Paying for the OpenAI API with iDEAL or Bancontact: what OpenAI and ChatGPT accept, and GPT without a credit card

OpenAI does not list iDEAL or Bancontact anywhere as payment methods. API credits can be purchased only in dollars with a credit or debit card, and ChatGPT Plus can be paid for on chatgpt.com with a card (in the EEA, also with a bank debit via Link where supported). If you want to use GPT with an API key, there is another option: top up prepaid credit in euros with Kunavo using iDEAL or Bancontact.

No: OpenAI’s help center does not mention iDEAL or Bancontact as payment methods anywhere. You pay for ChatGPT Plus on chatgpt.com with a credit card or debit card, and in the EEA also with a bank debit through Link (where supported); API credit on platform.openai.com can only be purchased in dollars, with a standard credit or debit card. Betaalmethoden and prijzen gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026.

Short answer: where can you pay with iDEAL?

  • ChatGPT Plus or Go on chatgpt.com: no iDEAL.
  • ChatGPT through the app on iPhone or Android: it depends on the store. The App Store or Google Play then handles payment, using the methods on your store account. The overview by country is below.
  • OpenAI API on platform.openai.com: no iDEAL.
  • GPT through Kunavo: yes, with iDEAL or Bancontact. You add prepaid credit in euros, which is consumed per token, and use it to call GPT-6 Astra, GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.5, GPT-5.6 Terra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. That is what most of this page is about.

ChatGPT Plus through the app: what the App Store and Google Play accept

If you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus in the app, you pay Apple or Google, not OpenAI, using the payment methods on your store account. These differ by country:

StoreNetherlandsBelgium
App Store (Apple)iDEAL | Wero, but only for adding funds to your Apple Account balance · PayPal · Apple Pay · payment through your mobile provider (KPN, Odido, Telfort, Vodafone) · most credit and debit cards · Apple Account balanceBancontact · PayPal · Apple Pay · payment through your mobile provider (BASE, Orange, Proximus, Telenet) · most credit and debit cards · Apple Account balance
Google PlayiDEAL is listed, but “cannot be used to pay for subscriptions”; you can use it to increase your Play balance, and according to Google, you can pay for subscriptions with Play balanceBancontact is not on the list

Bronnen: Apple, payment methods for your Apple Account, Google Play Netherlands en Google Play Belgium, gelezen op October 3, 2026.

Do you actually need iDEAL? A debit card also works with OpenAI

A Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard from a Dutch or Belgian bank is a standard debit card.

At OpenAI, do pay attention to these points, all from the same help center:

  • No prepaid cards for API credit; only standard credit and debit cards.
  • Purchased credits expire after 1 year and are not refunded, unless legally or contractually required or an approved exception applies.
  • Maestro, V PAY, and Bancontact/Maestro: OpenAI does not name card brands, only “standard credit or debit cards.” We were unable to verify whether such a card works there.

How to pay for GPT with iDEAL or Bancontact through Kunavo

A credit card is not required. You need an email address or Google account, in the Netherlands an account with a bank that supports iDEAL, and in Belgium a Bancontact card or the Bancontact app. Plan on at least $10; you already see that amount in euros at checkout.

  1. Account. Create a Kunavo account with your email address or through Google. No card is requested, and the dashboard opens immediately.
  2. Amount. Under Billing, choose how much you want to top up. Kunavo charges per token in dollars, so these amounts are also shown in dollars; the conversion to euros follows on the payment page, before you confirm anything.
  3. Payment method. Je belandt op een betaalpagina van Stripe. Vanuit Nederland of België hoort die het bedrag in euro te tonen, and pas dan staat iDEAL (NL) of Bancontact (BE) tussen de opties, naast kaart and Link en, afhankelijk van browser and toestel, Apple Pay of Google Pay. Stripe voert iDEAL sinds het eerste kwartaal van 2026 als “iDEAL | Wero” and stapt in 2026 and 2027 over op Wero (Stripe documentation about iDEAL), dus schrik niet van die naam op de knop.
  4. Confirm.
  5. Balance. Stripe immediately knows whether an iDEAL or Bancontact payment succeeded, and only after that confirmation does the amount appear in your balance under Billing. If you do not see it yet, reload the page instead of paying again: each payment is counted once, so a second payment simply becomes additional credit.
  6. Key. Create a key at /app/keys. It starts with sk-kn- and is visible only once, so save it immediately.

