Pay for Claude with Google Pay: claude.ai, the Android app and the API

Google Pay, Google Play billing and the card checkout on claude.ai are three separate checkouts. This page sorts out which one bills each kind of Claude purchase. It then shows how Google Pay tops up a Kunavo balance for the Claude API and Claude Code, and what to do when the button is missing or a payment is declined.

Last reviewed on .

On claude.ai, Anthropic accepts only credit or debit cards, and a Claude plan bought in the Android app is billed by Google Play, not through a Google Pay button (Anthropic help center, read October 3, 2026). Where Google Pay does work is the Claude API and Claude Code on an API key: Kunavo, an independent API gateway, offers Google Pay at its Stripe checkout in Chrome and on Android when a card is saved to your Google account, from $10. That tops up a prepaid API balance. It does not buy Claude Pro or Max. Prices and payment methods were checked on October 3, 2026.

Short answer: can you pay for Claude with Google Pay?

Three different checkouts take money for Claude, and Google Pay belongs to only one of them:

  • Claude Pro or Max on claude.ai (web): no Google Pay. Anthropic's paid-plan billing FAQ limits subscriptions bought on the web to credit and debit cards (read October 3, 2026). Google Pay is not on that list, and Anthropic's card-decline article says it does not take third-party payment processors such as PayPal or Venmo.
  • Claude Pro or Max in the Claude Android app: Google Play. The same FAQ says a subscription bought in Claude for Android is handled by Google Play, and you manage the payment method and receipts in your store account. Play charges the cards on your Google account or another method Play supports in your country. That is Google Play billing, a different checkout from Google Pay.
  • Claude API and Claude Code on an API key: Google Pay works through Kunavo. Anthropic's own Console takes API prepayments by card. Kunavo's Stripe checkout shows a Google Pay button to Chrome and Android buyers with Google Pay set up, and the balance it tops up pays per token for Claude and GPT models. Most of this page covers that route.

Claude Pro in the Android app: Google Play billing, not Google Pay

When you subscribe inside Claude for Android, the purchase screen is Google Play's, not Anthropic's, and not a Google Pay button on a website. The two do share your cards: Stripe's Google Pay docs say Google Pay can use any credit or debit card saved to your Google account, including cards added through Google Play, YouTube, Chrome or an Android device (read October 3, 2026). So the same card can pay for a Play subscription and for a Google Pay checkout, through two different checkouts with different refund rules.

  • Payment methods. Google Play's payment methods page says they vary by country. Its US list has cards (American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, Visa), Google Pay balance, Google Play balance and gift cards, Cash App Pay, PayPal and Venmo. For countries not on its list it names credit or debit cards (American Express, Discover, Mastercard, Visa). Play cannot be used with virtual credit cards, wire transfers or escrow payments. Neither Google nor Anthropic says which of these the Claude app's purchase sheet shows in your country, so check the sheet before you confirm.
  • Price. Anthropic's help center gives no in-app price. Compare the amount on the Play purchase sheet with the price Anthropic lists for the web plan before you subscribe.
  • Cancelling. Anthropic's cancellation article says to tap your initials in Claude for Android, then Billing, then Manage subscription, or to cancel in Google Play, at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge.
  • Refunds. Google Play's in-app refund page says that within 48 hours of a purchase you can request a refund from Google Play, which usually decides within a day but can take up to four days; after 48 hours, you contact the app's developer. Anthropic's refund article says its support team checks eligibility first, and for an inactive subscription asks for your Google Play account email or the GPA order number on your Google Play receipt (GPA.xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxx).

Kunavo is not part of that route. Nothing on Kunavo pays for, upgrades or refunds a Claude plan bought in Google Play.

Google Pay for the Claude API, through Kunavo

What a Google Pay payment buys here is a prepaid Kunavo balance. The key it funds accepts both OpenAI-style and Anthropic-style requests, so the same balance pays for Claude and GPT models by the token. Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1.40 per 1M input tokens and $7.00 per 1M output tokens (Anthropic charges $2.00 and $10.00); Claude Haiku 4.5 costs $0.70 and $3.50. Nothing renews each month, an unspent balance stays on the account indefinitely, and a request that fails with a 4xx or 5xx error costs nothing. Anthropic's own Console credits, by comparison, expire one year after purchase and cannot be refunded (Anthropic, read October 3, 2026).

How Google Pay appears at Kunavo's checkout

Top-ups go through Stripe Checkout, and Kunavo leaves the list of methods to Stripe, so Google Pay appears when your device and browser qualify (conditions below). It shows as its own button rather than one option among the others: Stripe's wallet docs say Checkout moves Google Pay into a row of payment methods only when the merchant asks for terms-of-service consent, custom fields or tax ID collection, which Kunavo's checkout does not, or when the buyer's IP address is in Finland or Sweden and non-card methods are also offered. Buyers there may find Google Pay in that row instead.

