OpenRouter Alternatives (2026) — Cheaper, Multimodal, Your Own Keys, EU Considerations: An Honest Assessment

People usually leave OpenRouter for cheaper tokens, media models on one key, their own provider keys under their own control — or processing in the EU. This overview matches each reason to the appropriate tool, with a cost table for the same work and the cases where you should stay with OpenRouter.

People usually look for an OpenRouter alternative for one of four reasons: they want lower per-token prices (OpenRouter passes through providers' list prices and charges a 5.5 % fee, with a minimum of 0.80 $, when you buy credits by card), they want image, video, and music models accessible with the same key, they want to bring their provider keys together under a management layer they operate themselves, or they need data processing in the EU—a question that ranks near the top in German search results. This overview matches each reason with a suitable tool, including cases where OpenRouter remains the right choice.

The short answer: For cheaper Claude, Kunavo lists All Claude models 30% below Anthropic's list price (Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1.40 / $7.00 per 1M input/output tokens, compared with $2.00 / $10.00 at list price). For open source you can self-host, consider LiteLLM; for routing and observability with your own keys, Portkey or Helicone; and for open-weight models at scale, Together AI. If you need data processing contractually located in the EU, Kunavo is the wrong fit—more on that below.

To be transparent, Kunavo is our product, and we list it first. Our claims about Kunavo, with figures, are on Kunavo vs. OpenRouter; we have also given each other tool a serious recommendation of its own.

Quick list

One distinction does most of the work: inference gateways (OpenRouter, Kunavo, AIMLAPI) resell model access through a single balance, while BYO-key tools (LiteLLM, Portkey, Helicone, Cloudflare) add a control layer over provider accounts you already have. The two can be combined, and many teams use one of each. The LLM gateway guide (English) explains the pattern.

What the same workload costs

Cost of 10 million input tokens and 1 million output tokens with Claude, without prompt caching. The OpenRouter column is the pass-through list price plus the 5.5 % fee when buying credits by card.

ModelAnthropic list priceOpenRouter (credits by card)Kunavo
Claude Sonnet 5$30.00$31.65$21.00
Claude Fable 5$150.00$158.25$105.00

Using cache hits or batch processing changes both figures. Kunavo’s rates are calculated from the catalog at each build; OpenRouter’s rates are the list prices from its model list, retrieved on September 30, 2026.

1. Kunavo — Claude below list price, multimodal with one key

Kunavo overlaps with OpenRouter on the chat side—Claude and GPT through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint—and differs in three respects. Price: Claude is 30% below Anthropic’s list price, and Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1.40 / $7.00 (list price $2.00 / $10.00), with no top-up fee. Modalities: image (Nano Banana, GPT-Image-2), video (Veo 3), and music (Suno, not listed in OpenRouter’s model list) are regular endpoints using the same key. Payment: Stripe Checkout with cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link, and local methods depending on the country; prepaid starting at $10, no subscription, and the balance does not expire.

The tradeoff is catalog breadth: Kunavo offers frontier models it can provide below list price, rather than hundreds of niche models. There are no free models, service runs on shared upstream capacity without a contractual SLA, and there is a single region in the eastern United States. Run your own numbers in the LLM cost calculator; see the point-by-point comparison at Kunavo vs. OpenRouter.

2. LiteLLM — open source, self-hosted

LiteLLM is a Python proxy that you run yourself: an OpenAI-compatible endpoint in front of your own provider keys, with model routing, per-key budgets, and logging. It is the standard answer to “open-source alternative to OpenRouter,” with one important caveat: it does not resell anything. You contract with providers yourself, pay them directly, and run the proxy. Because you configure the endpoints yourself, you also decide where requests are processed. Details: Kunavo vs. LiteLLM.

3. Portkey — the hosted control layer for your own keys

Portkey is a hosted gateway over your own provider keys: conditional routing, fallbacks, retries, guardrails, and request analytics, without running your own infrastructure. Provider billing remains direct; Portkey charges for the platform. Suited to teams that want to bring many internal applications under one policy layer. Details: Kunavo vs. Portkey.

4. Helicone — observability first

Helicone approaches the space through logging: connect it as a proxy or use an asynchronous SDK, then get per-request traces, cost attribution, caching, and evals across your existing provider traffic. If the problem is “we don't know where our LLM budget is going,” start here. Details: Kunavo vs. Helicone.

5. Together AI — open weights at scale

Together hosts open-weight models — Llama chat, embeddings, image — on its own serverless and dedicated infrastructure. It is less a router than a place to run open models fast, and the right choice if your strategy is open weights rather than frontier APIs. Details: Kunavo vs. Together AI.

6. AIMLAPI — aggregator focused on media

AIMLAPI brings together a broad catalog of text and media models behind one API and overlaps with OpenRouter in breadth and image/video coverage. Compare its pricing model and payment terms with your usage profile. Details: Kunavo vs. AIMLAPI.

