You cannot buy OpenAI API credits with UPI: OpenAI's help center says API credits are sold in US dollars only and need a standard credit or debit card (checked October 3, 2026). UPI at OpenAI is for ChatGPT Go and Plus subscriptions on the web, and ChatGPT is billed separately from the API, so a UPI-paid ChatGPT plan includes no API usage. You can still call GPT models over the API with money paid by UPI: top up a prepaid balance at Kunavo, an independent OpenAI-compatible API gateway whose Stripe checkout offers UPI when it shows the amount in rupees. The minimum top-up is $10, the balance never expires, and the same key also calls Claude. This pays for API access through Kunavo; it does not buy platform.openai.com credits or a ChatGPT plan.
The question has sat on OpenAI's developer forum since June 2023 without an official answer (forum thread). Below: what each OpenAI bill accepts, what Kunavo's checkout offers in India, and every step from signup to the first GPT call. Prices and payment methods checked October 3, 2026.
The short answer, bill by bill
- ChatGPT Go or Plus on the web: UPI, yes. OpenAI's multi-currency billing article says UPI is available for Go and Plus and not offered for Pro or Business (OpenAI help center, checked October 3, 2026).
- OpenAI API credits on platform.openai.com: no UPI. The same article says purchases of API credits are limited to USD, and UPI payments are made in rupees (Stripe's UPI documentation lists INR as its only currency). OpenAI's card-decline article adds that only standard credit or debit cards can buy API credits, not prepaid cards (OpenAI help center). ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems (OpenAI help center), so a ChatGPT plan paid by UPI does not carry over.
- GPT models over the API through Kunavo: UPI, yes. Kunavo's Stripe checkout offers UPI when it shows the top-up in rupees. The money becomes a prepaid Kunavo balance that calls GPT and Claude models. You are paying Kunavo, not OpenAI.
The “OpenAI integrated UPI” headlines are about ChatGPT, not the API: UPI for ChatGPT plans, and an agentic-payments pilot by NPCI, Razorpay and OpenAI for paying for shopping inside ChatGPT with UPI (reported October 13, 2025; Razorpay's announcement gives ordering groceries from BigBasket as its example, checked October 3, 2026). Neither changes how API credits are bought.
What paying OpenAI directly involves
If you hold a card that pays abroad, buying credits from OpenAI is a reasonable route. Its prepaid API billing, as the help center describes it (checked October 3, 2026):
- The minimum credit purchase is $5, lower than Kunavo's $10 minimum; the default amount is $10 (prepaid billing article).
- Purchased credits expire after one year.
- Auto-reload is on by default when you first set up billing; switch it off if you do not want the card charged automatically.
- Updating the API payment method can put a temporary $5 authorization hold on the card, reversed within 7 days (OpenAI help center).
- Prepaid cards cannot buy API credits, and OpenAI's decline article notes that some banks block certain online or international transactions by default, alongside 3D Secure failures (OpenAI help center).
Indian cards have also hit problems on OpenAI's side. In September 2024 an OpenAI staff member said on the developer forum that an India payment failure came from OpenAI's 3DS setup with Stripe under India's e-mandate rules (forum post). That is a 2024 report, quoted as background on why some developers in India look for a route that needs no card at all.
GPT models a UPI-funded Kunavo key can call
One Kunavo key calls these GPT models through the OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat/completions endpoint. Per token, Kunavo's GPT rates run 60–65% under OpenAI's list prices. Rates are per 1M tokens; the right-hand column is what OpenAI charges today.
| Model | Kunavo input / output | OpenAI today input / output |
|---|---|---|
GPT-6 Astra (gpt-6-astra) | $4.00 / $20.00 | $10.00 / $50.00 |
GPT-5.6 Sol (gpt-5-6-sol) | $2.00 / $12.00 | $4.00 / $20.00 (promotional) |
GPT-5.5 (gpt-5-5) | $2.00 / $12.00 | $5.00 / $30.00 |
GPT-5.6 Terra (gpt-5-6-terra) | $0.70 / $4.20 | $2.00 / $12.00 |
GPT-6 Sol (gpt-6-sol) | $0.80 / $4.00 | $2.00 / $10.00 |
GPT-6 Luna (gpt-6-luna) | $0.04 / $0.20 | $0.10 / $0.50 |
OpenAI is charging a promotional $4.00 / $20.00 for GPT-5.6 Sol at least through November 21, 2026; its standard rate is $5.00 / $30.00. Against the promotional rate, Kunavo's GPT-5.6 Sol is about 40% lower on output. OpenAI's rates come from its API pricing page (checked October 3, 2026). Caching, batch and worked examples per model are in the GPT API pricing guide, and every model on one sheet is on the pricing page. Models that are paused on Kunavo are not listed.
