Claude API Pricing and Payment 2026 — Complete Guide to Claude API Costs

We have gathered in one place what Korean developers most often look for about Claude API payments, costs, and pricing. Kunavo provides Claude at 30% below Anthropic's list price, depending on the model, and supports pay-as-you-go billing with top-ups from $10 using domestic cards, KakaoPay, Naver Pay, and more—the balance does not expire.

Claude is the standard for reasoning, coding, and agent tasks, and Kunavo provides Claude models through a single OpenAI-compatible API at rates 30% below Anthropic’s list price, depending on the model. claude-sonnet-5, previously offered at list price, is now about 30% below list price at $1.40 / $7.00 as of September 24, 2026. This guide brings together the topics Korean developers search for most often: Claude API payments, costs, and pricing — current rates by model, how to pay with a domestic card, cost calculations you can verify yourself, and ways to reduce your bill the most.

Claude API pricing at a glance

Rates are in USD per 1M tokens, as billed by Kunavo. The “Anthropic list price” column shows Anthropic’s published rate for the same model, so you can compare the difference directly. List prices are those published at claude.com/pricing and were verified on October 3, 2026. Kunavo rates are taken directly from the model catalog on this site to match actual charges.

ModelInput / 1MOutput / 1MAnthropic list price (input / output)Savings
claude-haiku-4-5$0.70$3.50$1.00 / $5.00~30%
claude-sonnet-4-6$2.10$10.50$3.00 / $15.00~30%
claude-opus-4-7$3.50$17.50$5.00 / $25.00~30%
claude-opus-5$3.50$17.50$5.00 / $25.00~30%
claude-opus-5-5$2.80$14.00$4.00 / $20.00~30%

You can always find live rates on the pricing page and each model page (claude-sonnet-4-6, claude-haiku-4-5, claude-opus-4-7, claude-opus-5-5). Haiku is the low-cost workhorse, Sonnet the balanced default, and Opus is for the most demanding reasoning.

Claude Opus 5.5 is now the best-value option. Anthropic announced the model on September 22, 2026, with list prices of $4.00 / $20.00 per 1M tokens — lower than Opus 5 at $5.00 / $25.00. Anthropic says it delivers Claude Fable 5.1-level performance on most tasks. On Kunavo, it costs $2.80 / $14.00, about 30% below list price. It costs more than Sonnet 5 ($1.40 / $7.00) but less than Opus 5 ($3.50 / $17.50) — the lowest rate among Kunavo’s Opus models. Cache reads cost 10% of the input rate, not 5% like most models, and adaptive thinking is always on, so allow for thinking tokens in your output budget. It is also the default model in Claude Code.

The existing Claude Opus 5 is priced at $3.50 / $17.50, with exactly the same rates as claude-opus-4-7 — when moving workloads from Opus 4.7, switching to Opus 5 requires changing just one word in the model name and incurs no additional cost, while switching to Opus 5.5 actually lowers the rates.

Claude API payment methods — local cards, KakaoPay?

Payments are processed by Stripe. There is no subscription or Anthropic Console billing setup. Top up your balance, then call the API; charges are deducted at the per-token rates above. Methods available to customers in South Korea:

  • Credit / debit cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB
  • When the payment screen is displayed in Korean won (₩): KakaoPay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, Samsung Pay, and domestic cards
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link (one-click payment)

Prices are denominated in US dollars (USD), and when paying from Korea, the payment screen displays a won amount. Pay as you use it from a minimum top-up of $10 USD; because this is a prepaid-wallet model, unused balances do not expire. When the payment screen is displayed in won, KakaoPay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, Samsung Pay, and domestic cards appear as options (won payments include Stripe's 2–4% currency-conversion fee—see Stripe information, checked October 3, 2026. Paying in dollars avoids this fee, but the card issuer may charge an international-payment fee). Toss Pay is not accepted. These methods are for topping up a Kunavo balance, not for claude.ai subscription payments. If you use a card to make an overseas payment, any block on overseas payments must be disabled in the card issuer's app. A table comparing claude.ai subscriptions, Anthropic Console, and Kunavo by payment method, along with top-up instructions, is available in Paying for Claude with KakaoPay.

