How much does Claude Code cost? Subscription or API key per token, with a calculation example and payment with iDEAL or Bancontact

You do not pay anything separately for Claude Code itself: you pay for the underlying models in one of two ways. With a Claude subscription, Pro costs $20 per month ($17 per month with an annual subscription), and Max costs $100 or $200 per month. These prices are in dollars and exclude VAT (the standard rate in the Netherlands and Belgium is 21%), the free subscription does not include Claude Code, and on the web you can pay only with a credit or debit card. With an API key, you pay per token, with no monthly fee, and your usage does not count toward subscription limits. At Kunavo, Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1,40 / $7,00 per million input and output tokens (30% below Anthropic's list price); an example session from Anthropic's documentation therefore costs approximately $0,258. You can top up from $10, using iDEAL (Netherlands) or Bancontact (Belgium).

Subscription or API key: the two options side by side

How much does a Claude subscription cost?

De prijzen hieronder staan op claude.com/pricing (gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026), in dollars. Een Nederlandse versie van die pagina bestaat niet. De eurobedragen zijn alleen een omrekening ter oriëntatie, tegen de ECB-referentiekoers van October 2, 2026 en zonder btw.

• Free: geen Claude Code. Ook de installation documentation zegt dat je een Pro-, Max-, Team-, Enterprise- of Console-account nodig hebt.
• Pro: $20 per month with monthly billing (≈ € 17,82), or $17 per month with an annual subscription, for which you pay $200 upfront (≈ € 178,17). Claude Code is included.
• Max: op de prijspagina staat ‘vanaf $100’. Volgens de explanation of Max kost Max 5x $100 per maand (≈ € 89,09) en Max 20x $200 per maand (≈ € 178,17), met 5 of 20 keer zoveel gebruik per sessie als Pro. Claude Code zit erbij.
• Team: a Standard seat costs $20 per month with annual billing or $25 with monthly billing; a Premium seat costs $100 per month with annual billing or $125 monthly.

VAT. Volgens de prijspagina zijn alle bedragen exclusief belasting. Anthropic berekent de btw op basis van je factuuradres (help center), en het algemene btw-tarief is 21%, zowel in Nederland (Dutch Tax and Customs Administration) als in België (Your Europe). Volgens de explanation of Pro rekent Anthropic in lokale valuta waar dat wordt ondersteund, verschilt de maandprijs per regio, en zit de belasting in sommige regio’s al in het getoonde bedrag terwijl die elders bij het afrekenen wordt opgeteld. Welke van de twee voor Nederland of België geldt, en of je er in euro betaalt, vermelden die pagina’s niet; de eurobedragen hierboven zijn dus geen prijsopgave. Het bedrag dat je bij het afrekenen ziet, is wat telt (alles gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026).

Limits. Bij Pro wordt je sessielimiet elke vijf uur gereset, en daarnaast geldt een weeklimiet (explanation of Pro). Bij Pro en Max delen Claude en Claude Code dezelfde limieten: wat je in de chat doet, telt mee voor Claude Code en andersom (Claude Code with Pro or Max, gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026). Payment. Volgens de Claude billing FAQ accepteert Anthropic voor abonnementen op het web alleen creditcards en debitcards. Sluit je het abonnement af in de iOS- of Android-app, dan loopt de betaling via de App Store of Google Play, en volgens de uitleg over Max kunnen de prijzen in de app afwijken. iDEAL en Bancontact kun je op de website van Anthropic dus niet gebruiken.

How much does Claude Code cost through the API (per token)?

Via de API is er geen maandbedrag; je betaalt per token. De tabel toont dollars per miljoen tokens: links de lijstprijs van Anthropic (claude.com/pricing, gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026), rechts de prijs bij Kunavo (uit de modelcatalogus, gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026). De cacheprijzen gelden voor de cache van 5 minuten.