Pressing the button opens Google Pay, where you pick one of the cards on your Google account and confirm the payment with your Google Pay account (Stripe). The card is charged like any card payment. Stripe's docs distinguish how the card is stored: one added to the Google Pay app on a phone is saved as a device token, while one added in Chrome or a Google property such as YouTube or Play is saved as the card number itself, and 3D Secure can be used on those, so your bank's confirmation step may appear. “Offered at checkout” means Stripe presents Google Pay on Kunavo’s account when your device and browser qualify; it is not a claim that a top-up has been paid with it here yet.

Amounts

The minimum top-up is $10. Larger top-ups carry a bonus, and a Google Pay payment earns the same bonus as typing the card in by hand:

You payBonusBalance credited
$10None$10
$100+$10$110
$1,000+$200$1,200
$5,000+$1,250$6,250

Which currency you pay in

Prices are set in US dollars. Outside the US, Stripe's Adaptive Pricing may show the amount in your local currency, and its exchange rate includes a 2–4% conversion fee that the buyer pays. You can choose to pay in US dollars instead, which avoids that fee, though your card issuer's own exchange rate and fees may apply. Stripe holds the rate for 24 hours, and a refund uses the same rate as the original payment (Stripe, read October 3, 2026). Because Google Pay charges the card behind it, that card's rules apply: if your bank blocks online or foreign-currency payments, Google Pay will not get around it.

How to pay with Google Pay, step by step

1. Create an account

Sign up with email or with Google. Signing in with Google does not connect Google Pay or save a card: the wallet only comes in at checkout, and creating the account needs no payment details.

2. Open Billing and choose an amount

Open Billing from the dashboard and choose one of the amounts in the table above. Do this in Chrome on a computer or in the browser on your Android phone, and in a normal window, because an incognito window hides the Google Pay button.

3. Press the Google Pay button

The Stripe checkout shows the amount, in US dollars or your local currency. Check the total, then press Google Pay. If there is no button, go to the checklist in the next section; the card form and Link are on the same page.

4. Confirm in Google Pay

Pick the card you want to charge and confirm. If your bank asks for a 3D Secure check, finish it in the bank's app or with the code it sends.

5. Wait for the balance

A Google Pay payment settles like a card payment, so there is no multi-day wait of the kind bank debits have. Kunavo adds the money once Stripe reports the payment as paid, normally a few seconds after you confirm. Look at Billing before you try again: if the first payment did go through, a second one is simply another top-up.

6. Create a key and make the first call

Go to /app/keys and create a key (it begins with sk-kn-). The full key is displayed one time only, so store it before you close the dialog. A first request to confirm the balance is live:

terminal
# After the top-up is credited, this is the first call.
curl https://api.kunavo.com/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KUNAVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "claude-sonnet-5",
"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "One line: did the Google Pay top-up work?"}]
  }'

7. Point Claude Code at the key

terminal
# Claude Code on the same key and the same balance
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com # the origin, no /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
claude

Leave /v1 off ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, since Claude Code adds the path itself, and set ANTHROPIC_MODEL so it stays on a model this key serves. Other settings are in the Claude Code integration docs, and the Claude token cost calculator estimates how far a top-up will go.

Google Pay button missing? Check these

Stripe's wallet troubleshooting page (Checkout Sessions, read October 3, 2026) lists what has to be true for the Google Pay button to appear:

  • A card in your Google wallet. The wallet must hold at least one card. Stripe's Google Pay draws on credit or debit cards saved to your Google account, so a Google Play balance or gift card will not make the button appear.
  • A compatible device and browser. A supported version of a supported browser on a device Google Pay works on.
  • Chrome allowed to check. In Chrome, go to Settings > Autofill and passwords > Payment methods and turn on “Allow sites to check if you have payment methods saved”. Stripe lists the same switch in Edge (Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services) and in Opera (Settings > Advanced > Payment methods).
  • No incognito or private window. Stripe does not show the button there.
  • A supported region. You have to be in a supported Google Pay region.
  • Not India. Stripe does not display Google Pay in live mode for IP addresses in India (Stripe's Google Pay docs). A VPN that exits in India hides it too, since the check goes by IP address. Buyers in India pay with UPI, which is offered when the checkout is shown in rupees and which you can approve in the GPay app. That GPay app is a UPI app, not the card wallet this page is about.

If the button still does not appear, nothing is lost: type the same card into the card form on the same page, or use Link. It is the same card charge with the same bonus, without the wallet.

If a Google Pay payment is declined

Google Pay Help says Google does not hold or process your funds: the transaction is between the merchant and the bank that issued your card, and the bank, not Google, knows why it was declined (read October 3, 2026). Google's checklist:

  • Make sure the merchant accepts your payment method.
  • Check for alerts on your Google payments account at payments.google.com.
  • Make sure your billing information matches your Google payments profile settings.
  • Try a different payment method.
  • Remove the card from Google Wallet, add it again, and retry.
  • Ask your bank for the reason; it knows, and Google does not.