Your first request to GPT

A single curl shows whether the key and balance work:

terminal
curl https://api.kunavo.com/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KUNAVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "gpt-6-sol",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Antwoord in één regel: werkt het?"}]
  }'

If you already have code for the OpenAI SDK, change only the key and base_url:

eerste_aanroep.py
# Code die al voor de OpenAI-SDK geschreven is: alleen sleutel en base_url veranderen.
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    api_key="sk-kn-...",                    # maak je aan op kunavo.com/app/keys
    base_url="https://api.kunavo.com/v1", # de enige regel die verandert
)

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="gpt-6-sol",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hallo!"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

If you use Codex CLI, the configuration is in the Codex CLI guide; you can find other programs through the quickstart.

The same credit also pays for Claude, and therefore Claude Code. Kunavo reads the key from both Authorization: Bearer and x-api-key; use ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN in Claude Code, because it applies immediately, while ANTHROPIC_API_KEY must first be approved once in interactive mode:

terminal
# Claude Code op hetzelfde tegoed, per token afgerekend.
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com # alleen het domein, zonder /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL=claude-opus-5-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL=claude-haiku-4-5

The full explanation is in the Claude Code guide and in Installing Claude Code.

What GPT through Kunavo costs

On output pricing, Kunavo is 60–65% below OpenAI’s regular price for these models, excluding promotional prices.

ModelKunavo (input / output)OpenAI today (input / output)
GPT-6 Astra (gpt-6-astra)$4,00 / $20,00$10,00 / $50,00
GPT-5.6 Sol (gpt-5-6-sol)$2,00 / $12,00$4,00 / $20,00 (promotional price)
GPT-5.5 (gpt-5-5)$2,00 / $12,00$5,00 / $30,00
GPT-5.6 Terra (gpt-5-6-terra)$0,70 / $4,20$2,00 / $12,00
GPT-6 Sol (gpt-6-sol)$0,80 / $4,00$2,00 / $10,00
GPT-6 Luna (gpt-6-luna)$0,04 / $0,20$0,10 / $0,50

OpenAI charges a promotional price of $4,00 / $20,00 for GPT-5.6 Sol until at least November 21, 2026; the regular price is $5,00 / $30,00. At that promotional price, Kunavo’s output price for GPT-5.6 Sol is approximately 40% lower. Models temporarily unavailable through Kunavo are not included in the table. You can find all models and rates on the pricing page, and calculate it with your own quantities in the OpenAI API cost calculator.

A calculation example. One chat request with 1.000 input tokens and 300 output tokens costs approximately $0,002 on GPT-6 Sol; with the minimum top-up of $10, you can make about 5.000 of them. At OpenAI, the same request costs approximately $0,005 today. Your actual usage depends on the length of your prompts and answers.

Euros or dollars?

For larger top-ups, you receive additional credit: $100 becomes $110, $1.000 becomes $1.200 and $5.000 becomes $6.250.

Payment methods in Kunavo checkout (the Netherlands and Belgium)

Kunavo is not OpenAI and not an OpenAI partner, but an independent API gateway: with one key and one prepaid balance, you call both GPT and Claude, paying per token. Stripe determines which payment methods you see based on your country and the checkout currency. For buyers in the Netherlands and Belgium, they are:

Payment methodWhereHow you pay
iDEALNetherlands, amount in eurosRedirected to your own bank and confirmed there; the button is sometimes called “iDEAL | Wero”
BancontactBelgium, amount in eurosConfirm with the Bancontact app or your Bancontact card, from a Belgian account
Card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay)EverywhereCredit or debit card; a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard is sufficient
Apple PaySafari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, outside IndiaWith a card from Apple Wallet
Google PayChrome and Android, if Google Pay is set up, outside IndiaWith a card stored in Google Pay
LinkEverywhere except IndiaWith a card you previously saved in Link, Stripe’s payment button

For the sake of completeness: iDEAL en Bancontact appear in the checkout because Stripe offers them for payments in euros, but no Kunavo top-up has yet been completed using either one. If the method for your country is unavailable, you can use card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link in the same checkout.

This is how iDEAL and Bancontact work according to Stripe (read on October 3, 2026):

Payment resultImmediatelyImmediately
Recurring paymentsOnly through SEPA direct debit (not enabled at Kunavo)No

Because iDEAL and Bancontact do not provide chargebacks, email contact@kunavo.com immediately if you have a problem with a payment.

