OpenRouter Alternatives [2026 Edition] — Compare by Purpose: Cheaper, Multimodal, Your Own Key, and Open Source

Four reasons to switch from OpenRouter are unit price, images/video/music, managing your own key, and payment methods. We show the right alternative for each reason, plus cases where staying with OpenRouter makes sense, together with a cost table for the same work.

There are usually four reasons to look for an OpenRouter alternative: you want lower per-model pricing (OpenRouter passes through providers' list prices and charges a 5.5% fee, with a minimum of $0.80, each time you buy credits by card), you want image, video, and music models available with one key, you want to bring your provider keys together under a management layer you operate yourself, or you want to pay using a method OpenRouter does not list. This article matches options to each reason and covers cases where staying with OpenRouter makes sense.

In short, if you want to use Claude for less, you can get the following from Kunavo at 30% below Anthropic's list price: All Claude models (Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1.40 / $7.00 per 1 million input/output tokens, compared with $2.00 / $10.00 at list price). For self-hosted open source, consider LiteLLM; for routing and observability with your own keys, Portkey or Helicone; and for running open-weight models at scale, Together AI.

To be transparent, Kunavo is our product, and we list it first. Our claims about Kunavo, with figures, are on Kunavo vs. OpenRouter; we have also given each other tool a serious recommendation of its own.

Quick guide by use case

AlternativeTypeChoose it for
KunavoInference gateway (resold access)Claude below list price + image, video, and music through one key
LiteLLMSelf-hosted proxy (your own keys)An open-source management layer you operate yourself
PortkeyHosted gateway (your own keys)Routing, guardrails, observability
HeliconeObservability layer (your own keys)Logs, cost tracking, evaluations
Together AIOpen-weight hostingLlama-family models on dedicated infrastructure
AIMLAPIAggregatorA broad selection of media and text models
Cloudflare AI GatewayEdge proxy (your own keys)Caching, rate limits, analytics

There is one key distinction: inference gateways (OpenRouter, Kunavo, AIMLAPI) resell model access through a single balance, while bring-your-own-key tools (LiteLLM, Portkey, Helicone, Cloudflare) add management features to provider accounts you already have. You can combine the two, and many teams use both. For more detail on how they work, see LLM gateway explained (in English).

How much does the same workload cost?

Cost to process 10 million input tokens and 1 million output tokens with Claude, without caching. The OpenRouter column adds the 5.5% fee charged when buying credits by card to the unchanged list-price rates.

ModelAnthropic list priceOpenRouter (card top-up)Kunavo
Claude Sonnet 5$30.00$31.65$21.00
Claude Fable 5$150.00$158.25$105.00

Using cache reads or batches changes both figures. Kunavo’s unit prices are calculated from the catalog at each build, while OpenRouter’s unit prices are the list prices shown in its model list on September 30, 2026.

1. Kunavo — Claude below list price, plus multimodal models with one key

Kunavo overlaps with OpenRouter on the chat side. You can call Claude and GPT through a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint, with three differences. Price: Claude is 30% cheaper than Anthropic’s list price, and Claude Sonnet 5 is $1.40 / $7.00 (list price $2.00 / $10.00). There are no top-up fees. Modalities: images (Nano Banana, GPT-Image-2), video (Veo 3), and music (Suno, not in OpenRouter’s model list) are official endpoints using the same key. Payment: Stripe Checkout supports cards including JCB, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link, and more. Usage-based billing starts at $10, there is no subscription, and the balance does not expire.

The trade-off is catalog breadth. Kunavo focuses on frontier models it can offer below list price and does not include long-tail models. It has no free models, runs on shared upstream capacity, and has no contractual SLA. Operations are in a single US East region. To estimate your own usage, use the LLM cost calculator; for a feature-by-feature comparison, see Kunavo vs. OpenRouter.

2. LiteLLM — self-hosted open source

LiteLLM is a Python proxy you run yourself. It puts a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint in front of your provider keys and handles model routing, per-key budgets, and logs. It is the standard answer for an “open-source OpenRouter alternative,” but note that it resells nothing. You contract and pay providers directly, and operate the proxy yourself. It suits cases where compliance or procurement requires your own contracts. See Kunavo vs. LiteLLM for details.

3. Portkey — hosted management for your own keys

Portkey is a hosted gateway that sits on top of your own provider keys. It offers conditional routing, fallbacks, retries, guardrails, and request analytics without requiring you to operate infrastructure. You continue paying providers directly and pay Portkey a platform fee. It is for teams that want to bring many internal apps under one policy layer. See Kunavo vs. Portkey for details.

4. Helicone — start with observability

Helicone approaches the same space from the logging side. Insert it as a proxy or send data through an asynchronous SDK to add per-request traces, cost attribution, caching, and evaluations to existing provider traffic. If your concern is “I don't know where our LLM spend is going,” start here. See Kunavo vs. Helicone for details.

5. Together AI — open weights at scale

Together hosts open-weight models, including Llama-family chat, embeddings, and image models, on its own serverless and dedicated infrastructure. It is more a place to run open models quickly than a router. It is a strong option if your strategy centers on open weights rather than frontier APIs. See Kunavo vs. Together AI for details.

