted, and mobile payments cannot be used for automatic top-ups. The balance does not expire, and failed requests are not charged.
