Pay for Claude with iDEAL or Bancontact: Claude Pro, the API, and Claude Code without a credit card

For Claude Pro and Max, Anthropic accepts only cards on claude.ai and does not accept PayPal. For the Claude API and Claude Code, there is another option: a prepaid balance topped up with iDEAL or Bancontact, with the amount shown in euros at checkout.

You cannot pay for Claude Pro or Max on claude.ai with iDEAL or PayPal: for website subscriptions, Anthropic accepts only credit and debit cards and does not accept payment services such as PayPal. Betaalmethoden and prijzen gecontroleerd op October 3, 2026.

Short answer: can you pay for Claude with iDEAL?

It depends on which Claude you are paying for. The subscription and the API are separate products with separate payments.

  • Claude Pro or Max on claude.ai: no. Voor abonnementen die je op de website koopt, accepteert Anthropic alleen credit- of debitcards (Anthropic Help Center, gelezen op October 3, 2026). Geen iDEAL, geen Bancontact, geen PayPal.
  • Subscription through the Claude app on iPhone or Android: depends on the store.
  • Claude API and Claude Code with an API key: yes, through Kunavo. You top up a prepaid balance with iDEAL or Bancontact, in euros, and it is consumed per token. This is not the Pro subscription but API access to the same Claude models, and that is what the rest of this page covers.

Claude Pro or Max through the app: what the App Store and Google Play accept

You can subscribe to Claude Pro or Max on claude.ai even without a credit card: with a debit card. If you do not want to use any card at all, you can only use the Claude app on iPhone, iPad, or Android. The store then processes the payment using its own payment methods, which vary by country:

Bronnen: Apple, payment methods for your Apple Account, Google Play Netherlands en Google Play Belgium, gelezen op October 3, 2026.

About iDEAL in the App Store: Apple lists iDEAL | Wero in the Netherlands only for “personal deposits” to your Apple Account balance. Whether that balance then pays for your Claude subscription in the app is not specified per app on Apple's page: check the App Store payment screen before depositing. The same applies to PayPal in Google Play Belgium: only that payment screen will show whether it is available for a subscription.

Subscription (in-app purchase)Price in the Dutch App Store
Claude Pro, per month€ 22,00
Claude Pro, per year€ 249,99
Claude Max 5x, per month€ 149,99
Claude Max 20x, per month€ 299,99

These are Apple's store prices; we have not compared them with claude.ai. An in-app subscription is paid for through Apple or Google, not Kunavo, and a Kunavo balance cannot pay for it.

What about PayPal?

No, neither with Anthropic nor with Kunavo.

What you can use without a credit card, in the same checkout: iDEAL (Netherlands), Bancontact (Belgium), Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link use a saved card, which may be a debit card.

Debit card, Maestro, or V PAY?

A Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard works as a card, bij Anthropic and bij Kunavo: Anthropic neemt credit- én debitcards aan (help center), and in de checkout van Kunavo telt zo'n kaart als Visa of Mastercard.

Maestro and V PAY: do not count on it.

What you need

Three things, and none of them is a credit card:

  • an email address or a Google account to register;
  • in the Netherlands, a bank that supports iDEAL; in Belgium, a Bancontact card or the Bancontact app linked to a Belgian bank account;
  • $10, the minimum top-up, which you already see converted into euros in checkout.

For a first test, $10 is more than enough: Claude Haiku 4.5 costs $0,70 per million input tokens and $3,50 per million output tokens, so one hundred short requests (each with 1,000 input tokens and 300 output tokens) cost approximately $0,175.

Step by step

1. Create an account

Register with Kunavo using your email address or Google. No card is requested during registration; you enter the dashboard without paying anything.

2. Open Billing and choose an amount

In the dashboard, go to Billing and choose a top-up. The amounts are shown in dollars because the per-token rates are in dollars; you will see the amount in euros in the next step, before confirming anything.

3. Choose iDEAL or Bancontact in Stripe checkout

De knop opent een betaalpagina van Stripe. Betaal je vanuit Nederland of België, dan toont Stripe het bedrag in euro, and met de pagina in euro verschijnt iDEAL (Nederland) of Bancontact (België) naast kaart and Link; in Safari of op een iPhone ook Apple Pay, and in Chrome of op Android Google Pay als je dat hebt ingesteld. iDEAL heet bij Stripe sinds begin 2026 “iDEAL | Wero” and gaat in 2026–2027 over op Wero (Stripe documentation about iDEAL), dus het label in de checkout kan “iDEAL | Wero” zijn.