7. Cloudflare AI Gateway — the edge proxy

Cloudflare's AI Gateway sits at the edge in front of provider keys you already have: response caching, rate limiting, retries, and analytics. It does not resell inference; it is a pure control layer and can be combined with any inference source, including OpenRouter and Kunavo. Details: Kunavo vs. Cloudflare AI Gateway.

From Germany: EU data residency and payment

The most common question from Germany is about a “German or EU alternative.” The honest answer: Kunavo is not one. Kunavo's gateway runs in a single region in the eastern United States and forwards requests from there to model providers. If EU processing is a contractual requirement, a BYO-key gateway in your own infrastructure is a better fit — for example, LiteLLM in front of the EU endpoints specified by your provider contracts — because you decide where requests go.

Payment: OpenRouter’s FAQ lists major credit cards, AliPay, and cryptocurrency in USDC (as of September 30, 2026; PayPal is “in progress”). Card-based credit purchases incur 5.5 % (minimum 0.80 $), and USDC purchases incur 5 %. Kunavo’s Stripe Checkout accepts cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link with no top-up fee; EPS is also available in Austria, and Bancontact in Belgium. Both set their prices in US dollars; Kunavo Checkout displays the amount in local currency through Stripe, and the exchange rate includes a 2–4% fee paid by the buyer—paying in dollars avoids it.

Rates for all Claude models are in the Claude API pricing guide.

When OpenRouter remains the right choice

  • You need the longest model catalog. None of the alternatives listed here fully matches the hundreds of models from more than 80 providers (OpenRouter’s pricing page, as of September 30, 2026).
  • You want free models. The :free variants and the openrouter/free router are limited to 50 requests per day, or 1,000 after purchasing at least $10 in credits (according to the FAQ). Kunavo has none.
  • Your workload can wait. OpenRouter's model list includes :batch variants of Claude models at half the list price (checked September 30, 2026). For batch processing that isn't time-sensitive, this is cheaper than any discount on real-time calls; Kunavo has no batch endpoint.
  • You bring your own provider keys. On the pay-as-you-go plan, the first 25,000 $ of inference at list price per month is fee-free, then 5 % (same FAQ).
  • You pay in USDC. OpenRouter accepts USDC with a 5 % fee; at Kunavo, crypto (stablecoins) appears only in the US Checkout in US dollars.

Switching takes two lines

Every serious alternative speaks the OpenAI protocol, so migration means changing base_url and the key. Only the model ID changes: OpenRouter's provider-prefixed ID (anthropic/claude-sonnet-5) becomes the unprefixed ID (claude-sonnet-5).

switch.py
import os
from openai import OpenAI

# OpenRouter, Kunavo und LiteLLM sprechen dasselbe OpenAI-Protokoll
client = OpenAI(
    api_key=os.environ["KUNAVO_API_KEY"],   # vorher: OPENROUTER_API_KEY
    base_url="https://api.kunavo.com/v1",    # vorher: https://openrouter.ai/api/v1
)

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-5",   # vorher: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

What a gateway should handle for you — routing, failover, caching, spending limits — is covered in the OpenAI-compatible API guide (English).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best OpenRouter alternative?

It depends on why you're switching. For frontier models like Claude below list price, plus image, video, and music on the same key: Kunavo (OpenAI-compatible, Claude 30 % below Anthropic's list price). For a self-hosted open-source proxy over your own provider keys: LiteLLM. For hosted control of your own keys with routing and observability: Portkey or Helicone. For open-weight models at scale: Together AI.

Are there cheaper alternatives to OpenRouter?

Yes. OpenRouter passes through provider list prices without a markup and charges a 5.5 % fee, with a minimum of 0.80 $, when you buy credits by card (FAQ, as of September 30, 2026). Kunavo lists Claude 30 % below Anthropic's list price, with Claude Sonnet 5 at $1.40 / $7.00 per 1M input/output tokens (list $2.00 / $10.00). For 10 million input tokens and 1 million output tokens, that comes to $31.65 on OpenRouter with card-purchased credits and $21.00 on Kunavo.

Is there an open-source alternative to OpenRouter?

LiteLLM: a self-hosted, OpenAI-compatible proxy in front of your own provider keys. It does not resell inference, so provider contracts and payments are your responsibility.

Is there an EU alternative to OpenRouter?

If processing must take place in the EU under contract, a self-hosted BYO-key gateway such as LiteLLM in front of the EU endpoints in your provider contracts is the right setup, because you decide where requests go. Kunavo does not meet this requirement: its gateway runs in a single region in the eastern United States and forwards requests from there to model providers.

When should I stay with OpenRouter?

If catalog breadth (hundreds of models from over 80 providers) is the priority, if you use free models, if you can route non-urgent work through :batch variants of Claude models at half the list price, if you bring your own provider keys, or if you pay in USDC. If you need rates below list price, Suno on the same key, or a self-hosted control layer, an alternative is a better fit.
