Zip can't pay for Claude Pro or Max. It can pay for the Claude API and Claude Code, split into four payments, through a Kunavo top-up of $100 or more. Kunavo is an independent API gateway whose Stripe checkout shows Zip to US buyers paying in US dollars. You pay Zip 25% today, Zip pays Kunavo the full amount at once, and the whole balance is yours straight away while you repay Zip over six weeks, plus Zip's fee. What you buy is a prepaid API balance, not a Claude subscription. Prices verified October 3, 2026.
Short answer: can you pay for Claude with Zip?
"Claude" is four different bills, and Zip reaches only one of them. What each biller says, read October 3, 2026:
| What you're paying for | Zip? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro or Max, bought on claude.ai | No | Web subscriptions take credit or debit cards only (Anthropic billing FAQ). The payment-methods article rules out third-party processors such as PayPal and Venmo and says nothing about pay-later services. |
| Claude Pro or Max, bought in the iPhone or Android app | No | Apple or Google bills it. Apple's US list (Apple Account balance, Apple Card, Apple Cash, Apple Pay, cards, PayPal) and Google Play's, which adds Cash App Pay and Venmo, name no Zip and no other buy-now-pay-later service. |
| Credits on Anthropic's API Console | No | Prepaid by card; the credits expire a year after purchase and are non-refundable (Anthropic API billing). Anthropic's payment article keeps ACH for self-serve Enterprise plans and invoiced API accounts. |
| The Claude API and Claude Code on an API key, via Kunavo | Yes, from $100 | Zip is offered at the Stripe checkout on US-dollar top-ups of $100 and up, and is missing from the $10 one. |
What about the Zip Virtual Card, the card number Zip's app generates for shops that don't take Zip directly? Anthropic neither names nor bans it, and we haven't tried one on claude.ai. Zip's help center says each virtual card is spent on a single order, while a Claude plan bills you again every month, so even if the first charge went through, the renewal would most likely have no card to bill.
How Zip Pay in 4 works
Through Stripe, Zip in the United States means Pay in 4. Stripe's Zip docs list no Zip Pay or Zip Money for the US; those are Zip's Australian products. Everything below is Zip's and Stripe's, read October 3, 2026.
- Who can use it. You must live in the US, be at least 18 and have a mobile number Zip can verify. Payments come from a US credit or debit card (American Express and Discover included); overseas cards and prepaid debit cards are refused (Zip's FAQ). Zip says it can be used only for US purchases and that its financing is issued by WebBank (Zip, how it works).
- Approval. At checkout you are sent to Zip's site, log in to your Zip account, Zip checks whether you are eligible for that purchase, and you accept the terms of a payment plan (Stripe). Zip reviews each transaction separately and never runs a hard credit check. It also looks at the total value of your Zip orders and can deny a purchase that takes them over its limits, and if your card cannot cover the first 25% the order does not go through (Zip's FAQ).
- Schedule. Four payments: 25% when you buy, then the other three two, four and six weeks later (Stripe, Zip, Zip's FAQ).
- Cost. Zip charges an origination fee, prepaid as a finance charge with the first payment. Its help center gives a range of $4.00 to $62.00 for Pay in 4, depending on the purchase price, and a worked example: a $400 purchase becomes four payments of $102, $408 in total, with an $8 origination fee and a 34.75% APR. The actual fee is shown at checkout (Zip, Pay in 2, 4 and 8). Zip's US site gives a wider $0.50–$124.00 range and says late fees may apply (Zip). Stripe's docs say Zip adds a customer fee based on the purchase amount.
- Limits. $35–$1,500 per purchase through Stripe in the US. Zip's Pay in 8 starts at $200 and, Zip says, is offered in its app and at select merchants (Zip); Stripe's docs list only Pay in 4 for US buyers.
What a Zip top-up looks like at Kunavo
Kunavo sells pay-per-token access to Claude and GPT from a prepaid balance, and the top-up amounts are fixed. Here is each one against Zip's $35–$1,500 limit. Only two amounts were checked at the live checkout: Zip is offered at $100 and absent at $10.
| Top-up | Balance credited | Zip | What you repay Zip |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $10 | Not shown at checkout; below Zip's $35 minimum | — |
| $100 | $110 | Offered at checkout | 4 × $25, plus Zip's fee |
| $1,000 | $1,200 | Within Zip's $35–$1,500 limit; not confirmed at this amount | 4 × $250, plus Zip's fee |
| $5,000 | $6,250 | Above Zip's $1,500 maximum (Stripe): pay another way | — |
The $100 top-up on Zip. Today you pay Zip about $25 plus the origination fee, which Zip collects with the first payment. Roughly $25 follows at two, four and six weeks. In Zip's own $400 example the fee is spread so all four payments are equal ($102 each), and the exact schedule is on Zip's screen before you accept. Zip pays Kunavo the full amount up front (Stripe), so the wallet shows $110, bonus included, as soon as the checkout completes. Your later payments to Zip don't change it.