Claude Code stuurt bij elk verzoek het hele gesprek mee. Met prompt caching wordt die geschiedenis tegen het goedkope cache-read-tarief gerekend (cost documentation, gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026), en daardoor bepaalt de cacheprijs een groot deel van de rekening: in het rekenvoorbeeld hieronder zijn cache-reads ongeveer 51% van de kosten bij Claude Sonnet 5. Example calculation: how much does one Claude Code session cost?

Dit voorbeeld gebruikt de uitvoer van het commando /usage uit de Anthropic's cost documentation (gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026), zodat je het zelf kunt narekenen. De aannames:

• The token counts come directly from the example: 1.200 input, 5.300 output, 940.000 cache reads, and 50.000 cache writes. In the documentation, this is a session with Sonnet 4.6, which costs $0.55 at list price.
• The same tokens were calculated for the four models in the table; only the price per token differs.
• Cache writes at the 5-minute rate: with an API key, the cache is retained for 5 minutes by default according to the documentation (one hour with a subscription, as long as you do not use usage credits).
• Thinking tokens are counted as output, so the longer the model thinks, the larger the output portion.
• Background requests are not included; according to the documentation, they usually cost less than $0.04 per session.

With Claude Sonnet 5, this session costs approximately $0,258 via Kunavo, of which approximately 51% is for cache reads. With Claude Opus 5.5, it is approximately $0,384, with Claude Opus 5 approximately $0,645, and with Claude Haiku 4.5 approximately $0,129.

This is an example calculation, not an actual bill or a maximum: your sessions may be much longer or shorter. With /usage, you can see the four token counts for your current session in Claude Code; enter them in this script for your own estimate:

Note: the dollar amount shown by /usage is calculated locally by Claude Code using the list price. If you work through Kunavo, the usage overview in your Kunavo dashboard is authoritative for what is deducted from your balance. For comparison, the same documentation cites averages from enterprise environments: approximately $13 per developer per active day and $150–250 per developer per month, with 90% of users staying below $30 per active day. These are averages from business environments; the documentation does not say which prices were used to calculate them.

Subscription or API: which is right for you?

• If you use Claude Code occasionally, or a lot one month and little the next: choose an API key. Based on the example calculation above, $20 at Kunavo is enough for approximately 77 such sessions with Claude Sonnet 5, and a month with no usage costs nothing.
• You use it intensively every day and stay within the limits: dan kan een abonnement voordeliger zijn. Voor Pro betaal je met een creditcard of debitcard. • They do not stack. Volgens de Anthropic gateway documentation gebruikt Claude Code een ingestelde key zoals ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN in plaats van je claude.ai-login; de limieten van je abonnement gelden dan niet en je betaalt per token aan de eigenaar van de key. Haal je de variabele weg, dan gaat Claude Code terug naar je opgeslagen claude.ai-login (connect the gateway, gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026).

Pay with iDEAL or Bancontact (API option only)

Kunavo is een API-gateway die compatibel is met de API’s van Anthropic en OpenAI; Claude Code kun je er direct op aansluiten. Je waardeert je saldo op via een afrekenpagina van Stripe. De prijzen staan in dollars, en Stripe toont het bedrag in euro. Volgens de documentation about Adaptive Pricing zit in die omrekenkoers een valutatoeslag van 2–4% die de koper betaalt; wie in dollars betaalt, betaalt die toeslag niet, al kan je bank dan zelf een wisselkoers en kosten rekenen. iDEAL werkt volgens dezelfde pagina alleen in euro (gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026). Ter oriëntatie: het minimum van $10 is ongeveer € 8,91 tegen de ECB-koers van October 2, 2026, vóór de toeslag van Stripe.

The following payment methods are offered at checkout:

• iDEAL (Nederland): je wordt doorgestuurd naar je eigen bank om de betaling te bevestigen, en de uitkomst is direct bekend (Stripe on iDEAL, gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026). Mogelijk staat het in de checkout onder de nieuwe naam ‘iDEAL | Wero’.

