You can pay for Claude Pro and Max on claude.ai only with a credit or debit card; Anthropic does not accept PayPal. If you subscribe in the Claude app, Apple or Google handles billing: Apple lists PayPal as an Apple Account payment method in Germany, and Google Play lists PayPal for apps and digital content. You can pay for the Claude API and Claude Code with an API key without a credit card through prepaid balance at Kunavo: with a Visa or Mastercard debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link, and in Austria also EPS, from $10. Kunavo does not offer PayPal or SEPA Direct Debit, and Klarna is available only to buyers in the United States. You cannot purchase a Claude subscription through Kunavo, only API access billed per token. Anthropic's information comes from the Help Center (read on October 3, 2026); Kunavo's payment methods and prices were checked on October 3, 2026.
Short answer: How can you pay for Claude?
It depends on which Claude product you are paying for. Subscriptions and the API are separate products with separate billing:
- Claude Pro or Max on the web: card only. „Für Abonnements, die im Web erworben wurden, akzeptieren wir nur Kredit- oder Debitkarten“, schreibt Anthropic in den FAQ about billing for paid plans. Zahlungsdienstleister wie PayPal oder Venmo nimmt Anthropic laut dem Article about declined cards nicht an (beide gelesen am October 3, 2026).
- Claude Pro or Max in the app: Apple or Google handles billing.
- Claude API and Claude Code with an API key: through Kunavo, without a credit card.
Debit card instead of a credit card: what works
- Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard work like a credit card. At Kunavo, they are processed as Visa or Mastercard through the Stripe checkout.
- A standalone girocard (EC card) does not work at Kunavo.
- Apple Pay and Google Pay work with a Visa or Mastercard in the wallet, including a debit card. A standalone girocard stored there does not help in the Kunavo checkout, for the same reason as above.
When the card is declined
In the same article, Anthropic lists common factors that may contribute to a decline:
- the country of the billing address is not supported;
- the billing address differs from the one registered with the bank;
- 3D Secure verification was not completed;
- the payment method is not accepted;
- the account has insufficient funds;
- a temporary technical issue.
According to Anthropic, it does not learn the exact reason from the bank; if in doubt, ask the bank. If that does not help, the path below leads to the Claude API without a credit card.
Payment methods at Kunavo
Kunavo is an API gateway that offers Claude and GPT models through a key and prepaid balance. Top-ups are made through Stripe's checkout, which shows buyers in Germany and Austria the amount in euros. These payment methods are offered at checkout:
| Payment method | Where | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, UnionPay) | everywhere | Credit and debit cards, including Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard; not a standalone girocard |
| Apple Pay | Safari, iPhone, and iPad | with a Visa or Mastercard in the wallet, including a debit card |
| Google Pay | Chrome and Android with Google Pay set up | with a Visa or Mastercard in the wallet, including a debit card |
| Link | everywhere except India | Stripe's payment service, which stores your card; automatic top-ups are also possible with it |
| EPS | Austria, checkout in euros | Redirects to online banking, with immediate confirmation |
Not offered: PayPal, SEPA Direct Debit, advance bank transfer, Klarna (only for buyers in the United States), giropay, Sofort, paysafecard, and TWINT. The list for all countries is in the Billing documentation.
Step by step: Pay for the Claude API without a credit card
1. Create an account
Sign up with an email address or Google account. No card is required during registration.
2. Choose an amount
Open Billing and choose a top-up tier; the smallest is $10. The amount is in US dollars because token rates are set in dollars. Larger top-ups provide bonus balance: $100 ergeben $110, $1.000 ergeben $1.200, $5.000 ergeben $6.250.
3. Choose the payment method in the Stripe checkout
The checkout shows the amount in euros before you confirm anything. Choose a debit or credit card, Link, Apple Pay in Safari or on iPhone, or Google Pay in Chrome or on Android. In Austria, EPS is also available.
4. Check the balance
As soon as Stripe confirms the payment, the balance is credited, usually within seconds. If you do not see it immediately, reload Billing instead of paying again: a second payment is booked as additional balance, not as a correction.
5. Create an API key
Under API Keys, create a key. It begins with sk-kn- and is shown only once; copy it before closing the window.