4. Approve the payment with your bank or in Bancontact

5. The credit is added as soon as the payment is confirmed

6. Create a key and make the first request

Once the credit has been added, create a key at /app/keys. It starts with sk-kn- and is shown only once: copy it immediately. After that, one curl is enough:

terminal
curl https://api.kunavo.com/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KUNAVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "claude-sonnet-5",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Antwoord in één regel: werkt het?"}]
  }'

If you already have code for the OpenAI SDK, the API is compatible with that format: you only change the key and the base_url.

eerste_aanroep.py
# Code die al voor de OpenAI-SDK geschreven is: alleen sleutel en base_url veranderen.
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    api_key="sk-kn-...",                    # maak je aan op kunavo.com/app/keys
    base_url="https://api.kunavo.com/v1", # de enige regel die verandert
)

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-5",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hallo!"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

For Claude Code, a few environment variables are enough; usage is charged per token from the same credit balance:

terminal
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com   # zonder /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL=claude-opus-5-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL=claude-haiku-4-5
claude

The three ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_* lines pin Claude Code's aliases to models provided by Kunavo. Without ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL, the sonnet alias requests Sonnet 5.5, which Kunavo does not offer: then /model sonnet, the execution phase of opusplan and subagents configured to use sonnet return a 404. The opus alias points to Claude Opus 5.5, which requires Claude Code v2.1.280 or later (older version: claude update). More details, such as which model handles background tasks, are available in the Claude Code guide.

What it really costs in euros

The rates are listed in dollars per million tokens:

ModelKunavo (input / output)Anthropic list price (input / output)
Claude Sonnet 5$1,40 / $7,00$2,00 / $10,00
Claude Haiku 4.5$0,70 / $3,50$1,00 / $5,00

All models and rates are listed on the pricing page.

The conversion.

An example calculation. An internal assistant that makes 1.000 requests per month, each with 2.000 input tokens and 500 output tokens, uses 2 million input tokens ($2,80) and half a million output tokens ($3,50) on Claude Sonnet 5: $6,30 per month in total, before conversion fees. Use your own figures to check the calculation in the Claude token cost calculator.

For larger top-ups, you receive additional credit: $100 becomes $110, $1.000 becomes $1.200 and $5.000 becomes $6.250.

Payment methods in Kunavo checkout (the Netherlands and Belgium)

Kunavo is an independent API gateway: one key and one prepaid balance, compatible with the OpenAI SDK and Anthropic's Messages API, including for Claude models, with usage charged per token. Stripe checkout displays the methods available for your country and currency. You can count on the following:

Payment methodWhereHow you pay
iDEALNetherlands, amount in eurosYou approve the payment in your banking app or online banking; the label may be “iDEAL | Wero”
BancontactBelgium, amount in eurosYour Bancontact card or app, linked to a Belgian bank account
Card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay)EverywhereA credit or debit card, including Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard
Apple PaySafari on Mac, iPhone, and iPadA card in the Wallet app
Google PayChrome and Android, with Google Pay set upA card in Google Pay
LinkEverywhere except IndiaA card that Link, Stripe's fast checkout button, stores for you

Not offered: PayPal, SEPA Direct Debit, Klarna (only for buyers in the United States), Tikkie, Riverty (formerly AfterPay), and bank transfer. Prepaid cards are not guaranteed: whether they work depends on the issuer.

For completeness: Stripe offers iDEAL en Bancontact for payments in euros, which is why they also appear in Kunavo's checkout, but no top-up using either one has yet been completed through Kunavo. If you do not see the method for your country in the checkout, card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link work as alternatives.

Limitations

  • Automatic top-ups are available only with a card or Link.
  • No VAT invoice. Kunavo does not issue invoices, including VAT invoices. Your top-up history, with the date, amount, and status, is available in Billing; for questions from your accountant, email contact@kunavo.com.
  • This is a usage-based API, not Claude Pro. The credit pays for API calls and Claude Code with an API key; it does not activate a subscription to claude.ai and does not work in the Claude app.
  • The minimum is stated in dollars. $10, with the euro amount depending on the day's exchange rate.