PayPal, SEPA direct debit, Tikkie, Riverty (formerly AfterPay), and a regular bank transfer are not available; Klarna is available only to buyers in the United States.

1. Create a Kunavo account.
2. Under Billing, top up your balance: choose an amount (minimum $10) and pay with iDEAL, Bancontact, or one of the other methods.
3. Under /app/keys, create a key; it starts with sk-kn-.
4. Set the key in Claude Code as described below, and check the connection with /status.

• At least $10 per top-up; larger amounts receive extra credit: betaal $100, krijg $110; betaal $1.000, krijg $1.200; betaal $5.000, krijg $6.250.
• Prepaid: no monthly fee, the credit does not expire, and failed requests (4xx/5xx) are not charged.
• Ter vergelijking: prepaid API-credits die je rechtstreeks bij Anthropic koopt, vervallen een jaar na aankoop (help center, gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026).
• These payment methods are only for your Kunavo balance. You cannot use them to pay for Claude Pro or Max.

Connect Claude Code to Kunavo

ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN wordt meegestuurd als Authorization: Bearer-header (documentation about environment variables, gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026). Je kunt dezelfde waarden ook in het env-blok van je persoonlijke ~/.claude/settings.json zetten, niet in het settings-bestand van je project, zodat je key niet in git belandt. Staat dezelfde variabele zowel in je shell als in het settings-bestand, dan wint het settings-bestand (connect the gateway).

Why pin the models? Volgens de documentation about model configuration (gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026) wijzen aliassen naar de aanbevolen versie voor je provider en veranderen ze in de loop van de tijd. Op de API van Anthropic wijzen het standaardmodel en de alias opus nu naar Opus 5.5, en de alias sonnet naar Sonnet 5.5. Zonder vastgezette modellen draait Claude Code dus standaard op Claude Opus 5.5, dat in het rekenvoorbeeld hierboven duurder uitvalt dan Claude Sonnet 5. Sonnet 5.5 biedt Kunavo niet aan: zonder ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL krijgen /model sonnet, de uitvoeringsfase van opusplan en subagents met model: sonnet een 404. Met de configuratie hierboven wijst de alias sonnet naar Claude Sonnet 5 en de alias opus naar Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5); dat laatste vereist Claude Code v2.1.280 of nieuwer, dus werk een oudere versie eerst bij met claude update. Wil je even een ander model uit de tabel gebruiken, typ dan de volledige naam in /model, bijvoorbeeld claude-opus-5. ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL bepaalt ook welk model achtergrondtaken gebruiken.

Then start claude and run /status: the Anthropic base URL line should show https://api.kunavo.com, and the Auth token line should refer to ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN. More settings are available in the Claude Code integration.

How to keep the bill low

1. Let the cache do its work. Met een API-key blijft de cache standaard maar 5 minuten bewaard. Ben je langer weg, dan wordt bij je eerste bericht de hele context opnieuw verwerkt (cost documentation). Zolang je doorwerkt, betaal je voor de geschiedenis het veel lagere cache-read-tarief.
2. Use /clear between separate tasks. Claude Code sends the entire conversation with each request; the documentation recommends starting over with /clear when you begin working on something else.
3. Choose the model for each task. According to the documentation, Sonnet handles most programming tasks well and is cheaper than Opus; reserve Opus for difficult architectural decisions and multi-step reasoning.
4. Haiku for simple work. ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL is set to Claude Haiku 4.5 in the configuration above, and you can set model: haiku for simple subagents.
5. Less thinking for simple tasks. Thinking tokens are counted as output; use /effort to lower the thinking effort.

Good to know

• Kunavo does not issue invoices or VAT invoices. Under Billing, you can see your top-up history with the date, amount, and status.
• Automatic top-ups work only with a saved card or Link. With iDEAL or Bancontact, you top up manually each time.
• This is a pay-per-token API, not a Claude subscription: with ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN set, Claude Code does not use your subscription limits, and the costs are deducted from your Kunavo balance.
