Pay for Claude without a bank card: PayPal, Bancontact, Apple Pay, what works (France and Belgium)

On claude.ai, Anthropic accepts only a credit or debit card for a subscription purchased on the web and refuses PayPal (centre d'aide Anthropic : Billing FAQ et Declined cards, lus le October 3, 2026). Pour payer Claude Pro ou Max sans carte, il faut s'abonner depuis l'app Claude sur iPhone ou Android : c'est alors l'App Store ou Google Play qui encaisse, avec PayPal, la facturation par l'opérateur mobile ou une carte cadeau (pages d'aide d'Apple et de Google). Pour l'API Claude et Claude Code avec une clé d'API, Kunavo propose Bancontact (Belgique), Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link et la carte, en prépayé dès $10. Ce sont deux achats distincts : le solde Kunavo ne paie pas un abonnement Claude Pro, et l'App Store ne paie pas l'API. En France, Apple Pay, Google Pay et Link s'appuient sur une carte enregistrée : pas besoin d'une carte de crédit, une carte de débit CB co-badgée Visa ou Mastercard suffit. Ni le site d'Anthropic ni Kunavo ne proposent le prélèvement SEPA.

What Anthropic accepts and rejects

Three articles from Anthropic's Help Center, checked on October 3, 2026, settle the question:

• Subscription purchased on the web: card only. Selon la FAQ about billing for paid plans, seules les cartes de crédit ou de débit sont acceptées pour les abonnements pris sur le site ; un abonnement pris dans l'app iOS ou Android suit les moyens de paiement de l'App Store ou de Google Play.
• Neither PayPal nor Venmo. L'article “Why was my card declined?” indique qu'Anthropic accepte les cartes pour tous ses achats et refuse les processeurs de paiement tiers comme PayPal ou Venmo. Il mentionne aussi les virements ACH, réservés aux plans Enterprise en libre-service et aux comptes API facturés au mois.
• Prepaid API credits, valid for one year. Sur la Console Anthropic, les crédits API se paient d'avance, expirent un an après l'achat et ne sont pas remboursables (Article about API payments).

If your card is declined, the same Anthropic article lists the checks in this order: a supported billing location, a billing address matching the one held by the bank, 3D Secure verification, an accepted payment method, sufficient funds, another attempt, and then a call to your bank.

Claude Pro or Max subscription without a card: the App Store or Google Play route

For Claude Pro or Max, this is the only way to pay without a card: subscribe through the Claude app on iPhone, iPad, or Android. The store then charges you using its own payment methods, which vary by country:

Claude API and Claude Code: pay through Kunavo without a credit card

Kunavo is an independent API gateway: a prepaid balance and a single key, compatible with the OpenAI SDK and Anthropic's Messages API, provide access to Claude models billed by token. Claude Code works with the same key. The balance is topped up through a Stripe checkout, which displays available methods based on your country and currency. For a buyer in France or Belgium, these are the methods to count on:

Pay by Bank (paiement depuis votre banque en ligne) n'est pas proposé aux acheteurs en France ni en Belgique. D'après la Stripe documentation on Pay by Bank (lue le October 3, 2026), il n'est ouvert qu'aux clients situés au Royaume-Uni, en Irlande et en Finlande ; pour la France, il reste en préversion privée, sur demande séparée, et la Belgique n'est pas citée.

CB cards. Selon Stripe documentation on Cartes Bancaires (lue le October 3, 2026), plus de 95 % des cartes CB sont co-badgées Visa ou Mastercard et peuvent passer par l'un ou l'autre réseau. Une carte CB co-badgée passe donc au checkout Kunavo comme une Visa ou une Mastercard, et une carte de débit suffit.

What “without a card” means here. En France, tous les moyens du tableau reposent sur une carte : Apple Pay, Google Pay et Link (Stripe's wallet) la mémorisent pour vous. L'intérêt est ailleurs : pas besoin de carte de crédit, une carte de débit suffit, et vous n'avez pas à retaper le numéro à chaque recharge. En Belgique, Bancontact passe par l'app ou la carte Bancontact de votre banque.

