Pay for Claude with Klarna: what works (and what it costs)

Claude Pro and Max can't be paid with Klarna: Anthropic takes cards, and the App Store and Google Play don't list Klarna in the US. The Claude API and Claude Code on an API key can be, through a Kunavo top-up in US dollars. This page covers which Klarna options each amount can get, what they cost, the credit check, eligibility and refunds.

Klarna can't pay for Claude Pro or Max. Anthropic bills the web plans to a credit or debit card only, and the app plans go through the App Store or Google Play, whose US payment lists have no Klarna. Klarna can pay for Claude by the token, though: the Claude API, and Claude Code running on an API key. Kunavo resells those models from a prepaid balance, and when its Stripe checkout shows the price in US dollars, Klarna is one of the choices, from $10. Which Klarna plans you can get depends on the amount: Pay in full, Pay later in 30 days, Pay in 4 and, on top-ups of $45 or more, financing. This page sets each plan against Kunavo's top-up amounts and covers what it costs, the credit check, who qualifies, and how a Klarna refund unwinds. Prices and payment terms were checked on October 3, 2026.

Short answer: can you pay for Claude with Klarna?

Several different checkouts sit behind the word “Claude”, and Klarna gets a different answer at each:

  • On claude.ai: no Klarna button. Anthropic's paid-plan billing FAQ says Pro and Max ordered through the website can be paid only by credit or debit card (read October 3, 2026).
  • In the iPhone or Android app: no pay-later method at all. The same FAQ says Apple or Google charges for plans bought in the app, so the store's wallet decides. Apple's US page lists cards, PayPal and Apple's own balances and wallets (Account balance, Apple Card, Apple Cash, Apple Pay). Google Play's US page lists cards, PayPal, Cash App Pay, Venmo, Google Pay balance and gift cards. Klarna is on neither list, and neither has any installment option (both read October 3, 2026).
  • Klarna's One-time card: untested on Claude. For stores that do not offer Klarna, Klarna sells a One-time card. Klarna says it works at US online stores that accept Visa, expires after 24 hours if unused, and adds a service fee of $0.75–$3 for bi-weekly payments at stores that are not Klarna partners (Klarna help center, read October 3, 2026). We have not tried one on claude.ai or Anthropic's Console, so this page makes no claim either way.
  • Per-token Claude (the API, and Claude Code on a key): yes, at Kunavo. Anthropic's own Console tops up API credits with a card (read October 3, 2026). Kunavo's checkout lists Klarna whenever the amount is shown in US dollars, and the balance it buys is spent on Claude requests, including the ones Claude Code sends. The rest of this page is about that route.
  • ChatGPT: Kunavo does not sell ChatGPT Plus. Many “ChatGPT Klarna” results are about Klarna's shopping plugin, one of the first ChatGPT plugins (TechCrunch, March 23, 2023). It was a way to shop inside ChatGPT, not a way to pay for ChatGPT.

Subscription or API balance: where Klarna fits

A Klarna plan splits one purchase. Claude Pro and Max are renewing subscriptions to Claude's own apps, charged again every period. An API balance is bought once and drawn down per token by scripts, apps that ask for an API key, and Claude Code in API mode. The two are separate accounts: money in one never shows up in the other.

Sources, read October 3, 2026: Anthropic's billing FAQ and API billing article, plus the Apple and Google Play pages linked above. Klarna is one of many methods Kunavo takes; the country-by-country list is in the guide to paying for the Claude API without a credit card.