How far $110 goes: Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1.40 per million input tokens and $7.00 per million output tokens. A short request, 2,000 tokens in and 500 out, comes to about $0.0063, so the balance covers on the order of 17,460 such requests, and more on Claude Haiku 4.5 ($0.70 in, $3.50 out). A Claude Code session re-sends a large context on every turn, so expect far fewer requests than that.
No Zip top-up has settled on Kunavo's account yet, so we can't yet say how long the credit takes to land after Zip approves. If the wallet looks unchanged, reload Billing before starting another checkout. Paying twice would open two Zip plans, each with its own origination fee.
Paying with Zip at Kunavo, from sign-up to first call
- Have a Zip account ready, or be prepared to open one on Zip's page: Zip verifies your mobile number and takes a US credit or debit card for the repayments (Zip's FAQ). The first 25% is charged to that card today.
- Sign up at Kunavo (email or Google; no card needed), then go to Billing and choose the $100 top-up, the amount where Zip was confirmed, or a larger one up to Zip's $1,500 ceiling.
- On Stripe's page, confirm the total reads in US dollars and select Zip. Stripe hands you over to Zip.
- On Zip, sign in, read the payment schedule with the fee included, and agree to it. Zip returns you to Stripe, which completes the order.
- With the balance showing, open API keys and create a key (it begins
sk-kn-and is displayed only once). Test it:
# After the Zip top-up is credited, this is the first call.
curl https://api.kunavo.com/v1/chat/completions \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $KUNAVO_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "claude-sonnet-5",
"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "One line: did the top-up work?"}]
}'For Claude Code, point it at Kunavo with the same key. Setting ANTHROPIC_MODEL keeps it on Claude Sonnet 5 instead of whatever model it would pick by default:
# Claude Code on the same key and the same balance
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com # no /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
claudeSetup for other clients is in Claude Code on Kunavo and the API quickstart.
Who sees Zip at Kunavo's checkout
Stripe shows Zip only when the customer's country is supported. It decides the country from the shipping address and, without one, from the IP address the checkout is opened from (Stripe). A Kunavo top-up never asks for a shipping address, so the IP address is what counts:
- US connection, prices in US dollars: Zip shows from $100 upward.
- Australia: Stripe supports Zip there too, but only when an Australian Stripe account sells to Australian buyers in AUD; a US account like Kunavo's is paired with US buyers only. When we created an Australian-dollar payment on October 3, 2026, Stripe offered cards and Link and nothing else. Zip Pay and Zip Money accounts can't be used here.
- Anywhere else, or behind a VPN that exits abroad: no Zip. Stripe will usually show prices in your local currency instead, which is the visible sign.
If you're outside the US, the by-country list in paying for Claude without a credit card shows what your checkout will offer instead.
If Zip does not appear, or Zip declines
- The $10 top-up never shows Zip. It is under Zip's $35 floor. Close the checkout and start again from the $100 amount.
- Check the currency. If the checkout shows anything other than US dollars, Stripe has not placed you in the US, and Zip will not appear.
- VPN on? Zip reads your location from the IP address, so disconnect and open the top-up again from Billing.
- Zip said no. Approval is per purchase, and Zip weighs what you already owe on other Zip orders, so this plan can be refused even if your last Zip purchase elsewhere was approved. Kunavo can't override it. Zip's FAQ suggests paying off open orders early, which can sometimes raise your limit. Also check the repayment card on your Zip account: it must be a US card, not a prepaid one, with the first 25% available on it today.
If Zip won't work for you, other pay-later services sit on the same US-dollar checkout. Klarna and Afterpay showed at both amounts we checked, so they cover the $10 top-up that Zip skips, and Affirm shows from $100; each runs its own approval and fees. To pay without borrowing, the checkout also offers Cash App Pay, ACH bank debit (credited once it settles, 3–5 business days), stablecoins (crypto guide), cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link. PayPal and Venmo are not available.
