Pay for Claude with Afterpay: what works and what doesn't (2026)

You can't pay for Claude Pro or Max with Afterpay. Anthropic takes only cards on claude.ai, and the App Store and Google Play list no Afterpay. You can use Afterpay for the Claude API and Claude Code, through a Kunavo balance bought at a US-dollar checkout. This page covers Afterpay's limits, late fees, declines and refunds on that route.

You can't pay for Claude Pro or Max with Afterpay: Anthropic takes only credit or debit cards on claude.ai, and the App Store and Google Play, which bill the Claude app's plans, list no Afterpay among their US payment methods. Where Afterpay does work is one level down, on the Claude API itself. Kunavo is a third-party gateway that resells the Claude models by the token from a prepaid balance, and when its Stripe checkout is in US dollars, Afterpay is one of the buttons. A $10 top-up, the smallest, turns into four payments of $2.50, and the first is taken the moment you approve the plan. What you get is API credit for scripts, apps and Claude Code, with no expiry date and no monthly fee, not a Claude Pro or Max plan and not credit in Anthropic's Console. Afterpay's terms, Stripe's limits and Kunavo's prices were all checked on October 3, 2026.

Short answer: can you pay for Claude with Afterpay?

Not for the subscription, yes for the API. Here is every place a US buyer can spend money on Claude, and whether Afterpay is accepted at that checkout:

There is also a structural reason Afterpay and a subscription don't mix. Afterpay is built for single orders: in Stripe's Afterpay docs (read October 3, 2026) it is a single-use method, recurring payments are marked unsupported, and Stripe Billing, Stripe's subscription product, is not on its list of supported products. A monthly plan renews by charging a saved payment method, and Afterpay cannot be saved. Each Afterpay purchase is one order with one four-payment schedule. A prepaid API top-up fits that shape, and a Pro subscription does not.

What Afterpay does to each top-up amount

Stripe's Afterpay docs (read October 3, 2026) list two US options. Pay in 4 splits an order of $1 to $2,000 into four interest-free payments, one every two weeks. Monthly installments run 6 or 12 months, with interest, on orders of $400 to $4,000. Stripe's overall Afterpay limit is $1 to $4,000 per payment. Here is what those limits mean for each Kunavo top-up:

Top-upBalance creditedPay in 4Monthly planLate fees can't exceed (25%)Afterpay at checkout
$10$104 × $2.50Below the $400 minimum$2.50Offered at checkout
$100$1104 × $25Below the $400 minimum$25Offered at checkout
$1,000$1,2004 × $250In range: 6 or 12 months, with interest$250Within Stripe's limits; not checked at this amount
$5,000$6,250———Should not appear: above Stripe's $4,000 Afterpay maximum

On October 3, 2026, Stripe offered Afterpay on Kunavo's $10 and $100 top-ups. That means Stripe presents Afterpay on Kunavo's account; it is not a claim that an Afterpay top-up has already gone through here. The $1,000 row follows from Stripe's limits; no checkout was opened at that amount. The $5,000 top-up is above Stripe's $4,000 maximum, so Afterpay should not appear on it. The bonus on the larger top-ups is the same whichever method you pay with.

What you are approved for can be lower than the table. Afterpay sets each customer's available-to-spend from payment history, time with Afterpay and past declined transactions, and says new customers start with a lower amount (read October 3, 2026). So a first-time Afterpay user may be approved for $10 and declined for $1,000. The $1,000 top-up also falls in the range Stripe lists for Afterpay's monthly installments, which are interest-bearing. Afterpay's How it works page (read October 3, 2026) says loans with a finance fee are underwritten and issued by First Electronic Bank, and gives 36% APR as an example rate. Pay in 4 is the interest-free option.

The first payment is due at checkout. Afterpay's US Installment Agreement calls it a down payment, followed by the installment payments, and its payment-error help page puts it at typically 25% of the order. The agreement also says that for California buyers, other than the down payment, the first payment is not due for at least 15 days after the purchase.

What one installment buys: Kunavo bills Claude Sonnet 5 at $1.40 for every million tokens you send and $7.00 for every million it writes back, against Anthropic's $2.00 and $10.00. Take a modest request, 2,000 tokens in and 500 out, at about $0.0063. The $10 top-up covers about 1,587 of them, roughly 396 for each $2.50 installment. Treat that as a rough guide, not a quote. A Claude Code session re-sends its growing context on every turn, so it spends much faster.