What you need
An email address, any UPI app linked to your bank account, and $10, the minimum top-up, shown in rupees on the checkout page. No card is asked for at any point. It is a prepaid balance: no subscription, no monthly fee, and the balance never expires. Failed requests (4xx/5xx) are not billed.
Step by step
1. Create an account
Sign up with email or a Google account. No card is asked for at signup.
2. Pick an amount on the Billing page
Open Billing and choose a top-up. Amounts are set in US dollars because per-token rates are in dollars; the rupee figure appears on the next screen, before you confirm anything. Larger top-ups add a bonus: pay $100, get $110; pay $1,000, get $1,200; pay $5,000, get $6,250.
3. Choose UPI on the Stripe checkout
The button opens a checkout hosted by Stripe. When it shows the amount in rupees, UPI appears in the list of payment methods next to card and Link. A Google Pay or Apple Pay button, if your device shows one, is a card wallet that charges a card saved in it; to pay from your UPI app, pick UPI.
4. Approve the payment in your UPI app
On a desktop, scan the QR code with your UPI app; on a phone, Stripe redirects you to the UPI app (Stripe's UPI documentation, checked October 3, 2026). Check the rupee amount and approve it.
5. Wait for the balance
Stripe describes UPI as a real-time payment. Kunavo credits the balance when Stripe confirms it, and records each top-up once. UPI is newly offered on this checkout, so if the balance has not appeared, refresh Billing before paying again: a second payment is recorded as a second top-up.
6. Create a key and make the first GPT call
Create a key at /app/keys. It starts with sk-kn- and is shown once, so copy it before closing the dialog. Then:
# Once the top-up has landed, this is the first GPT call.
curl https://api.kunavo.com/v1/chat/completions \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $KUNAVO_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "gpt-6-sol",
"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Reply in one line: did the UPI top-up work?"}]
}'Code written for the OpenAI SDK needs only a new base_url and key:
# The OpenAI SDK you already use, pointed at a different base_url.
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
api_key="sk-kn-...", # create one at kunavo.com/app/keys
base_url="https://api.kunavo.com/v1", # the only line that changes
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="gpt-6-sol",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello from India!"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)For Codex CLI, the Codex CLI setup shows the configuration, and the Codex pricing guide works out what a coding task costs. The same key and balance run Claude too, including Claude Code through ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL (Claude Code setup).
What it costs in rupees
Kunavo's prices are in US dollars. When the checkout is shown in rupees, Stripe converts at a rate that includes a 2–4% conversion fee, which the buyer pays (Stripe Adaptive Pricing documentation, checked October 3, 2026). Paying in dollars by card avoids that fee, but UPI only appears in a rupee checkout, and your bank may add its own foreign-exchange markup to a dollar card payment.
An illustration, assuming a chat-style request of 1,000 input and 300 output tokens on GPT-6 Sol: at $0.80 / $4.00 per 1M tokens, one request costs about $0.0020, so the $10 minimum covers roughly 5,000 such requests. The conversion fee is added to the rupee price you pay, not taken from the dollar balance. At OpenAI's own rate for GPT-6 Sol, the same request costs about $0.0050. Real workloads vary with prompt length, output length and caching.
Limits to know
- UPI needs a rupee checkout. Stripe offers UPI only when the payment is presented in INR. A VPN, or a network outside India, can switch the checkout to another currency.
- ₹1,00,000 per UPI payment. Stripe caps a single UPI payment at ₹1,00,000 (Stripe), so the $5,000 top-up has to go by card or Link; whether a $1,000 top-up fits depends on the rupee amount the checkout shows.