Not offered by Kunavo: PayPal, SEPA Direct Debit, Klarna (available only to buyers located in the United States), paysafecard, and carrier billing. Prepaid cards are not guaranteed: acceptance depends on the issuer, and we have not tested them.

Steps from registration to the first call

1. Create an account

Create a Kunavo account with your email address or Google account. No card is required during registration.

2. Choose the amount

In Billing, choose a top-up tier: $10 minimum, in dollars, because token rates are in dollars. Higher tiers add a bonus ($100 payés, $110 crédités ; $1 000 payés, $1 200 crédités ; $5 000 payés, $6 250 crédités).

3. Choose the payment method on the Stripe page

The button opens a payment page hosted by Stripe. From France or Belgium, the amount is displayed in euros, already converted, before you confirm. Choose Apple Pay (Safari, iPhone, iPad), Google Pay (Chrome, Android), Link, or a card, or Bancontact if you are paying from Belgium.

4. Authorize the payment with Bancontact

Stripe vous redirige vers le site ou l'app Bancontact pour autoriser le paiement, et la confirmation est immédiate (Stripe documentation on Bancontact). Le solde est crédité dès que Stripe confirme le paiement. S'il n'apparaît pas tout de suite, rafraîchissez Billing avant de payer à nouveau : chaque paiement est crédité une seule fois, et un second paiement s'ajoute au solde au lieu de corriger le premier.

5. Create the key and make the first call

Generate a key at /app/keys. It begins with sk-kn- and is displayed only once: copy it before closing. Then:

For Claude Code, export these environment variables; usage is billed by token from the same balance, with no plan allowance cap:

In this block, the opus alias points to Claude Opus 5.5, which requires Claude Code v2.1.280 or later (on an older version, first run claude update), and the sonnet alias points to Claude Sonnet 5. Without the ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL line, /model sonnet, the execution phase of opusplan, and subagents declared in model: sonnet would require Sonnet 5.5, which Kunavo does not offer, and would receive a 404 error.

What it really costs

Prices are set in dollars per million tokens (Kunavo catalog):

The conversion. Stripe affiche le montant en euros avec un taux garanti 24 heures, qui inclut des frais de conversion de 2 à 4 % payés par l'acheteur (Stripe documentation on Adaptive Pricing, lue le October 3, 2026). Payer en dollars évite ces frais, mais votre banque peut alors appliquer son propre taux et ses frais ; et Bancontact n'apparaît que si le montant est affiché en euros.

An illustrative example. Assumptions: 1 000 requests with 2 000 input tokens and 500 output tokens, without prompt caching and without failed requests. Cost: $3,15 on Claude Haiku 4.5 and $6,30 on Claude Sonnet 5, before conversion to euros. A $10 top-up therefore covers at least 3 100 requests of this type on Claude Haiku 4.5.

Limits to know

• This is not a Claude Pro or Max subscription. The Kunavo balance pays for the Claude API by token and Claude Code with an API key; it does not provide access to claude.ai and does not pay for the Anthropic Console.
• Bancontact must be paid for with each top-up. Automatic top-ups work only with a saved card or Link, and Stripe does not offer Bancontact for recurring payments.
• No invoice with French or Belgian VAT. Checkout does not display VAT or request a VAT number. The top-up history (date, amount, status) is in Billing; for accounting questions, write to contact@kunavo.com.
• Prices in dollars, prepaid balance. $10 minimum, with no subscription or monthly fees; the balance does not expire, and failed requests (4xx/5xx) are not charged. In the Anthropic Console, by contrast, credits expire after one year.

If Bancontact, Apple Pay, or Google Pay does not appear

• Bancontact is offered only to buyers located in Belgium, with an amount displayed in euros. Disable a VPN that locates you elsewhere, do not switch checkout to dollars, then reopen it from Billing.
• Apple Pay appears in Safari on Mac, iPhone, or iPad, with a card in the Wallet app.
• Google Pay appears in Chrome or on Android if Google Pay is configured with a card.
• In all cases, the card and Link remain available.