Paying with Afterpay at Kunavo's checkout, step by step

  1. Sign up at Kunavo. Email or Google sign-in is enough, and nothing about payment is collected until you top up.
  2. In Billing, choose the amount you want to split. Afterpay was offered on the $10 and $100 amounts; skip $5,000, which is over Afterpay's ceiling at Stripe.
  3. On Stripe's checkout page, check that the amount is in US dollars, then choose Afterpay. The page tells you that you are paying Kunavo and that the money goes to your Kunavo wallet.
  4. Stripe sends you to the Afterpay app or website. Log in or sign up, choose a payment plan and accept the repayment terms. Afterpay allows 3 hours to finish (Stripe's Afterpay docs), but Kunavo's checkout page expires after 60 minutes, so finish within the hour. If it lapses, start again from Billing.
  5. Afterpay hands you back to Kunavo once the plan is approved. Stripe treats Afterpay as confirmed immediately, so the full amount (not a quarter of it) lands in your balance without the multi-day “processing” state an ACH debit sits in for 3–5 business days. If the balance looks unchanged, reload Billing rather than checking out again. Approving Afterpay a second time opens a second order, with its own four payments and its own late-fee exposure.
  6. Generate a key on the API keys page. Kunavo displays the sk-kn- key a single time, so save it somewhere safe, then try it:
terminal
# After the Afterpay top-up is credited, this is the first call.
curl https://api.kunavo.com/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KUNAVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "claude-sonnet-5",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "One line: did the top-up work?"}]
  }'

Claude Code can spend from the same balance. Set the model explicitly so it doesn't switch to its own default:

terminal
# Claude Code on the same key and the same balance
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com   # the origin, no /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
claude

Other clients and a settings-file setup are in the Claude Code setup docs. On your bank or card statement, Stripe says Afterpay payments show as AFTERPAY together with the merchant's statement descriptor.

Who sees Afterpay here

Afterpay's US Installment Agreement (last updated September 2026, read October 3, 2026) says you must be 18 or older, a US resident, and meet additional eligibility criteria. The payments can come from a US-issued checking account, a credit or debit card, a Cash App Card or Cash App Pay.

Stripe supports Afterpay customers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US, but in general availability only for domestic sales, to customers in the merchant's own country. Stripe shows Afterpay only when it places the buyer in a supported country, using the shipping address or, when there is none, the IP location. Kunavo's checkout asks for no shipping address, so it goes by where your connection appears to be.

  • United States: Afterpay appears when the checkout is in US dollars.
  • United Kingdom: the same service is called Clearpay there, and Kunavo's pound checkout does not offer it. UK buyers see cards, Link, Bacs Direct Debit (credited after several business days) and Pay by Bank where their bank supports it.
  • Canada, Australia and New Zealand: no Afterpay at Kunavo. The checkout offers cards and Link, plus Apple Pay or Google Pay on devices that support them.

Every other country's options are on the hub, the no-credit-card payment guide.

Late fees: what a missed payment costs

Pay in 4 costs nothing extra if every payment is on time. If one is late, Afterpay's US Installment Agreement (last updated September 2026, read October 3, 2026) sets the rules:

  • A late fee can be charged once an installment is still unpaid 10 days after its due date, or after a longer grace period where state law requires one.
  • Each late fee is at most $8, and never more than state law allows.
  • All late fees on one order together cannot exceed 25% of the order value at the time of purchase. On a $10 top-up, that caps them at $2.50, less than a single $8 fee. The table above gives the cap for each top-up.
  • Rhode Island residents pay no late fees.

Those fees are Afterpay's. Kunavo charges nothing for a late Afterpay payment, and the balance you bought is credited in full at checkout.

If Afterpay doesn't appear, or is declined

Afterpay isn't in the list

  • The checkout isn't in US dollars. Stripe showed your local currency because it placed you outside the US, usually because of a VPN, a proxy or travel. Turn it off and reopen the checkout from Billing. Switching the currency back to dollars may not be enough, because Stripe also checks which country you are in.
  • You picked the $5,000 top-up. It is above Stripe's $4,000 Afterpay maximum.
  • The page expired. Kunavo's checkout lasts 60 minutes. Start a new one from Billing.

Afterpay declined the order

Afterpay's help page on payment errors (read October 3, 2026) gives its own reasons:

  • an overdue payment on another Afterpay order;
  • an order above your available-to-spend limit;
  • not enough money on the linked card or bank account for the first payment, typically 25% of the order;
  • “Transaction Not Eligible”, which Afterpay returns for restricted items such as gift cards. Stripe offering Afterpay on Kunavo's account does not mean Afterpay will approve every prepaid-balance order, so this is a possible reason too.

The same checkout has other ways to pay: cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay, Link, Cash App Pay, Klarna (US-dollar checkouts only), ACH bank debit (credited after 3–5 business days) and crypto (stablecoins; see paying for an AI API with crypto). From the $100 top-up, Affirm and Zip also appear; the lender sets its own terms and runs its own approval. Not offered: PayPal (so no PayPal Pay Later), Venmo, and Clearpay.