Cost calculation examples

Actual figures calculated using Kunavo rates:

Even processing 10,000 customer inquiries per day with Haiku costs about $12.60/day. A calculation you can run yourself:

claude_cost.py
# Kunavo Claude 요율 (1M 토큰당 USD): (입력, 출력)
RATES = {
    "claude-haiku-4-5":  (0.70, 3.50),
    "claude-sonnet-4-6": (2.10, 10.50),
    "claude-opus-4-7":   (3.50, 17.50),
    "claude-opus-5":     (3.50, 17.50),
    "claude-opus-5-5":   (2.80, 14.00),
}

def cost(model: str, in_tokens: int, out_tokens: int) -> float:
    i, o = RATES[model]
    return in_tokens / 1_000_000 * i + out_tokens / 1_000_000 * o

print(cost("claude-haiku-4-5", 800, 200))      # 고객 문의 한 건 -> $0.00126
print(cost("claude-sonnet-4-6", 6_000, 500))   # RAG 답변 한 건  -> $0.0179
print(cost("claude-opus-4-7", 50_000, 2_000))  # 긴 컨텍스트 분석 -> $0.21
print(cost("claude-opus-5", 50_000, 2_000))    # Opus 5 분석     -> $0.21
print(cost("claude-opus-5-5", 50_000, 2_000))  # Opus 5.5 분석   -> $0.168

Korean consumes about 1.5–2 times as many tokens as English (about 0.5–0.7 tokens per character), so account for this when budgeting.

Prompt caching — the single biggest saving

If your system prompt or retrieved context is large and stable, prompt caching bills cached input at 10% of the input rate(Claude Opus 5.5에서는 5%, Claude Fable 5.1에서는 2.5%). Input costs can drop by 60–90% for long, repeated system prompts. Just add one field to the request — see the Anthropic prompt caching in-depth guide and the Messages API reference.

Claude, GPT, image, and video with one key

A single Kunavo key (sk-kn-…) calls Claude, GPT, image generation, video generation, and audio models — all in an OpenAI-compatible format and billed to one Stripe balance, with no need to reconcile separate invoices by provider. Claude is available through both the OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat/completions and native Anthropic Messages API (/v1/messages), so you can keep your existing SDK. For key creation steps, see the authentication documentation; for a side-by-side comparison of the official and gateway routes, see How to get a Claude API key. Rates for GPT models called with the same key are listed separately in GPT API pricing.

Code patterns for reducing costs through difficulty-based routing are in the AI cost optimization guide. For a comparison with OpenRouter, see Kunavo vs OpenRouter. If you get a 401, 429, or 529 during a call, Claude Code error guide explains how to identify which system the error comes from.

If you get stuck at the login or payment step while installing Claude Code, Install Claude Code covers both international payment blocks and key-based authentication workarounds. Per-image prices for image and video models called with the same key are listed in Nano Banana API and Veo 3 pricing.

Reducing Claude API costs

  1. Start with prompt caching. Cached input is billed at 10% of the input rate(Claude Opus 5.5에서는 5%, Claude Fable 5.1에서는 2.5%) — the highest-ROI saving.
  2. Use a lower tier. Send easy tasks to Haiku; reserve Opus for the hardest ones.
  3. Limit output. Set max_tokens — output costs about 5x as much as input.
  4. Reduce input. Retrieve fewer, more precise RAG chunks instead of the entire knowledge base.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pay for the Claude API?

Kunavo uses Stripe for payments. It accepts domestic and international credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB), Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link; when the payment screen is displayed in Korean won (₩), KakaoPay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, Samsung Pay, and domestic cards also appear as options (won payments include Stripe's 2–4% currency-conversion fee). Top up your balance from $10 and pay as you use it under a prepaid metered model. No Anthropic Console billing setup or separate contract is required, and balances do not expire. Toss Pay is not accepted, and these methods are for topping up a Kunavo balance, not for claude.ai subscription payments. You can start directly from Create a Kunavo account; a comparison by payment method is available in Paying for Claude with KakaoPay.

