A practical guide for French developers moving Claude into production. Pricing compared with Anthropic directly, payment methods available from France, latency from Paris, GDPR, and compliance—the essentials to check before your first call.
First call in 5 seconds
Kunavo supports the OpenAI wire protocol. If your code already uses the OpenAI SDK, migration requires a one-line change in base_url. In Python:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
api_key="sk-kn-...",
base_url="https://api.kunavo.com/v1", # une seule ligne change
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="claude-sonnet-4-6",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Présente-toi en français en deux phrases."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)It’s identical in Node.js / TypeScript:
import OpenAI from "openai";
const client = new OpenAI({
apiKey: process.env.KUNAVO_API_KEY!,
baseURL: "https://api.kunavo.com/v1",
});
const resp = await client.chat.completions.create({
model: "claude-opus-4-7",
messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Résume cet article en 3 puces." }],
});
console.log(resp.choices[0].message.content);Registration is free: top up from $10, pay as you go, and your balance never expires—more than enough to test Claude Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 4.5.
Price difference compared with Anthropic directly
Depending on the model, Claude models on Kunavo are 30% cheaper than Anthropic’s official rates. Claude Sonnet 4.6 costs $3.00 input / $15.00 output per million tokens directly—on Kunavo: $2.10 / $10.50, or 30% less. With prompt caching, rereading the stable prefix is charged at 10% of the input rate, or effectively $0.21 per million tokens. Full rates for each model are at /pricing.
Latency from Paris / Lyon
Kunavo runs in a single US-East region (Ashburn, Virginia), behind an anycast edge that terminates TLS near you. The edge shortens the TLS handshake, not the trip across the Atlantic: from a cloud server in Paris (Scaleway, OVH, AWS Paris), round-trip time is dominated by the physical distance to the US East Coast, plus the model’s own inference time. Calling Anthropic directly takes exactly the same route. Streaming responses arrive with the same time-to-first-token as upstream—no buffering, no batching.
Payment methods—cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay
We use Stripe natively. Methods available in France:
- Cards: CB, Visa, Mastercard, American Express
- Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link (one-click payment)
Top-ups are displayed in USD, but Stripe converts them to your currency on the payment page—this is exactly how Pix works in Brazil. SEPA Direct Debit is nevertheless not included: it is not enabled on our account, so it never appears at checkout. A card issued in France works normally, including a debit card linked to your SEPA account; if you pay in dollars, your bank performs the conversion.
Minimum top-up: $10 USD (~€9). No subscription; it’s a prepaid wallet, and the balance never expires.
VAT and invoicing
The standard checkout does not show VAT or ask for an intra-community VAT number; an invoice showing VAT is not generated automatically. Your top-ups, with date, amount, and status, appear in your billing dashboard; for an accounting receipt, email contact@kunavo.com.
GDPR and data residency
Routing logic runs at the gateway in the single US-East region (Ashburn), not at the anycast edge, which only terminates TLS. Billing and account data are stored in a single primary database, with encrypted daily snapshots of the volume. We forward requests to upstream APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google)—these providers process prompt content according to their own terms. Kunavo offers neither Zero Data Retention nor a data processing agreement (DPA / Article 28 GDPR), nor data hosting in the EU. If your processing requires one, contract directly with the model provider under Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google enterprise terms.
AI sovereignty and an alternative to Big Tech
Many French developers are looking for an alternative to purely US-based players. Kunavo is not a sovereign alternative—we aggregate OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. No provider in our catalog is European, and every request passes through our gateway in US-East: we cannot restrict routing to European providers. For strict sovereignty requirements (healthcare, defense, public sector), contact a European provider directly.
Frequently asked questions from French developers
- Invoice with VAT? Not automatically: checkout does not show VAT or ask for a VAT number. For a receipt: contact@kunavo.com.
- DPA (Article 28)? No, Kunavo does not offer one. If you need one, contract directly with the model provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google).
- SEPA Direct Debit? No—SEPA Direct Debit is not enabled on our Stripe account. A debit card linked to your SEPA account works normally. Automatic top-ups are optionally available from a saved card or Link.
- Is Mistral available? No—see /models for the current catalog and subscribe to the changelog for new models.