Because the bank makes the call, typing the same card into the card form is unlikely to change the answer. A different card or Link is the quicker fallback.

Refunds for a Google Pay top-up

  • Who refunds it. For a purchase made with Google Pay on a non-Google website, Google Pay Help says to contact the merchant, and that a refund appears on the statement of the linked payment method. For a Kunavo top-up, the merchant is Kunavo.
  • Kunavo's policy. Refunds are case by case through support@kunavo.com, for example an accidental double top-up, an outage on Kunavo's side or a pricing bug (billing docs). They are paid as wallet credit by default, or back through Stripe on request. The terms (section 2) add two rules: a top-up that API usage has already spent cannot be refunded, and closing the account returns the unused balance to the original payment method, less payment processor fees. For a Google Pay top-up, that is the card you picked in the Google Pay sheet.
  • How Stripe handles it. A Google Pay payment can be refunded in full or in part, by the same process as a card refund (Stripe). If you paid in local currency, the refund uses the original exchange rate (Stripe).

For comparison, Anthropic says Console API credits are non-refundable.

What Google Pay does not do here

  • It does not pay for Claude Pro or Max, a Google Play subscription, Anthropic Console credits or ChatGPT Plus. It tops up a Kunavo API balance.
  • It does not spend a Google Play balance or gift card. Google Pay at a Stripe checkout charges a credit or debit card.
  • It does not set up auto-recharge. Auto-recharge needs a saved card or Link, and a one-off Google Pay top-up does not save the card.
  • PayPal and Venmo are not offered at Kunavo's checkout, and Anthropic does not take them either.

Other ways to pay

Apple Pay works the same way in Safari and on iPhone; see paying for Claude with Apple Pay. The full list of methods by country is in paying for the Claude API without a credit card. Rail-by-rail guides: UPI (India), Pix (Brazil), Satispay (Italy), paying without a bank card (France and Belgium), Alipay and WeChat Pay (mainland China) and crypto. Per-model rates are in the Claude API pricing guide.

FAQ

Can I pay for Claude Pro with Google Pay?

Not on claude.ai on the web: Anthropic's billing FAQ says subscriptions bought on the web take credit or debit cards only (read October 3, 2026). A Claude Pro or Max plan bought in the Claude Android app is billed by Google Play, which charges the cards saved to your Google account and the other Play payment methods your country supports. Google Pay at Kunavo's checkout pays for Claude API usage and Claude Code on an API key, not for a Claude Pro or Max plan.

Is Google Play billing the same as Google Pay?

No. Google Play billing is the Play Store's own checkout for apps and subscriptions, and it is how the Claude Android app charges for Pro and Max. Google Pay is a wallet button that websites and apps show at their own checkout. Both can draw on the same cards: Stripe's Google Pay docs say it uses any credit or debit card saved to your Google account, including cards added through Google Play, YouTube, Chrome or an Android device.

Why doesn't Google Pay show up at checkout?

Stripe's wallet troubleshooting page lists the conditions: your Google wallet must hold at least one card, you need a compatible device and a supported browser version, Chrome must be allowed to check for saved payment methods (Settings > Autofill and passwords > Payment methods), you cannot be in an incognito or private window, and you must be in a supported Google Pay region. Stripe does not display Google Pay in live mode to IP addresses in India. If none of that fixes it, type the same card into the card form or use Link.

Can I use Google Pay from India?

Not at a Stripe checkout: Stripe's docs say Google Pay does not display in live mode for users with IP addresses in India. On Kunavo, a checkout shown in rupees offers UPI instead, and you can approve a UPI payment in the GPay app.

Does paying with Google Pay cost more than paying by card on Kunavo?

No. Kunavo adds no surcharge for any payment method, and the top-up bonus is the same. If Stripe shows the checkout in your local currency, its exchange rate includes a 2–4% conversion fee, whatever method you pick. Choosing US dollars avoids that fee, though your card issuer's own foreign-exchange fee may apply.

Can I use my Google Play balance or a gift card?

Not at Kunavo. Google Pay at a Stripe checkout charges a credit or debit card saved to your Google account. Google Play balance and gift cards are spent inside Google Play, for example on a Claude subscription bought in the Android app, where Play offers them.

How do I get a refund for a Google Pay top-up?

Email support@kunavo.com. Kunavo refunds case by case, for example an accidental double top-up, and pays refunds as wallet credit by default or back through Stripe on request. Stripe refunds a Google Pay payment the same way as a card payment, and Google Pay Help says the refund appears on the statement of the linked card. For purchases from merchants other than Google, Google Pay Help sends refund requests to the merchant.

How do I get a refund for Claude Pro bought in the Android app?

Within 48 hours of the purchase, request it through Google Play. After that, Google Play's help says to contact the app's developer. For Claude that is Anthropic support, which checks eligibility; for an inactive subscription it asks for your Google Play account email or the GPA order number on your Google Play receipt (GPA.xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxx).