If iDEAL or Bancontact does not appear

  • VPN or proxy outside the Netherlands or Belgium. Stripe chooses the currency and payment methods when the page loads: turn off the VPN and reopen checkout from Billing.
  • Checkout is in dollars instead of euros. iDEAL and Bancontact work only in euros. Reopen checkout from the connection you are using to pay and check that the amount is shown in euros.
  • Your bank or Bancontact declines the payment. Check in your banking app or the Bancontact app whether the payment was declined (for example, because of a limit), and try again.

If it still does not work, cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link remain available in the same checkout. The complete overview of payment methods by country is in the credit and payment documentation.

The same question in other languages: in English, in French, for France and Belgium, and in German. If you are unsure whether to choose a subscription or the API for Claude Code, read what Claude Code costs (English). To get started: create an account, top up $10 with iDEAL or Bancontact, and make your first request.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay for Claude Pro with iDEAL or PayPal?

Not on claude.ai. For subscriptions purchased on the website, Anthropic accepts only credit and debit cards, and does not accept payment services such as PayPal (Anthropic Help Center, read on October 3, 2026). If you subscribe to Claude Pro in the Claude app, the App Store or Google Play handles the payment. Apple lists PayPal as a payment method for a Dutch Apple Account, and iDEAL | Wero only for adding funds to your Apple Account balance; Google Play says iDEAL cannot be used for subscriptions in the Netherlands. iDEAL through Kunavo pays for the Claude API and Claude Code, not Claude Pro.

Can I pay for Claude with Bancontact?

Not on claude.ai, because only a card works there. It is possible through the iPhone app: a subscription in the app is billed by the App Store, and Apple lists Bancontact as a payment method for a Belgian Apple Account. Google Play does not list Bancontact for Belgium. For the Claude API and Claude Code with an API key, it is possible through Kunavo: Bancontact is offered at checkout to buyers in Belgium once the amount is in euros. That balance does not pay for a Claude Pro subscription.

How can I pay for the Claude API without a credit card?

Through Kunavo, with iDEAL in the Netherlands or Bancontact in Belgium, or with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link. A debit card also works: Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard count as Visa and Mastercard in checkout. You top up a prepaid balance starting at $10; that balance does not expire, there is no monthly fee, and failed requests (4xx/5xx) are not charged.

Does my Maestro or V PAY card work?

Do not count on it. Stripe, which processes payments for Kunavo, does not list Maestro and V PAY among the supported card brands. Dutch banks are replacing those cards with Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard, which do work online as cards. If you still have an old card, pay with iDEAL (Netherlands) or Bancontact (Belgium); a Belgian Bancontact/Maestro card should then be used through Bancontact itself.

Does Kunavo accept PayPal, SEPA Direct Debit, Klarna, or Tikkie?

No. PayPal and SEPA Direct Debit are not offered, Klarna is available only to buyers in the United States (so not even when paying in US dollars), and Tikkie, Riverty (formerly AfterPay), and bank transfer are not available either. Without a credit card, pay with iDEAL, Bancontact, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link, or a debit card.

How much do I pay in euros, and are there fees?

Prices are in US dollars; Stripe Checkout displays the amount in euros before you confirm. Stripe's exchange rate includes 2–4% conversion fees, paid by the buyer: on a top-up of $10, that is between $0,20 and $0,40. If you pay in US dollars, those fees do not apply, but iDEAL and Bancontact do not appear because both work only in euros. Kunavo charges no monthly fee. Automatic top-up is available only with a saved card or Link; every top-up with iDEAL or Bancontact is made manually.

Does it work with Claude Code?

Yes, with the same key. Set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.kunavo.com (without /v1), ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to your sk-kn- key, and ANTHROPIC_MODEL to claude-sonnet-5. Also pin the aliases opus, sonnet, and haiku, as in the example on this page: without ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL, the alias sonnet requests Sonnet 5.5, which Kunavo does not provide, and you get a 404. Usage is charged per token from the same balance topped up with iDEAL or Bancontact, with no subscription. The complete configuration is in the Claude Code guide.

Do I get a VAT invoice?

No. Kunavo does not issue invoices, including VAT invoices. The history of your top-ups, with date, amount, and status, is under Billing in the dashboard; for questions from your accountant, email contact@kunavo.com.