6. First call
A test with curl:
# Sobald das Guthaben da ist, ist das der erste Aufruf (OpenAI-kompatibel).
curl https://api.kunavo.com/v1/chat/completions \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $KUNAVO_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "claude-sonnet-5",
"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "In einem Satz: Hat die Zahlung geklappt?"}]
}'For Claude Code, set six environment variables:
# Claude Code mit dem Kunavo-Key (Anthropic-Messages-Format)
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com # nur der Origin, ohne /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL=claude-opus-5-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL=claude-haiku-4-5
claudeAs long as these variables are set, Claude Code uses the key instead of a subscription: plan limits do not apply, and each call is deducted from the balance. The three ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_…_MODEL lines bind Claude Code's aliases to models offered by Kunavo. Without them, the sonnet alias requests Sonnet 5.5, which Kunavo does not offer, and /model sonnet, the execution phase of opusplan, along with subagents using model: sonnet, fail with 404. The opus alias points to Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5); this requires Claude Code version 2.1.280 or later (claude update). Further settings are in the Claude Code guide.
What it costs
Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1,40 per 1M input tokens and $7,00 per 1M output tokens at Kunavo (at Anthropic $2,00 and $10,00); Claude Haiku 4.5 costs $0,70 and $3,50.
A calculation example for orientation: A request with 2.000 input and 500 output tokens costs around $0,0063 on Claude Sonnet 5. The minimum top-up of $10 therefore covers approximately 1.580 such requests. This assumes no prompt caching and no bonus balance. All models and rates are listed in the Claude API pricing guide; the Claude Code pricing guide calculates whether a subscription or key is more worthwhile for Claude Code.
Euros or dollars?
Limits you should know
- No Claude subscription. Through Kunavo, you purchase API access billed per token, not Claude Pro or Max and not balance in Anthropic's Console.
- Automatic top-up only with a saved card or Link. With Apple Pay, Google Pay, and EPS, you top up manually each time.
- No invoice showing VAT.
- Prepaid, with no expiration.

Frequently asked questions
Can you pay for Claude with PayPal?
Not on claude.ai or in Anthropic's Console: Anthropic states in its Help Center that it does not accept third-party payment providers such as PayPal or Venmo (read on October 3, 2026). Anyone subscribing to Claude Pro or Max in the iPhone app pays through the App Store, and Apple lists PayPal as an Apple Account payment method in Germany; Google Play lists PayPal for apps and digital content. Kunavo, where you pay for the Claude API through prepaid balance, also does not accept PayPal. There, you pay with a debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link.
Can I subscribe to Claude Pro without a credit card?
On the web, only with a card, although a debit card is sufficient: for subscriptions purchased on the web, Anthropic accepts credit or debit cards. In the Claude app for iOS or Android, the App Store or Google Play determines the payment methods, and the German App Store lists Claude Pro and Max as in-app purchases. Kunavo sells neither Claude Pro nor Max, but API access billed per token.
Does my EC card or debit card work?
A Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard works at Anthropic and Kunavo like a credit card. A card that is only a girocard (formerly an EC card) does not work in the Kunavo checkout, because Stripe does not list girocard among its supported card brands. If the card also bears the Visa or Mastercard logo, you pay through that network.
Are SEPA Direct Debit, bank transfer, or Klarna available?
Kunavo does not offer SEPA Direct Debit or advance bank transfer to a Kunavo account, and Klarna is available only to buyers in the United States. Payment is made with a debit or credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link; buyers in Austria also see EPS, which redirects to their own online banking. Google Play lists Klarna for apps and digital content; that concerns the app subscription at most, not the API.
How do I pay for the Claude API or Claude Code without a credit card?
Through a Kunavo account: top up prepaid balance from $10 with a debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link, create a key under API Keys, set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to the key in Claude Code, and set a model with ANTHROPIC_MODEL, for example claude-sonnet-5. ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL, ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL, and ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL also map the opus, sonnet, and haiku aliases to models offered by Kunavo. Claude Code then uses the key instead of a subscription, plan limits do not apply, and each call is deducted from the balance.
Do I pay in euros or dollars?
Prices are set in US dollars, and Stripe shows buyers in Germany and Austria the amount in euros at checkout. According to Stripe, the exchange rate includes a 2–4% conversion fee paid by the buyer. If you select US dollars at checkout, you do not pay this fee; your bank then converts the amount at its own rate and may charge its own fees.
Do I receive an invoice with VAT?
No. Kunavo does not issue an invoice showing VAT, and the checkout does not request a VAT ID. Top-ups appear with their date, amount, and status in the Billing section; if you need a receipt for accounting, write to contact@kunavo.com.
What is the minimum top-up, and does the balance expire?
At least $10, one-time and with no subscription. The balance does not expire, there is no monthly fee, and failed requests (4xx/5xx) are not charged. Larger top-ups provide bonus balance: $100 becomes $110, $1.000 ergeben $1.200, $5.000 ergeben $6.250. Automatic top-up is available only with a saved card or Link; Apple Pay, Google Pay, and EPS require manual top-ups. Balance in Anthropic's Console, by contrast, expires one year after purchase and is non-refundable.