What to keep in mind

  • Top up manually. iDEAL and Bancontact are one-time payments here (see the table above). If you want the balance to be topped up automatically, that is only possible with a saved card or Link.
  • No invoice from Kunavo. No VAT invoice either; under Billing, you can see the date, amount, and status for each top-up. If your company needs a VAT invoice, check with OpenAI itself (see above).
  • API only. The balance pays for API traffic to GPT and Claude. ChatGPT Plus, the ChatGPT app, and your account on platform.openai.com are unaffected.
  • Minimum in dollars. $10 at Kunavo versus $5 at OpenAI; the amount in euros depends on the exchange rate at the time you pay.
  • A button that changes its name. While Stripe is transitioning iDEAL to Wero (2026–2027), the payment button in the checkout may have a different name.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay for the OpenAI API with iDEAL?

Not directly with OpenAI. OpenAI’s help center says API credits can only be purchased in dollars, using a standard credit or debit card; prepaid cards do not count (read on October 3, 2026). It is possible through Kunavo: this is an independent API gateway, not OpenAI and not an OpenAI partner, where you top up prepaid credit in euros with iDEAL or Bancontact and use it to call GPT models through the OpenAI SDK. That money does not go into your account at platform.openai.com.

Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus with iDEAL?

Not on chatgpt.com: for website subscriptions, OpenAI lists cards and, in the EEA, a bank debit through Link where supported, and nowhere iDEAL. In the iPhone app, the App Store handles payment, and Apple only allows iDEAL | Wero in the Netherlands to add funds to your Apple Account balance; whether that balance then pays for your ChatGPT subscription is shown in the App Store payment window. On Android, Google Play says iDEAL cannot be used for subscriptions in the Netherlands, but can be used to increase your Play balance, and that you can pay for subscriptions with Play balance. Kunavo credit does not pay for ChatGPT Plus.

Can I pay for OpenAI or ChatGPT with Bancontact?

Not with OpenAI: the help center does not mention Bancontact anywhere. It is available through the App Store: Apple lists Bancontact as a payment method for a Belgian Apple Account, and Apple handles payment for a subscription in the ChatGPT app. Google Play does not list Bancontact for Belgium. If you want GPT with an API key, Kunavo’s checkout offers Bancontact to buyers in Belgium, provided the payment page is in euros.

How do I pay for the OpenAI API without a credit card?

With OpenAI itself, a debit card also counts: a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard from a Dutch or Belgian bank is a standard debit card, and the Netherlands and Belgium are on OpenAI’s list of supported countries. A prepaid card is rejected for API credit. If you have no card at all, you can use Kunavo with iDEAL (Netherlands) or Bancontact (Belgium), starting at $10. You are not tied to a subscription, the credit does not expire, and a failed request (4xx/5xx) costs nothing.

Can I pay for GPT through Kunavo with PayPal, Tikkie, or Klarna?

No. PayPal, SEPA direct debit, Tikkie, Riverty (formerly AfterPay), and a regular bank transfer are not available at checkout, and Klarna is only available to buyers in the United States, so not even when paying in dollars. Without a credit card, you can use iDEAL, Bancontact, or your debit card; that debit card also works through Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link.

How much do I pay in euros, and can I automatically top up with iDEAL?

Kunavo prices in dollars, but you confirm an amount in euros: Stripe converts it at a rate valid for 24 hours and including 2–4% conversion fees charged to you. At $10, that comes to $0,20 to $0,40. Automatic top-ups are only possible with a saved card or Link. Repeated iDEAL payments are processed by Stripe through SEPA direct debit, which is not enabled at Kunavo; Bancontact does not support recurring payments. So you make each top-up with iDEAL or Bancontact yourself.

Do I get a VAT invoice?

Not from Kunavo: no invoices are issued, including no VAT invoice. What you do have is the overview under Billing in the dashboard, showing the date, amount, and status for each top-up; if your accountant has questions, email contact@kunavo.com. If your company needs a VAT invoice, check with OpenAI itself: an API organization can enter its VAT number in the billing preferences, and Billing history contains the available invoices or receipts. OpenAI explicitly promises invoices only to Enterprise customers; with prepaid credits, it may also be a receipt.

Will my existing OpenAI code or Codex CLI work with a Kunavo key?

Yes. In the OpenAI SDK, you only change the key and base_url to https://api.kunavo.com/v1; the model name is, for example, gpt-6-sol. For Codex CLI, the configuration is in the Codex CLI guide. Usage is charged per token from the same credit you topped up with iDEAL or Bancontact.