6. AIMLAPI — media-focused aggregator

AIMLAPI brings a broad range of text and media models together behind one API, overlapping with OpenRouter in model breadth and image and video coverage. Compare its pricing structure and payment terms against your usage. See Kunavo vs. AIMLAPI for details.

7. Cloudflare AI Gateway — edge proxy

Cloudflare AI Gateway is a proxy at the edge, in front of the provider keys you already have. It provides response caching, rate limits, retries, and analytics, but does not resell inference. As a pure management layer, it can be combined with any inference source, including OpenRouter or Kunavo. See Kunavo vs. Cloudflare AI Gateway for details.

Paying from Japan: fees, payment methods, and invoices

The payment methods listed in OpenRouter’s FAQ are major credit cards, AliPay, and cryptocurrency via USDC (as of September 30, 2026; PayPal is “coming soon”). Each credit purchase by card incurs 5.5% (minimum $0.80); USDC incurs a fee of 5%.

Kunavo supports cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB), Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link in Stripe Checkout, with no top-up fees. Both prices are denominated in dollars. Kunavo Checkout may display an amount converted to yen by Stripe, and the exchange rate includes a 2–4% foreign-exchange fee paid by the buyer. Paying in dollars avoids this fee, but the card issuer’s exchange rate and foreign transaction fee may apply. For businesses: Kunavo’s standard Checkout does not issue qualified invoices (invoices) with a registration number.

For an overview of Claude payment methods, see Claude payment methods; for model-specific rates, see Claude API pricing; and for how OpenRouter itself works, see What is OpenRouter?.

When staying with OpenRouter makes sense

  • You need a long tail of models. No alternative listed here can fully match the hundreds of models from at least 80 providers (the company’s pricing page, as of September 30, 2026).
  • You want to use free models. Models with :free and the openrouter/free router are limited to 50 requests per day, or 1,000 per day after purchasing at least $10 in credits (the company’s FAQ). Kunavo has no free models.
  • Batch jobs that can wait. OpenRouter's model list includes a :batch version of Claude at half the list price (verified September 30, 2026). For high-volume processing that is not urgent, this costs less than discounts on real-time calls, and Kunavo has no batch endpoint.
  • You want to bring your own provider keys. On the pay-as-you-go plan, BYOK has no fee up to $25,000 per month at list-price equivalent; amounts above that are charged 5% (same FAQ).
  • I want to pay in USDC. OpenRouter accepts USDC with a 5% fee. Kunavo’s cryptocurrency (stablecoin) option appears only in the US-dollar Checkout for the United States.

Switch in two lines

All the alternatives listed here support the OpenAI protocol, so migration only requires changing base_url and your key. The model ID is the only thing that changes: OpenRouter's provider-prefixed ID (anthropic/claude-sonnet-5) becomes an ID without the provider prefix (claude-sonnet-5).

switch.py
import os
from openai import OpenAI

# OpenRouter・Kunavo・LiteLLM は同じ OpenAI 互換プロトコル
client = OpenAI(
    api_key=os.environ["KUNAVO_API_KEY"],   # 旧: OPENROUTER_API_KEY
    base_url="https://api.kunavo.com/v1",    # 旧: https://openrouter.ai/api/v1
)

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-5",   # 旧: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

What to leave to the gateway—routing, failover, caching, and spending limits—is covered in the OpenAI-compatible API guide (in English).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best OpenRouter alternative?

It depends on why you are switching. If you want frontier models such as Claude below list price, plus image, video, and music models with the same key, choose Kunavo (OpenAI-compatible, with Claude 30% below Anthropic's list price). For a self-hosted open-source proxy in front of your own provider keys, choose LiteLLM. For hosted management of your own keys with routing and observability, choose Portkey or Helicone. For running open-weight models at scale, choose Together AI.

Is there a cheaper alternative to OpenRouter?

Yes. OpenRouter passes through providers' list prices without a markup and charges a 5.5% fee, with a minimum of $0.80, when you buy credits by card (according to its FAQ as of September 30, 2026). Kunavo offers Claude 30% below Anthropic's list price. Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1.40 / $7.00 per 1 million input/output tokens (list price $2.00 / $10.00). For 10 million input and 1 million output tokens, the cost is $31.65 through OpenRouter with a card and $21.00 through Kunavo.

What is an open-source OpenRouter alternative?

LiteLLM. It is a self-hosted OpenAI-compatible proxy that sits in front of your provider keys. Since it does not resell inference, you manage your own provider contracts and payments.

Can I pay with a Japanese credit card or JCB?

The payment methods listed in OpenRouter’s FAQ are major credit cards, AliPay, and USDC (as of September 30, 2026). Kunavo supports cards including JCB (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB), Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link in Stripe Checkout, and you can add prepaid credit starting at $10. Kunavo’s standard Checkout does not issue qualified invoices (invoices).

When is it better to stay with OpenRouter?

When model breadth (hundreds of models from over 80 providers) is the top priority; when you want free models; when you want to run non-urgent jobs with Claude's :batch version (half the list price); when you want to bring your own provider keys; or when you want to pay in USDC. If you need below-list-price rates, Suno on the same key, or a management layer you operate yourself, an alternative may suit you better.
