Pay for Claude with Apple Pay: the iPhone app, claude.ai and the API

Apple Pay reaches Claude through two different bills. In the iPhone app, Apple bills Claude Pro and Max as an in-app purchase, while on claude.ai Anthropic takes cards. This page covers both, how to cancel or get a refund through Apple, and how to pay for the Claude API with Apple Pay.

Last reviewed on .

You can pay for Claude with Apple Pay in two places: inside the Claude app for iPhone, where Apple bills the subscription, and at Kunavo's checkout for the Claude API. A Claude Pro or Max plan bought in the app is an Apple In-App Purchase, so the App Store charges whatever your Apple Account pays with, and in the United States that includes Apple Pay. On claude.ai in a browser, Anthropic lists credit or debit cards only. The Claude API, and Claude Code on an API key, can be paid with Apple Pay through Kunavo, an independent API gateway whose Stripe checkout offers it in Safari and on iPhone, from $10. That last route tops up a prepaid API balance. It does not buy a Pro or Max plan. Sources and prices were checked on October 3, 2026.

Short answer: can you pay for Claude with Apple Pay?

It depends on which Claude bill you mean. They are billed separately, and Apple Pay plays a different part in each:

Where you payWho bills youApple Pay?What you get
Claude app for iPhone or iPad (In-App Purchase)Apple, through the App StoreYes, if it is on your Apple Account. In the US, Apple lists Apple Pay, most credit and debit cards, Apple Card, Apple Cash, Apple Account balance and PayPalClaude Pro or Max, renewing through Apple
claude.ai in a browserAnthropicNot listed: Anthropic takes credit or debit cards for web plansClaude Pro or Max, renewing with Anthropic
Claude API or Claude Code on an API key, through KunavoKunavo, through Stripe CheckoutOffered at checkout (Safari and iOS buyers)A prepaid per-token balance from $10; nothing renews
  • In the app. Anthropic's iOS sign-up article says you tap your initials, open settings, tap Upgrade to Pro and complete the in-app purchase. Its billing FAQ says that for subscriptions bought in Claude for iOS, the Apple App Store determines the payment options. Apple's Apple Account payment methods page lists Apple Pay for the US and notes that Apple Pay requires two-factor authentication on the account (all read October 3, 2026). This is Apple's billing, not Apple Pay taken by the app itself: Stripe's Apple Pay docs say an iOS app can take Apple Pay directly for digital products, content or subscriptions only in the US and the EEA, by sending the buyer to an outside payment page, and can't in other regions.
  • On the web. The same billing FAQ says “For subscriptions purchased on the web, we only accept credit or debit cards.” It does not mention Apple Pay. We have not checked whether claude.ai's checkout shows an Apple Pay button in Safari, so this page makes no claim either way.
  • For the API. Kunavo sells the Claude API and Claude Code on a key from a prepaid balance, and its Stripe checkout offers Apple Pay. The rest of this page covers that route, after the App Store details that people paying through Apple ask about most.

App Store price vs claude.ai price for the same plan

The App Store sells Claude plans at its own prices. On the US App Store listing for the Claude app (seller Anthropic PBC), read on October 3, 2026, the in-app purchases are these, next to what claude.com/pricing showed the same day:

PlanUS App Store (Apple bills)claude.ai on the web (Anthropic bills)
Claude Pro, monthly$20.00$20 billed monthly
Claude Pro, annual$214.99$200 billed up front ($17 a month)
Claude Max 5x, monthly$124.99Max from $100 a month
Claude Max 20x, monthly$249.99Not recorded in our check (the page lists Max from $100 a month)

Only the US storefront was read, so App Store prices in other countries are not shown here. Subscribing in the app has one more effect: Anthropic's usage-credits article says that if you subscribed through one of the Claude mobile apps, you can enable usage credits only on the web version of Claude (read October 3, 2026).

Cancel or refund a Claude subscription billed by Apple

You can cancel it in two places:

  • In the Claude app: tap your initials in the top right, then Billing, then Manage subscription (Anthropic's cancel article).
  • In iPhone Settings: tap your name, then Subscriptions, then the Claude subscription, then Cancel Subscription (Apple's cancel steps). Anthropic points to Apple's route if you have already deleted the app.

Anthropic says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. For a refund, Anthropic's refund article says only Apple can refund a Claude plan bought in the iOS app. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose “I'd like to”, then “Request a refund”. Apple says to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update, and approved money can take longer to come back (Apple's refund steps). One thing to know before you ask: a refund does not end the plan. Anthropic writes that requesting a refund doesn't cancel your subscription, so cancel it too if you do not want the next charge (all read October 3, 2026). Kunavo has no part in any of this and cannot see, cancel or refund an App Store subscription.

