Nano Banana API — use the OpenAI SDK as-is, per-image pricing and calling method

Korean search results split between Google’s official documentation and instructions for obtaining an AI Studio key. This page covers what lies between them: calling through a compatible endpoint and the per-image prices across the family.

Search for the Nano Banana API in Korean and the results split in two: Google's official documentation or blog posts about “how to get a key in AI Studio.” What you actually need lies between those two. This article lays out how to make calls while keeping your existing OpenAI SDK and lists the per-image prices across the full model family in one table. No Google Cloud project is required.

Per-image prices — the full model family

The rates below are read from the model catalog, not hard-coded into the article. The table updates when prices change.

ModelPriceUse case
Nano Banana$0.0273General generation — a good default
Nano Banana 2$0.0469+Improved generation
Nano Banana Pro$0.067+For jobs where detail and text rendering matter
Nano Banana Edit$0.0273Edit part of an existing image

All prices are based on per image and are deducted from prepaid balance, not a subscription. There is no charge in months when you generate nothing.

Make a request — change only base_url and the model name

If you already use the OpenAI SDK, there is nothing new to learn. Just change two things in the client initialization: base_url and the model name.

generate.py
# 기존 OpenAI SDK를 그대로 씁니다. base_url과 모델 이름만 바뀝니다.
# Google Cloud 프로젝트도, 별도 SDK 설치도 필요 없습니다.
import os
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://api.kunavo.com/v1",
    api_key=os.environ["KUNAVO_API_KEY"],
)

img = client.images.generate(
    model="nano-banana-2",
    prompt="한옥 마당에 눈이 내리는 장면, 따뜻한 조명, 사진 스타일",
    n=1,
)
print(img.data[0].url)

The endpoint is POST /v1/images/generations, in the same format as OpenAI's image endpoint. So if you already have image generation integrated, you can switch by changing just the model name string.

First, check that your key works

Before changing your code, verify your key and endpoint with one request. Then, if an error occurs later, you can narrow down the cause to the code.

# 키가 되는지 30초 만에 확인하는 최소 요청
curl -sS https://api.kunavo.com/v1/images/generations \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer sk-kn-..." \
  -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"model":"nano-banana","prompt":"a paper crane on a desk","n":1}'

A 401 means an authentication issue, 429 means rate limiting, and 529 means upstream overload. The decision table in Claude Code Error Guide applies here as well.

Which tier should you use by default?

The most cost-effective approach is to use the base model by default and upgrade to Pro only for jobs where the results are insufficient. Since you only need to change one model name string, comparison testing costs virtually nothing — run the same prompt once on each tier and decide.

Video pricing is covered in Veo 3 Pricing, and the detailed English documentation is in Nano Banana API. Payment methods and registering domestic cards are covered in Claude API Pricing and Payments.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use the Nano Banana API?

There are two paths. Get a key from Google AI Studio and call it with Google's SDK, or use an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The latter works with an existing OpenAI SDK by changing only base_url and the model name, and does not require a Google Cloud project. The endpoint is POST /v1/images/generations, and you can choose the model name nano-banana, nano-banana-2, or nano-banana-pro.

How much does the Nano Banana API cost?

At Kunavo rates, Nano Banana is $0.0273, Nano Banana 2 is $0.0469+, and the higher-end model Nano Banana Pro is $0.067+ (per image). For image editing, Nano Banana Edit is $0.0273. This is pay-as-you-go from a prepaid balance, not a subscription, so months in which you generate nothing incur no cost.

What is the difference between Nano Banana and Nano Banana Pro?

They are tiers in the same family. The base model is sufficient for general generation, while Pro is the higher-end tier aimed at more demanding detail and text rendering, with a higher per-image price. In practice, the most cost-effective approach is to use the base model by default and reserve Pro for cases where the results are not good enough. Switching costs virtually nothing: just change the model name string.

Can I use it without an AI Studio key?

Yes. Through an OpenAI-compatible gateway, you can make calls with a single key and without a Google account, AI Studio key, or Google Cloud project. The trade-off is that you use shared capacity rather than a dedicated project quota, so if you need a guaranteed quota, apply directly with Google.

Can I edit images through the API?

Yes. Use the image-editing model Nano Banana Edit to send the original image with your instructions for targeted changes; its rate is $0.0273. Generation and editing use separate model names, so send a different model name to the same endpoint.

Can I pay with a Korean card?

Kunavo uses Stripe Checkout to top up your balance on a prepaid basis. When checkout is displayed in Korean won, domestic cards that block international payments and KakaoPay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, and Samsung Pay appear as options, and the KRW exchange rate includes a 2–4% conversion fee paid by the buyer (Stripe Adaptive Pricing documentation, checked 2026-10-03). Paying in dollars avoids this fee, but requires a card that supports international payments, such as Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, or UnionPay; if international payments are blocked, enable them in your card issuer's app. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link are also available. Toss Pay is not supported.