How much does the Claude API cost?

On Kunavo, Claude Sonnet 4.6 costs $2.10 per 1M input tokens and $10.50 per 1M output tokens, about 30% less than Anthropic’s list prices of $3.00 / $15.00. Haiku 4.5 is $0.70 / $3.50, and Opus 4.7 is $3.50 / $17.50. Failed requests are not charged.

How much does the Claude Opus 5 API cost?

Anthropic lists Claude Opus 5 at $5.00 input / $25.00 output per 1M tokens — flagship-level reasoning for nearly half the list price of Claude Fable 5. On Kunavo, it costs $3.50 / $17.50, about 30% less than Anthropic’s list price, with pay-as-you-go billing and no subscription. The rate is exactly the same as for the existing claude-opus-4-7, so upgrading requires changing just one word in the model name and costs nothing extra. Claude Opus 5.5, shown on September 22, 2026, is cheaper than Opus 5 at both Anthropic’s list prices ($4.00 / $20.00) and Kunavo’s rates ($2.80 / $14.00).

How much does the Claude Opus 5.5 API cost?

Anthropic’s list price for Claude Opus 5.5, announced on September 22, 2026, is $4.00 input / $20.00 output per 1M tokens, lower than Opus 5 ($5.00 / $25.00). On Kunavo, it costs $2.80 / $14.00, about 30% below list price. It costs more than Sonnet 5 ($1.40 / $7.00) using the same key, but less than Opus 5 ($3.50 / $17.50). Cache reads cost 5% of the input rate, and adaptive thinking is always on, so allow for thinking tokens in your output budget. It is also the default model in Claude Code, and its model ID is claude-opus-5-5.

Is the Claude API free?

Anthropic does not offer a free tier, so token charges begin with the first call. Kunavo is also pay-as-you-go, but you can start with a minimum $10 top-up; rates are 30% below Anthropic’s list price, depending on the model, and balances never expire. Claude Sonnet 5, which was previously offered at list price, has also been priced about 30% below list price since September 24, 2026, at $1.40 / $7.00.

How can I reduce Claude API costs?

Prompt caching has the biggest impact. Cached input is billed at 10% of the input rateIn (Claude Opus 5.5, In 5%, Claude Fable 5.1, 2.5%), so it can reduce input costs by 60–90% for long, repeated system prompts. Next, send easy tasks to Haiku and use Opus only for some difficult tasks; limit output with max_tokens (output costs about 5x as much as input); and reduce input by including fewer, more precise RAG chunks instead of the entire knowledge base.

How do payments and exchange rates work when using the Claude API in South Korea?

Kunavo works by preloading a balance through Stripe using a card or, on a won payment screen, KakaoPay, Naver Pay, and similar methods. Both rates and balances are denominated in US dollars (USD), the minimum top-up is $10, and there is no subscription or monthly flat fee. API call costs are deducted from the prepaid USD balance at per-token rates, so exchange rates are not applied on every call; they apply only to the payment used to top up the balance. Stripe displays a won amount on the payment screen; paying in won includes Stripe's 2–4% currency-conversion fee, while paying in dollars may incur an international-payment fee from the card issuer.

Is Kunavo compatible with the OpenAI SDK?

Yes. Change base_url to https://api.kunavo.com/v1 and enter your Kunavo key; your existing OpenAI SDK code will work as is. Claude can be called through both the OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat/completions endpoint and the native Anthropic Messages API (/v1/messages). The same key also works for GPT and image and video models.

Does Kunavo support the Anthropic Messages API?

Yes — Claude is available through both the native Messages API (/v1/messages) and the OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat/completions, so you can use either SDK as is. For on-the-ground guidance on latency and local payments in Seoul, see the South Korea Claude API quickstart.