Paying for the Claude API with Apple Pay on Kunavo

Kunavo sells pay-per-token access to the Claude and GPT models through one API key and a prepaid balance. Claude Sonnet 5 costs $1.40 per 1M input tokens and $7.00 per 1M output tokens (Anthropic charges $2.00 and $10.00). The minimum top-up is $10, and larger top-ups carry a bonus: pay $100, get $110; pay $1,000, get $1,200; pay $5,000, get $6,250. There is no monthly fee, the balance never expires, and failed requests are not billed. Claude Code on an API key draws on the same balance.

Top-ups go through Stripe's hosted Checkout page. Apple Pay is a wallet for cards stored on an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch. On hosted Checkout it works with no additional configuration on the merchant's side, and Stripe does not show it when the device and integration requirements are not met (Stripe's Apple Pay docs, read October 3, 2026). Choosing it charges a card from your Wallet.

Step by step

  1. Create a Kunavo account with an email address or a Google account. No card is asked for at sign-up.
  2. Open Billing and choose an amount, from $10.
  3. Stripe Checkout opens. In Safari on a Mac, or on an iPhone or iPad, Apple Pay is offered next to card and Link when your device qualifies. Check the currency shown before you pay (see the next section).
  4. Choose Apple Pay, pick a card in the Apple Pay sheet, and confirm the payment on your device, for example with Face ID or Touch ID.
  5. An Apple Pay payment confirms like a card payment, so the balance usually appears within seconds of the tick in the Apple Pay sheet. If it has not, reload Billing rather than approving Apple Pay a second time: a second approval is a second top-up, not a retry of the first.
  6. Create a key at /app/keys. The full sk-kn- key is displayed only when it is created, so save it somewhere before the dialog closes. Then point Claude Code at it:
terminal
# Claude Code on the key you just paid for with Apple Pay
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com # the origin, no /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
claude

Leave /v1 off ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, because Claude Code adds the path itself, and keep ANTHROPIC_MODEL set so Claude Code stays on a model the key serves. Other clients, and the OpenAI-format endpoint at https://api.kunavo.com/v1, are in the Claude Code setup docs and the quickstart.

Currency, conversion and your card's own rules

Kunavo prices are in US dollars, but outside the US the top-up may be presented in your own currency through Stripe's Adaptive Pricing, whose rate carries a 2–4% conversion fee paid by the buyer. Settle the currency on the checkout page before you press the Apple Pay button: the amount and currency in the Apple Pay sheet are what you approve with Face ID or Touch ID. Where the page offers US dollars, picking them skips Stripe's fee.

Apple Pay is a card underneath. The bank that issued the card in your Wallet approves or declines the charge, and if it treats the purchase as foreign, its own foreign-transaction fee can apply on top. Apple Pay does not change the card's rules, and neither does Kunavo.

If Apple Pay does not appear at checkout

Stripe's Apple Pay docs say that if the device and integration requirements are not met, Stripe does not show Apple Pay as an option at all. Its wallet testing docs list what has to be true (both read October 3, 2026):

  • A card in Wallet. The wallet must hold at least one card. Add one in the Wallet app, then reload the checkout.
  • Safari. Apple says Apple Pay works in other browsers only by scanning a code with an iPhone or iPad on iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later, with participating merchants, and not in every market (Apple). We have not confirmed that Kunavo's checkout shows that code in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, so open Kunavo in Safari and start the top-up from Billing there, or pay with a card or Link. On Android or in Chrome, Google Pay is offered at checkout to Chrome and Android buyers with Google Pay set up; see paying for Claude with Google Pay.
  • Not a private window. Stripe says not to use a Safari private window (or a Chrome incognito one).
  • Safari's Apple Pay check turned on. On a Mac, the setting is in Safari, Settings, Advanced: “Allow websites to check for Apple Pay and Apple card” (Stripe's wording).
  • A device with Face ID or Touch ID. Stripe's list includes a device with biometric authentication.
  • A supported location. Apple Pay has to be available where you are (Apple's country list). India is the exception that catches people: Apple lists India, but Stripe does not display Apple Pay to IP addresses in India in any mode. If you are paying from India, use UPI instead, covered in paying for Claude with UPI.
  • Not an in-app browser. If you opened Kunavo from a link inside Slack, X, Gmail or another app, we have not checked whether the button appears there. Open the page in Safari.

One cause you may read about elsewhere does not apply here: a domain not registered for Apple Pay. Stripe requires that registration for its embedded payment forms; for hosted Checkout, which Kunavo uses, Apple Pay works with no additional configuration (Stripe). A checkout page stays open for an hour. After that, start a new top-up from Billing.