Refunds and disputes on a Zip top-up
- Kunavo's side. Refunds are case by case under the billing policy: an outage on Kunavo's side, a pricing bug, an accidental double top-up. The default is wallet credit; ask, and the refund goes back through Stripe to Zip instead.
- Wallet credit does not touch your Zip plan. Your payments to Zip carry on. If you want the money to reach Zip, ask for the refund through Stripe; Stripe can refund a Zip payment, in full or in part, up to 180 days after the charge (Stripe).
- How Zip applies it. A full refund cancels all future payments and returns what you have paid so far to your card. A partial refund comes off the last payment first and works backwards (Zip's FAQ).
- Disputes. Zip asks you to contact the merchant first. If that has not resolved it 14 days after the purchase, you can open a dispute with Zip, within 180 days of the purchase (Stripe).
What Zip cannot pay for here
- Auto-recharge. Stripe lists Zip as a one-off method with no recurring payments, and auto-recharge needs a saved card or Link, so each Zip plan starts from a checkout you open yourself.
- Top-ups above $1,500. The $5,000 top-up is over Zip's limit, so pay it another way.
- Subscriptions anywhere else. The Zip plan buys a Kunavo API balance and nothing more: no Claude Pro or Max, no ChatGPT Plus, no top-up of Anthropic Console credits.
- VAT invoices. Kunavo doesn't issue them in any country. Billing lists the top-up with its date, amount and status.
Paying with Zip changes how you pay, not what you get: the balance doesn't expire (Anthropic's Console credits lapse after a year), there is no monthly fee on Kunavo's side, and requests that fail cost nothing. Because Zip only runs on US-dollar checkouts, Stripe's 2–4% currency-conversion fee never applies to a Zip top-up.
Other ways to pay, by method
The full list by country is in paying for Claude without a credit card. Other pages that each cover one payment method: USDC and other stablecoins, UPI (India) and Pix (Brazil, in Portuguese). For what each Claude model costs per token, see the Claude API pricing guide or the pricing page.
FAQ
Can I pay for Claude Pro with Zip?
Zip is not one of the choices. Claude's web checkout takes a credit or debit card and nothing else, according to Anthropic's paid-plan billing FAQ (read October 3, 2026), and Zip appears in neither Apple's nor Google Play's US payment list, which is what the Claude mobile apps bill through. Whether a single-use Zip Virtual Card would get through claude.ai's card form is something we have not tested, and a plan that renews every month is a poor fit for a card that pays for one order.
Can I use Zip for the Claude API or Claude Code?
Yes, through a Kunavo top-up of $100 or more, paid in US dollars from the United States. Zip is offered at checkout at that amount and is not shown on the $10 top-up. The balance pays per token for the Claude API and for Claude Code on an API key, and it never expires.
Why don't I see Zip at checkout?
One of three reasons: the top-up is below $100, the checkout is shown in a currency other than US dollars, or Stripe does not place you in the United States. Stripe shows Zip only to customers in a supported country, judged here by your IP address, so a VPN that exits outside the US hides it.
How much does Zip cost?
Zip sets the fee, not Kunavo. Zip's US help center gives an origination fee of $4.00 to $62.00 for Pay in 4, depending on the purchase price and prepaid as a finance charge with the first payment; the actual fee is shown at checkout, and Zip says late fees may apply (read October 3, 2026). The top-up itself costs the same number of dollars whichever method you choose.
Does Zip do a credit check?
Zip says it never does a hard credit check. It reviews each purchase separately and can deny one that takes the total value of your Zip orders over its limits, so an approval for one purchase does not guarantee the next.
Can I put the $5,000 top-up on Zip?
No. Stripe's Zip docs limit a US Pay in 4 purchase to $35–$1,500. For larger top-ups, use another method at the same checkout, such as a card, ACH bank debit or crypto (stablecoins).
Can Zip pay for auto-recharge?
No. Stripe's Zip docs say Zip does not support recurring payments, and Kunavo's auto-recharge charges only a saved card or Link. Every Zip top-up is a checkout you complete yourself.
What happens to my Zip payments if I get a refund?
It depends on how the refund is made. Kunavo refunds as wallet credit by default, which leaves your Zip plan unchanged. A refund sent back through Stripe reaches Zip: a full refund cancels the remaining payments, and a partial one comes off the last payments first. Stripe allows Zip refunds up to 180 days after the charge.