Which Klarna options a top-up can get

Klarna, not Kunavo, decides which options you see. Choosing Klarna sends you to Klarna's site, which picks options based on your currency, the amount and the kind of purchase, and Stripe says the cart ranges are set by Klarna and can change at Klarna's discretion (Stripe's Klarna docs, read October 3, 2026). Here are Stripe's US ranges set against Kunavo's top-up amounts:

Top-upBalance creditedPay in full ($0–$4,000)Pay later in 30 days ($5–$1,000)Pay in 4 ($1–$2,000)Financing ($45–$10,000)
$10$10Can be offeredCan be offered4 × $2.50Below its $45 minimum
$100$110Can be offeredCan be offered4 × $25Can be offered (credit approval)
$1,000$1,200Can be offeredCan be offered4 × $250Can be offered (credit approval)
$5,000$6,250Above its $4,000 maximumAbove its $1,000 maximumAbove its $2,000 maximumCan be offered (credit approval)

At the $10 minimum, the ranges allow Pay in full, Pay later in 30 days and Pay in 4, but not Financing, which starts at $45. The $5,000 top-up fits only Financing; Pay in full stops at $4,000, so to pay that amount at once, use a card or ACH bank debit. Stripe notes that Pay in 4 is typically split into equal payments, but Klarna may occasionally charge more in the first one. “Can be offered” means the amount is inside the range, not that Klarna will approve it.

A top-up is a one-time payment. Kunavo's checkout does not ask Klarna to keep your account on file for later charges, which Stripe says would narrow the plans Klarna shows (Stripe's Klarna docs).

What paying with Klarna costs

  • No Kunavo surcharge. Klarna's rules for Stripe merchants forbid charging fees or higher prices for Klarna purchases (Stripe's Klarna rules, read October 3, 2026). The amount Klarna shows is the dollar amount you picked, with no currency conversion, because the checkout is in US dollars.
  • Pay in full is not a loan: Klarna charges your card the same day (Klarna Pay in Full Agreement v1.2.0, published July 22, 2025).
  • Pay in 4 charges the first payment when the merchant confirms the order, then three more automatically every 2 weeks (the first of them at least 18 days after the first payment). Klarna charges no interest and no fees unless you miss a payment. A payment still unpaid 10 days after it is due can add a late fee of up to $7, and the late fees on one order never exceed 25% of the purchase (Klarna Pay in 4 Agreement v9.3.0, published June 3, 2026). On the $10 minimum that is 4 payments of $2.50, and late fees on it cannot add more than $2.50 in total.
  • Pay later in 30 days charges your card 30 days after the merchant confirms the order, with no interest. The late fee is the same: up to $7, never more than 25% of the amount due (Klarna Pay Later Terms v5.2.0, published June 3, 2026).
  • Financing runs 0.00%–35.99% APR depending on creditworthiness and term, is subject to credit approval, and is issued by WebBank; a minimum purchase and a down payment may be required (Klarna's US financing disclosure, effective April 22, 2025, read October 3, 2026). Klarna sets the term and rate. Kunavo does not see them.
  • No One-time card fee here. The $0.75–$3 service fee applies to Klarna's One-time card at stores that are not Klarna partners. Kunavo's checkout offers Klarna directly, and Klarna's Pay in 4 terms charge no fees unless a payment is missed.

Why financing an API balance is unusual

Pay-later plans are built for things you receive up front. An API balance works differently: it is spent a fraction of a cent at a time as you make calls, and at Kunavo it never expires. Splitting the $10 minimum with Pay in 4 means Klarna lends you $7.50 over a 6-week term (at least 46 days, per the Pay in 4 terms), to fund calls you may not have made yet. To put an installment in API terms: at Kunavo's Claude Sonnet 5 rates ($1.40 per 1M input tokens, $7.00 per 1M output), a call sending 2,000 tokens and receiving 500 costs roughly $0.0063. One $2.50 installment covers roughly 396 such calls, and the whole $10 about 1,587 (illustrative arithmetic; long prompts and agent loops cost more). If you only want to try Claude, Pay in full avoids borrowing altogether, and Pay in 4 on the smallest top-up keeps the loan small. Don't put a large top-up on interest-bearing financing if it will take you months to spend: you would be paying interest on money still sitting unused in the balance.

