You cannot pay for Claude Pro and Max with EPS on claude.ai: For subscriptions on the web, Anthropic accepts only credit or debit cards. EPS works only indirectly: in Austria, you can use EPS to top up your Apple Account balance, which according to Apple can then be used to pay for subscriptions, such as Claude Pro in the iPhone app ( €22.00 per month in the Austrian App Store). For the Claude API and Claude Code with an API key, EPS is offered directly: in Kunavo’s euro checkout, as a top-up to a prepaid balance starting at $10. This balance is not a Claude subscription; it pays for API calls per token. Not available in Kunavo checkout: PayPal, SEPA direct debit, and Klarna, which is offered only to buyers in the United States. Information from Anthropic, Apple, Google, Stripe, and eps: as of October 3, 2026; Kunavo payment methods and prices verified on October 3, 2026.
Short answer: Can you pay for Claude with EPS?
It depends on what you are paying for: the subscription or the API. They are billed separately, and EPS can be used directly for only one of them:
- Claude Pro or Max in the iPhone app: indirectly, through Apple Account balance. Subscriptions purchased in the app are billed by the App Store, and in Austria Apple Account balance can be topped up with EPS. Details in the next section.
- Claude API and Claude Code: yes, through Kunavo. EPS is offered in Kunavo’s Stripe checkout as soon as the amount is displayed in euros. You top up a prepaid balance, which is debited per token.
Claude Pro and Max: EPS only through Apple Account balance
- Choose Pro or Max in the Claude app for iPhone or iPad.
- In the App Store payment window, check whether the balance appears as a payment method before confirming.
Two limitations: Apple notes for EPS that this payment method cannot be used for Family Sharing. Apple also describes the balance rule generally, not for each app; we have not tested whether the Claude subscription is actually paid from the balance. Therefore, initially top up only the amount for one month.
Im Austrian App Store führt die Claude-App diese Abos als In-App-Käufe (angesehen am October 3, 2026):
| Subscription (in-app purchase) | Price in the Austrian App Store |
|---|---|
| Claude Pro, monthly | 22,00 € |
| Claude Pro, annual | 249,99 € |
| Claude Max 5x, monthly | 149,99 € |
| Claude Max 20x, monthly | 299,99 € |
A Kunavo balance pays for none of these subscriptions. Kunavo sells neither Claude Pro nor Max, but API access to the same Claude models.
How the eps transfer works
- Choose a bank.
- Sign in to online banking. IBAN, Betrag and Empfänger tippen Sie nicht ein: Laut eps-ueberweisung.at „bedarf [es] keiner weiteren Eingaben wie etwa IBAN, Betrag oder Händler“. Eine Registrierung für EPS ist nicht nötig.
- Authorize. Authorize the payment with a TAN as usual; Stripe mentions a scanner or SMS, while Raiffeisen mentions a TAN or digital signature.
- Immediate confirmation.
Which banks?
EPS at Kunavo: step by step
Through Kunavo, you can call Claude (and, if desired, GPT models) with a single API key; payment comes from a prepaid balance. For an EPS top-up, you need an Austrian current account with online banking and at least $10.
1. Create an account
Create a Kunavo account with an email address or Google login. Kunavo does not ask for payment details at this stage; they are requested only at checkout.
2. Choose an amount
Under Billing, choose how much balance to buy; the minimum is $10. Kunavo lists the tiers in US dollars, just as token prices are calculated in dollars. The conversion to euros happens only in the next step.
3. Choose EPS in Stripe Checkout
4. Choose a bank and authorize with a TAN
After selecting EPS, choose your bank, sign in to online banking, and authorize the prefilled payment with a TAN. Neither Stripe nor eps-ueberweisung.at specifies a separate maximum limit for EPS; your bank determines which amounts your online banking allows.
5. Check the balance and create an API key
Once Stripe reports the payment as successful, Kunavo credits the balance to your account. If it is still missing after returning from online banking, refresh Billing and do not start a second EPS payment: it would simply be credited as additional balance. Once the amount is there, create a key under API Keys and copy it immediately: the key with the prefix sk-kn- is displayed only once.
For context: Stripe offers EPS for payments in euros, which is why it appears in Kunavo’s checkout. However, no EPS top-up has yet been completed through Kunavo. If EPS does not appear for you, debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link work as alternatives.
Claude Code with the EPS balance
With the key, Claude Code runs through Kunavo instead of through a subscription. Set these environment variables:
# Claude Code mit dem Kunavo-Key (Anthropic-Messages-Format)
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com # nur der Origin, ohne /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL=claude-opus-5-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL=claude-haiku-4-5
What EPS cannot do
- No automatic top-ups.
- Euro only.
- No chargeback like with cards.
- No Claude subscription. The balance pays for API calls through Kunavo, not Claude Pro or Max and not balance in Anthropic’s Console.
- No invoice showing VAT. Checkout does not request a VAT identification number; what you can use instead for accounting is explained below in the frequently asked questions.
