Windsurf vs Cursor: current workflows, prices, and API options

Windsurf vs Cursor is now a comparison between Devin Desktop, the renamed Windsurf IDE, and Cursor. New individual Pro plans both list $20 per month. Shortlist Devin Desktop if its Agent Command Center and external-agent workflow fit your work; shortlist Cursor if you want its editing, Tab, and agent tools together. Decide on workflow and total usage cost rather than an outdated $15-versus-$20 headline.

Cognition announced Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026. The Windsurf editor remains underneath the new agent-management experience. Existing accounts retain their terms according to the migration FAQ; this comparison does not assume every older subscriber has moved to a new plan.

Choose around the work you want to keep doing

Try Devin Desktop when managing several agents is the attraction. Its launch announcement describes local and cloud agents, shared context through Spaces, and a full IDE for editing and review. That is a concrete reason to evaluate it if you move between delegated work and hands-on code changes.

Try Cursor when its integrated workflow already fits your day. Its current plans include agent work, cloud agents, and customization through MCP, skills, and hooks. Keep Tab completion in the evaluation: an agent that creates a good patch does not automatically replace the editing assistance you use between tasks. Cursor also offers a CLI, so terminal access alone is not a reason to rule it out.

If your main goal is choosing the provider while keeping your current editor, expand the shortlist to Cline vs Cursor. A different billing route may solve that need without another IDE migration.

Equal subscription prices can produce different bills

The Devin billing guide gives Pro daily and weekly allowances, with Max using a larger weekly allowance and no daily cap. Cursor's usage guide describes monthly pools that reset with the billing cycle. A developer who works in short bursts should compare when capacity is available, not just the monthly fee.

For example, a $20 subscription plus $12 of charged extra usage totals $32 before tax. A second $20 subscription kept alongside it makes the total $52. These are budget arithmetic examples, not predicted workloads. Count all retained plans and provider charges when evaluating a switch; the same model can consume different amounts of context in different agents.

Cursor's on-demand usage must be enabled explicitly and has separate invoices. Devin offers purchased extra capacity after quota. Neither subscription price is a promise of unlimited frontier-model work. If you are diagnosing a limit you have already reached, use the Cursor usage-limits guide.

BYOK, custom endpoints, and external agents are different choices

Cursor BYOK supports specified chat models from providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure, and Bedrock. Individual paid plans bill those model requests through the provider without drawing down included usage. Teams and Enterprise still apply the Cursor Token Rate. Tab continues to use Cursor's own models.

Cursor's data-governance documentation also recognizes OpenAI-compatible base URL overrides and gateways. That establishes a custom-endpoint path; it does not establish that every model, agent feature, or Kunavo route works through it. Choose a configuration documented for the specific client and model you intend to use.

Devin Desktop documents ACP agents, including OpenCode, for Pro, Max, and Teams users. The external agent handles its own operations and billing. ACP connects an editor to an agent; it is not a base URL setting that replaces the built-in agent or Tab model. For Kunavo, configure OpenCode using the supported provider guide. Treat embedding that agent in Devin Desktop as a separate setup step.

Run a small migration trial

1. Choose a real task with a passing test or another clear acceptance condition.
2. Use separate branches from the same commit and copy project instructions deliberately.
3. Compare context selection, terminal approvals, review flow, and completion behavior.
4. Record the full charge and review time; keep the tool that fits your recurring work.

Start: the same clean commit in each editor
Task: fix one reproducible bug and add a regression test
Keep: the same model where available and the same acceptance criteria
Record: plan, agent, model, quota used, extra charges, review time
Accept: a reviewed diff with the relevant tests passing

For a separate API-billed agent, compare Cline provider prices or follow the OpenCode setup. Create a Kunavo account once you have chosen that client route. Buying API credit funds its model usage; it does not buy either editor's subscription.