Refunds when you paid with Afterpay

A top-up already split into four payments raises one question a card top-up doesn't: if Kunavo gives the money back, what happens to the payments you haven't made yet? Refund requests go to support@kunavo.com and are judged one at a time under the billing policy, which lists cases such as a doubled top-up, a pricing error or a Kunavo outage that burned budget. The default is wallet credit, and a refund back through Stripe is available if you ask. With Afterpay, which one you pick decides what happens to your schedule:

  • Wallet credit stays on Kunavo and does not reach Afterpay, so your installments continue as scheduled.
  • A refund through Stripe goes to Afterpay, which cancels the payments still to come and returns what you have already paid. Stripe allows a full or partial Afterpay refund up to 120 days after the payment, and it can take up to 10 business days (Stripe's Afterpay docs, read October 3, 2026).
  • Afterpay's returns help (read October 3, 2026) says it pushes your next payment back while a retailer processes a return, though not always if the return lands within 24 hours of that payment. A processed refund can take up to 10 business days to reach your card, depending on the bank. Until the refund goes through, keep paying on schedule so a late fee doesn't start.

Anthropic's own Console credits, by contrast, are non-refundable and lapse a year after purchase.

Before you choose Afterpay for a top-up

  • Have the first payment ready today. Roughly a quarter of the order ($2.50 on $10) comes off the linked card or account at approval. If it can't, Afterpay declines the order.
  • Each top-up is its own Afterpay order. Two top-ups mean two schedules, both counted against your available-to-spend. Auto-recharge can't help here: it only charges a saved card or Link, and Afterpay can't be saved.
  • Afterpay only shows at a US-dollar checkout. Not on pounds (no Clearpay), not on other currencies.
  • Top-ups from $10 to $1,000 only. The $5,000 tier is over Stripe's $4,000 Afterpay ceiling. Your personal Afterpay limit may be lower than either.
  • It buys API usage, not a chat plan. The balance pays for API calls and Claude Code on a key and does not expire. Requests that fail with a 4xx or 5xx error cost nothing. It does not unlock anything on claude.ai.

FAQ

Can I buy Claude Pro with Afterpay?

No. On claude.ai, Anthropic's billing FAQ limits web subscriptions to credit and debit cards (read October 3, 2026). In the apps, Apple and Google Play bill the plan, and neither store's US payment list has Afterpay. Afterpay also can't run a subscription on Stripe at all, since Stripe marks it single-use with no recurring payments. What Afterpay can buy is a prepaid Kunavo balance for the Claude API and Claude Code, which is separate from a Pro or Max plan.

Does the Claude app on iPhone or Android accept Afterpay?

No. A plan bought inside the app is charged by the App Store or Google Play, not by Anthropic. Apple's US options are Apple's own balance, Apple Card, Apple Cash and Apple Pay, plus most cards and PayPal. Google Play's are cards, Google Pay and Play balances, gift cards, Cash App Pay, PayPal and Venmo. Afterpay is on neither list (both read October 3, 2026).

How is a Kunavo top-up split with Afterpay?

Afterpay's Pay in 4 splits an order of $1 to $2,000 into four interest-free payments, one every two weeks (Stripe's Afterpay docs, read October 3, 2026). The first payment is due at checkout. The $10 minimum top-up becomes four payments of $2.50, and a $100 top-up becomes four payments of $25. The full balance is credited at once.

Afterpay isn't showing at checkout. Why?

Afterpay appears only when Kunavo's checkout is in US dollars and Stripe places you in the United States. Stripe offers Afterpay only to buyers in the merchant's own country. A VPN or a connection abroad can make Stripe show local currency and drop Afterpay. Afterpay should not appear on the $5,000 top-up either, which is above Stripe's $4,000 Afterpay maximum. In the UK the same service is called Clearpay, and Kunavo's pound checkout does not offer it.

What happens if I miss an Afterpay payment?

Afterpay, not Kunavo, may charge a late fee once an installment is still unpaid 10 days after its due date (longer where state law requires). It is at most $8 per late payment, and all late fees on one order are capped at 25% of the order value, which is $2.50 on a $10 top-up. Rhode Island residents pay no late fees (Afterpay US Installment Agreement, last updated September 2026). Kunavo charges no fee of its own.

Can auto-recharge use Afterpay?

No. Stripe does not support Afterpay for recurring payments or for saving it for later use, and Kunavo's auto-recharge charges only a saved card or Link. Each Afterpay top-up is a separate Afterpay order that you start by hand.

If Kunavo refunds me, do my remaining Afterpay payments stop?

Only if the refund goes back through Stripe. Then Afterpay cancels the payments still to come and returns what you already paid; Stripe allows that up to 120 days after the purchase, and it can take up to 10 business days. Kunavo's default refund is wallet credit, which never reaches Afterpay, so your schedule would carry on. Ask support@kunavo.com for a Stripe refund if you want the plan closed.

Is my balance credited right away with Afterpay?

Yes, once Stripe confirms the payment. Stripe lists Afterpay's confirmation as immediate, so it does not wait in "processing" the way ACH bank debit does for 3–5 business days. Approve the plan within 60 minutes, because Kunavo's checkout page expires after an hour.