Other payment methods in Kunavo checkout
These payment methods are offered to buyers in Austria at checkout:
| Payment method | Where | Note |
|---|---|---|
| EPS | Austria, checkout in euros | Redirect to your bank’s online banking, authorize with a TAN; each top-up is manual |
| Card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay) | everywhere | Credit and debit cards, including a bank card, provided they carry the Debit Mastercard or Visa Debit logo |
| Apple Pay | Safari, iPhone, and iPad | with a card in the wallet, including a debit card |
| Google Pay | Chrome and Android with Google Pay set up | with a card in Google Pay, including a debit card |
| Link | everywhere except India | Stripe's payment service, which stores your card; automatic top-ups are also possible with it |
Not offered: PayPal, SEPA direct debit, bank transfer in advance, Klarna (only for buyers in the United States), giropay, Sofort, and paysafecard. The options available in other countries are listed in the Billing documentation.
What it costs
Prices are listed in US dollars per 1 million tokens:
| Model | Kunavo (Input / Output) | At Anthropic (Input / Output) |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Sonnet 5 | $1,40 / $7,00 | $2,00 / $10,00 |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | $0,70 / $3,50 | $1,00 / $5,00 |
To give a sense of scale: sending 2.000 tokens to Claude Sonnet 5 and receiving 500 in return costs approximately $0,0063. An EPS top-up of $10 covers roughly 1.580 requests of this size (without prompt caching). All models are listed in the Claude API pricing guide; use your own figures in the Token Cost Calculator.
The conversion to euros.
Larger top-ups provide bonus balance: $100 becomes $110, $1.000 becomes $1.200 and $5.000 becomes $6.250.
If EPS is missing at checkout or the payment fails
- Checkout displays US dollars. EPS appears only for payments in euros. Stripe selects the currency based on your location: disable your VPN or proxy and reopen checkout from Billing.
- The bank declines the payment. Check in online banking whether your transfer limit or insufficient balance prevented the payment, and try again.
- The bank window was closed. If authorization was canceled, restart the top-up from Billing; an unauthorized payment is neither debited nor credited.
If it does not work, debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link remain available in the same checkout. The guide How to pay for Claude without a credit card explains how to pay for Claude without a credit card, including from Germany and Switzerland. To get started: create an account, top up $10 via EPS, and connect Claude Code with the key.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Claude Pro with EPS?
Not on claude.ai: For subscriptions purchased on the web, Anthropic accepts only credit or debit cards (Help Center, read on October 3, 2026). Indirectly, yes: Apple lists EPS in Austria as a way to top up Apple Account balance, and according to Apple, that balance can also be used to buy subscriptions. Claude Pro costs €22.00 per month in the iPhone app in the Austrian App Store. Whether the App Store actually pays for the Claude subscription from the balance is shown in the payment window before purchase; Apple describes the rule generally, not for each app.
Does Anthropic accept PayPal or bank transfers?
Not PayPal: Anthropic states that it does not accept third-party payment providers such as PayPal or Venmo. Anthropic accepts bank transfers only as ACH, a US payment method, and only for self-service Enterprise plans and API accounts with monthly billing (Help Center, “Why was my card declined?”, read on October 3, 2026). For a regular Pro or Max subscription on the web, you need a credit or debit card.
Which banks support EPS?
According to Stripe, all Austrian banks. Stripe’s documentation lists 27 entries, including Erste Bank and Sparkassen, Raiffeisen Bankengruppe Österreich, Bank Austria, BAWAG P.S.K., Volksbank Gruppe, Oberbank, the Hypo banks, and Easybank. You sign in with your usual online banking credentials; you do not need to register for EPS.
Is the balance available immediately after an EPS payment?
Yes, in almost all cases. According to eps-ueberweisung.at, your bank sends an electronic payment confirmation to the merchant during payment, and according to Raiffeisen, EPS orders accepted by the bank are confirmed immediately and executed irrevocably. Kunavo credits the balance as soon as Stripe confirms the payment. If you do not see it immediately, reload the Billing page instead of paying a second time.
Can I top up automatically with EPS?
No. According to Stripe, EPS is a one-time payment method that cannot be saved, and Stripe Checkout does not offer EPS for saving a payment method or for subscriptions. You therefore make each EPS top-up manually. For automatic top-ups, save a card (a debit card is sufficient) or use Link.
Why is EPS not shown at checkout?
EPS is available only to customers in Austria and only for payments in euros. If checkout displays the amount in US dollars, EPS is unavailable, for example because of a VPN or proxy with a location outside Austria. Disable it and reopen checkout from Billing. If that does not help, pay in the same checkout with a debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link.
Will my bank card work?
The decisive factor is the logo on the card. If it carries the Debit Mastercard or Visa Debit logo, it works in the Kunavo checkout like a credit card, including in Apple Pay or Google Pay. The checkout accepts cards from the Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay networks; if your card carries none of these logos, pay with EPS. The same principle applies at Anthropic: credit or debit card.
Will I receive an invoice with Austrian VAT?
No. Kunavo does not issue an invoice showing Austrian VAT, and you cannot enter a VAT identification number at checkout. You can see the date, amount, and status of each EPS top-up under Billing. If you need more for accounting, write to contact@kunavo.com.