Credit check and who can use Klarna

  • Soft check. Klarna's US Pay in 4 and Pay Later terms say it only obtains consumer reports that do not affect your credit score or leave a hard inquiry. The same terms say Klarna may report your account to credit bureaus, and late or missed payments may appear on your credit report. Financing is subject to credit approval.
  • Eligibility. Klarna's Pay in 4 page asks that you be a US resident, at least 18 or the legal age in your state, with a valid card or bank account, and able to receive verification codes by text message (read October 3, 2026). The Pay in 4 terms add that you pay with your own debit or credit card or another payment method Klarna accepts, and that prepaid cards are not accepted.
  • State exclusions. Pay later is not available in Montana, New Mexico or Hawaii; Pay in 4 is not available in New Mexico or Hawaii; financing is not available in Iowa, West Virginia or Massachusetts. Puerto Rico is the only US territory Klarna supports (Stripe's Klarna docs, read October 3, 2026).
  • Personal purchases only. Klarna does not support business-to-business payments (Stripe's Klarna rules). If a company is paying for its team's API usage, use a card, Link or ACH bank debit instead.

How to pay with Klarna at Kunavo, step by step

  1. Sign up at Kunavo (email or Google). Sign-up takes no payment method, so nothing reaches Klarna until you pick it at checkout.
  2. In Billing, choose the amount that matches the Klarna plan you want, using the table above: the $10 minimum, or a bonus tier ($100 credits $110, $1,000 credits $1,200, $5,000 credits $6,250).
  3. Stripe's checkout opens. Klarna is listed only when the price reads in US dollars. If you see euros, pounds or another currency, skip to the troubleshooting section below.
  4. Klarna's site opens. Pick one of the options it offers you, confirm with the code Klarna texts you, and approve. Klarna then sends you back to Kunavo.
  5. Back at Kunavo, the balance goes up once Stripe marks the payment complete. If Billing still shows the old figure, reload the page instead of starting another checkout. A second checkout is a second order, which means a second Klarna plan with its own payment schedule.
  6. Under API keys, generate a key (sk-kn-…, displayed only once) and give it to Claude Code:
terminal
# Claude Code on a Kunavo key, billed from the balance you topped up
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com # the origin, no /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
claude

The same key works with the OpenAI and Anthropic SDKs and with apps that take an API key. Setup details are in the Claude Code integration docs and the quickstart.

Auto-recharge cannot use Klarna. It charges only a saved card or Link, so every Klarna top-up is one you make by hand.

If Klarna does not appear or is declined

  • The checkout is not in US dollars. Stripe shows Klarna only when it places you in a supported country, from your shipping address or, failing that, your IP address (Stripe's Klarna docs). At Kunavo, Klarna is offered only in US-dollar checkouts; a checkout in euros or pounds does not show it, even in countries where Klarna operates. A VPN can move the checkout to another currency, so turn it off and reopen the checkout from Billing.
  • Your state excludes the option (list above), or the amount is outside the option's range (table above).
  • Klarna declined the order. That is Klarna's decision. Kunavo does not see the reason and cannot override it; Klarna's app or support can tell you why.

The same US-dollar checkout also offers cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link, Cash App Pay, ACH bank debit (credited after 3–5 business days), Afterpay, crypto (stablecoins), and Affirm and Zip on top-ups of $100 and up. PayPal is not offered. Every method, country by country, is in the payment methods hub; for stablecoins, see paying for an AI API with crypto.

Refunds and disputes with Klarna

  • Kunavo's terms. The part of a top-up your API calls have already used is not refundable. If you close the account, the unused part goes back to the original payment method, less any payment processor fees (Terms, section 2). For a Klarna purchase that means back through Klarna, which Stripe allows only within 180 days of the payment (next point); past that window, write to contact@kunavo.com.
  • How Klarna handles a refund. Stripe allows a Klarna refund up to 180 days after the payment. Klarna cancels the remaining payments and returns what you have already paid, usually within 5–7 business days (it can take longer depending on your bank). A partial refund smaller than what you still owe is deducted from that balance and spread evenly across the remaining payments; one larger than what you still owe clears it and the difference comes back to you (Stripe's Klarna docs, read October 3, 2026).
  • Disputes. You file a dispute in the Klarna app, within 180 days, and Klarna pauses your repayments while it is open. It starts as an inquiry, during which the merchant can still refund you; if it is not resolved within 21 days it escalates to a chargeback, and from then on the payment can no longer be refunded (Stripe's Klarna dispute docs, read October 3, 2026). Writing to contact@kunavo.com first is the faster route.