If Apple Pay fails or is declined

A declined Apple Pay payment is a decision by the bank behind the card you picked, not by Apple or Kunavo. Try another card in your Wallet, type a card in directly on the checkout page, or pay with Link. If your bank keeps declining, ask it why; it is the only party that knows. If the problem is that you have no card your bank will let you use, Apple Pay cannot help, because it charges a card. The routes that need no card at all, country by country, are in paying for the Claude API without a credit card, including crypto in US-dollar checkouts.

Refunds for an Apple Pay top-up

Kunavo's terms (section 2) say a top-up cannot be refunded once API usage has consumed it, and closing the account refunds the unused balance to the original payment method, less payment processor fees. Other refunds, such as an accidental double top-up, are handled case by case through support@kunavo.com under the billing policy: as wallet credit by default, or back through Stripe on request. When a refund goes back through Stripe, an Apple Pay payment can be refunded fully or in part the same way as a card payment, to the card behind it, and a dispute follows the card dispute process (Stripe's Apple Pay refund docs, read October 3, 2026).

What Apple Pay on Kunavo does not pay for

  • Claude Pro, Max or the App Store subscription. A Kunavo balance pays for API tokens only. It cannot pay for a claude.ai plan, an Apple-billed plan or Anthropic's usage credits.
  • Auto-recharge. Auto-recharge charges a card or a Link account saved for it. Treat Apple Pay top-ups as manual.
  • PayPal. A US Apple Account can pay the in-app Claude subscription with PayPal, but Kunavo's checkout does not offer PayPal.
  • Tax paperwork. Kunavo does not issue VAT invoices for any country. Your records are the top-up list in Billing and the charge on the statement of the card you picked in the Apple Pay sheet.

FAQ

Can I pay for Claude Pro with Apple Pay?

In the Claude iPhone app, yes, if Apple Pay is on your Apple Account: a plan bought in the app is an App Store in-app purchase, Anthropic says the App Store decides the payment options, and Apple lists Apple Pay among Apple Account payment methods in the US. On claude.ai on the web, Anthropic's billing FAQ says it accepts credit or debit cards only and does not mention Apple Pay (both read October 3, 2026).

Why is Claude more expensive in the iPhone app?

It is the same plan sold at the App Store's own price. On the US App Store on October 3, 2026, Claude Pro annual was $214.99 against $200 on claude.com/pricing, and Claude Max 5x was $124.99 a month against Max from $100 a month on the web. Claude Pro monthly was $20 in both places. App Store prices in other countries were not checked.

How do I cancel a Claude subscription I bought through Apple?

In the Claude app, tap your initials, then Billing, then Manage subscription. Or in iPhone Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then the Claude subscription, then Cancel Subscription; use this route if you have deleted the app. Anthropic says to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date.

Can Anthropic refund a Claude subscription billed by Apple?

No. Anthropic's help center says only Apple can refund Claude plans bought in the iOS app. Request it at reportaproblem.apple.com (choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund"); Apple says to expect an update within 24 to 48 hours. A refund does not cancel the subscription, so cancel it as well if you do not want the next charge.

Can I pay for the Claude API with Apple Pay?

Yes, through Kunavo: its Stripe checkout offers Apple Pay in Safari and on iPhone and iPad, from a $10 top-up. The money goes into a prepaid balance that pays per token for the Claude API and for Claude Code on an API key. It does not buy Claude Pro or Max.

Why doesn't Apple Pay show up at checkout?

Stripe says it does not show Apple Pay when device and integration requirements are not met. Its checklist includes at least one card in the wallet, a compatible device and a supported browser, Safari's "Allow websites to check for Apple Pay and Apple card" setting, no private window, a supported Apple Pay region, and a device with biometric authentication; for IP addresses in India, Stripe doesn't display Apple Pay in any mode. In browsers other than Safari, Apple says Apple Pay works by scanning a code with an iPhone or iPad on iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later, with participating merchants. We have not confirmed that Kunavo's checkout shows that code, so open the page in Safari or pay with a card or Link.

Can I use Apple Pay for auto-recharge on Kunavo?

Paying a top-up with Apple Pay does not turn auto-recharge on. Auto-recharge charges a card or a Link account saved for it on a separate setup page; we have not checked whether that page offers Apple Pay. Until you save a payment method there, each Apple Pay top-up is made by hand.

How is an Apple Pay top-up refunded?

Kunavo's terms say a top-up cannot be refunded once API usage has consumed it, and closing the account refunds the unused balance to the original payment method, less payment processor fees. Other refunds, such as an accidental double top-up, are handled case by case through support@kunavo.com. A refund through Stripe goes back the same way as a card refund, to the card behind Apple Pay.