- No auto-recharge on UPI. Auto-recharge works only with a saved card or Link, so UPI top-ups are made by hand each time. Auto-recharge has not been tested with Indian-issued cards under India's e-mandate rules.
- No GST invoice. Kunavo does not issue GST invoices or any other tax invoice. Billing lists each top-up with its date, amount and status.
- Refunds. Refunds are case by case under the billing policy, which lists the cases it covers, such as an accidental double top-up. On Stripe's side, a UPI payment can be refunded up to 60 days after it was made (Stripe).
- What is not offered. The rupee checkout shows card, Link and UPI, so net banking, PayPal and cash are not available. RuPay is not among the card brands confirmed for this checkout (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, UnionPay); UPI is the route that needs no card.
- This is the API, not ChatGPT. A Kunavo balance pays for GPT and Claude API calls. It does not pay for ChatGPT Go, Plus or Pro, and it adds nothing to a platform.openai.com account.
If UPI does not appear
UPI appears only when the checkout is in rupees. Stripe picks the currency from where you appear to be, so a VPN or proxy pointing outside India can switch it to dollars. Turn the VPN or proxy off and open the checkout again from Billing, on the connection you will pay from.
Card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, UnionPay) and Link stay available whatever the currency. If something else is wrong, write to contact@kunavo.com.
Paying for Claude rather than GPT? The same balance covers it. Pay for Claude with UPI walks through it from the Claude side, including Claude Code; paying for the Claude API without a credit card covers the other routes, and every payment method by country is in the billing docs.
FAQ
Can I pay for the OpenAI API with UPI?
Not on platform.openai.com. OpenAI's help center says API credits can only be purchased in US dollars and only standard credit or debit cards are supported for them (checked October 3, 2026). You can call GPT models over the API with money paid by UPI through Kunavo, an independent OpenAI-compatible gateway: its Stripe checkout offers UPI when it shows the top-up in rupees, and the balance pays for GPT and Claude API calls. That does not add credits to an OpenAI account.
How do I pay for the OpenAI API in India without a credit card?
OpenAI's API billing needs a standard credit or debit card and refuses prepaid cards, per its help center (checked October 3, 2026). Without a card, one route is a Kunavo account: sign up, open Billing, pick an amount from $10, choose UPI on the Stripe checkout when it shows rupees, approve the payment in your UPI app, then create an API key and call GPT models such as GPT-6 Sol with the OpenAI SDK by changing its base_url.
ChatGPT Plus accepts UPI. Does that cover the API?
No. OpenAI offers UPI for ChatGPT Go and Plus on the web (not Pro or Business), but its help center says ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems (checked October 3, 2026). A ChatGPT subscription, however it is paid, includes no API usage; API usage is billed separately, on platform.openai.com.
Didn't OpenAI integrate UPI?
The UPI news from October 2025 is an agentic-payments pilot by NPCI, Razorpay and OpenAI that lets people pay for shopping inside ChatGPT. It is a consumer commerce feature and does not change how OpenAI API credits are bought: in US dollars, by standard credit or debit card, according to OpenAI's help center (checked October 3, 2026).
Is a UPI top-up on Kunavo charged in rupees or dollars?
Kunavo's prices are set in US dollars. When the Stripe checkout is shown in rupees, the rupee amount appears before you confirm, and that is what your UPI app debits. Stripe's exchange rate includes a 2–4% conversion fee, which the buyer pays; paying in dollars by card avoids it, but UPI only appears in a rupee checkout.
What is the minimum top-up, and does the balance expire?
The minimum is $10. It is a prepaid balance with no subscription and no monthly fee, it never expires, and failed requests (4xx/5xx) are not billed. Larger top-ups add a bonus: pay $100, get $110; pay $1,000, get $1,200; pay $5,000, get $6,250. OpenAI's own purchased API credits expire after one year, according to its help center (checked October 3, 2026).
Is there a limit on how much I can pay with UPI?
Yes. Stripe caps a single UPI payment at ₹1,00,000 (Stripe documentation, checked October 3, 2026), so the $5,000 top-up has to be paid by card or Link. Auto-recharge also needs a saved card or Link, so UPI top-ups are made by hand each time.
Will I get a GST invoice?
No. Kunavo does not issue GST invoices or any other tax invoice. The Billing page lists each top-up with its date, amount and status.