Limits to know before you pay

  • Klarna appears only in US-dollar checkouts, so Stripe's 2–4% currency-conversion fee does not apply to it.
  • Nothing below $10 can be bought. Above that, the balance stays until you spend it, nothing is charged monthly, and requests that come back with a 4xx or 5xx error are free.
  • Auto-recharge needs a saved card or Link, not Klarna.
  • Kunavo does not issue VAT invoices or any other tax invoice. Your record is the Billing page: each top-up with its date, amount and status, next to the payment history in the Klarna app.
  • What Klarna buys here is Kunavo API usage. Claude Pro and Max, ChatGPT Plus, and credits in Anthropic's or OpenAI's own consoles are outside it.
  • Klarna is offered at Kunavo's checkout, but no top-up has been completed with it yet. If Klarna's flow differs from what this page describes, tell us at contact@kunavo.com.

FAQ

Can I pay for Claude Pro or Max with Klarna?

No. Anthropic's billing FAQ says it accepts only credit or debit cards for plans bought on the web, and that plans bought in the Claude iOS or Android app are paid with whatever the App Store or Google Play offers. Neither store's US list of payment methods includes Klarna (all read October 3, 2026). Klarna at Kunavo tops up a balance for the Claude API and Claude Code on an API key, not a Claude subscription.

Can a $10 top-up use Klarna's pay-later options, or only pay now?

Stripe's US ranges allow Pay in full, Pay later in 30 days and Pay in 4 at $10 (Pay later starts at $5); Financing starts at $45. Pay in 4 on $10 is 4 payments of $2.50. Klarna, not Kunavo, decides which of these it shows you for a given order, so you may see fewer.

Does Klarna run a credit check?

For Pay in 4 and Pay Later, Klarna's US terms say it only obtains consumer reports that do not affect your credit score or leave a hard inquiry. The same terms say Klarna may report your account to credit bureaus, and late or missed payments may appear on your credit report. Financing is subject to credit approval.

What does paying with Klarna cost?

Kunavo charges the same price whatever the method; Klarna's rules for Stripe merchants forbid a surcharge. Pay in full is not a loan. Pay in 4 and Pay Later carry no interest; a payment still unpaid 10 days after it is due can add a late fee of up to $7, and late fees are capped at 25% of the order ($2.50 in total on a $10 top-up). Klarna's US financing runs 0.00%–35.99% APR, issued by WebBank.

Why don't I see Klarna at checkout?

At Kunavo, Klarna is offered only when the checkout is in US dollars, to buyers Stripe places in the US from a shipping address or, failing that, the IP address; a euro or pound checkout does not show it. Some options are excluded in certain states (Pay later in Montana, New Mexico and Hawaii; Pay in 4 in New Mexico and Hawaii), each option has an amount range, and Klarna can decline an order. Cards, Cash App Pay, ACH bank debit and Afterpay are on the same US-dollar checkout.

Can my company pay with Klarna?

No. Stripe's Klarna rules say Klarna does not support business-to-business payments. For a company purchase, use a card, Link or ACH bank debit, which credits after 3–5 business days.

How do refunds work if I paid with Klarna?

A refund goes back through Klarna, which cancels your remaining payments and returns what you have already paid, usually within 5–7 business days; Stripe allows it up to 180 days after the payment. Under Kunavo's terms, balance consumed by API usage is not refundable, and unused balance is refunded to the original payment method when you close the account, less payment processor fees; through Klarna, that is possible only inside the same 180-day window.

Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus with Klarna through Kunavo?

No. A Kunavo balance pays for API calls only, Claude and GPT models alike. It does not pay for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or OpenAI's own API credits, so whether OpenAI accepts Klarna is a question for OpenAI's billing pages.
