Claude card declined? Why Anthropic rejects cards and how to pay anyway

Anthropic gets no decline reason from your bank. Here is its own checklist, the questions that get the bank to explain, what a failed Claude Pro renewal does, and how to keep the Claude API and Claude Code running on a local payment method when no card works.

Last reviewed on .

When Claude declines your card or says your payment failed, Anthropic does not know the exact reason either: its help center says the bank that issued the card does not send it one. Anthropic's own checklist comes down to six things you can fix (a billing country it supports, a billing address that matches your bank's records, a finished 3D Secure check, a credit or debit card rather than PayPal, enough funds, another try later) and a seventh: ask your bank. If no card you have gets through, the Claude API and Claude Code can run on a prepaid Kunavo balance that you top up with a local method instead, such as Cash App Pay, ACH, UPI, Pix, iDEAL or KakaoPay, from $10. That balance pays for API tokens only, never for Claude Pro or Max. Every outside source on this page was read on October 10, 2026.

Anthropic's checklist for a declined card

Anthropic's help-center article “Why was my card declined?” lists seven things to try, in this order. Here is what each one means while you are looking at the error:

  1. A supported billing location. The billing address on your card and the country the card comes from must be on Anthropic's list of supported countries, and the address must match that country. Anthropic serves only the countries on that list, so if yours is missing, a different card will not change the answer.
  2. The address your bank has. Type the billing address exactly as your bank holds it. Anthropic warns that even a missing accent mark or a misspelled street name can trigger a decline.
  3. 3D Secure, finished. If the payment asks for 3D Secure, complete it: enter the one-time password sent to your phone, or confirm the payment in your bank's app or website.
  4. A method Anthropic takes. Credit and debit cards, for every purchase; ACH bank transfers only for self-serve Enterprise plans and API accounts on monthly invoicing. Third-party processors such as PayPal or Venmo are not accepted, and Anthropic says a payment made with an unsupported method will likely be declined.
  5. Enough funds. The card has to cover the whole amount. If you are not sure what is available, Anthropic suggests asking your bank.
  6. Another try. Use another payment method if you have one, or try again later: temporary technical problems and network disruptions can cause declines that clear by themselves.
  7. Your bank. Ask the bank that issued the card why it declined the payment. Anthropic's article says it may be able to tell you more.

If all seven check out and the payment still fails, the article ends by pointing you to Anthropic's support team.

What to ask your bank

Because Anthropic never sees the reason, the call to your bank is where a decline gets explained. OpenAI's help center, describing the same problem on its side, notes that some banks block certain online or international transactions by default. These questions get to the answer quickly:

  • Did you decline a payment to Anthropic, and for what reason?
  • Is this card allowed to pay online, and to pay merchants in other countries?
  • Was a 3D Secure code or an app approval sent for the payment, and did it go through?
  • Does the billing address I typed match the one you have on file?
  • If the payment was stopped as suspected fraud, can you clear it so I can try again?

If the bank cannot or will not let the card pay, two ways remain: the app stores for the subscription, and a top-up with a local method for the API. Both are below.

When the failed payment is a Claude Pro or Max renewal

Anthropic's billing FAQ says that when your payment method fails, the account is downgraded, so a paid plan that suddenly shows as free can be a failed payment (the other cause it names is signing in with a different email). On claude.ai, open Settings > Billing to see the recent payment status, then use Update next to your payment method to enter another card. The new card is charged when the subscription next renews.

If you subscribed in the Claude app for iOS or Android, the App Store or Google Play takes the payment, and the card is changed in your store account, not on claude.ai. Subscriptions bought on the web take credit or debit cards only, so if any route to Claude Pro or Max works without a card, it is the app store's, with whatever methods your store account offers.

On Anthropic's Console, the Claude API runs on prepaid credits: once they are used up, the API stops until you buy more, and the declined card is replaced under Settings > Billing with the pencil icon next to the current payment method (Anthropic's API billing article).

When no card works: the Claude API and Claude Code on a Kunavo balance

Kunavo is an independent API gateway, not Anthropic. It sells Claude API access per token from a prepaid balance, Claude Code runs on the same key, and the balance can be topped up with a local method instead of the card that was declined. The balance never expires, and a request that fails costs nothing (billing docs). Two limits before you start: it pays for API tokens, never for a claude.ai subscription or Anthropic's Console, and a card your bank refuses may be refused at Kunavo's checkout too, so pick a method from the table rather than trying the card again.

The Korean domestic card row is still a card: whether a card your bank has blocked for overseas payments goes through there is not confirmed, and the Korean guide says what to pick when it does not. Any checkout shown in a currency other than US dollars carries Stripe's 2–4% conversion fee inside the exchange rate, which holds for 24 hours (Stripe's Adaptive Pricing docs). Japan, Canada, Australia and Mexico, among others, get cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link only, which does not help when the card is the problem. Every method by country, card wallets included, is in Pay for Claude without a credit card.

Before you top up:

  • Start small. Pay the $10 minimum first to see that your method goes through, then add more.
  • Do not cycle through cards. After too many payment attempts in a short time, Kunavo pauses new top-ups for a few hours as a guard against card testing. If that happens, reply to any Kunavo email.
  • Bank debits take days. ACH and Bacs credit the balance only when they settle, and the order shows “processing” until then, so do not pay a second time.

From top-up to Claude Code

  1. Create a Kunavo account with an email address or a Google account.
  2. Open Billing, choose an amount, and on Stripe's page pick the method from the table above.
  3. Create a key under API keys. It starts with sk-kn- and is shown only once.
  4. Point Claude Code at Kunavo and pin its models:
terminal
# Claude Code on the Kunavo balance instead of the declined card
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.kunavo.com # no /v1
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk-kn-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL=claude-opus-5-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL=claude-haiku-4-5
claude

The pins matter because Claude Code's sonnet alias asks for Sonnet 5.5, which Kunavo does not serve: without the SONNET line, /model sonnet and sonnet subagents end in a 404. The opus pin, Claude Opus 5.5, needs Claude Code v2.1.280 or later. Other clients are covered in the Claude Code setup docs, and what Claude Code costs per session is in Claude Code pricing.

The same problem on ChatGPT and the OpenAI API

OpenAI's help center splits the answer the same way:

  • ChatGPT on the web. Subscriptions bought on chatgpt.com take credit and debit cards in every country, and OpenAI's multi-currency billing article adds local methods in some: Pix in Brazil, GoPay in Indonesia and GCash in the Philippines for Go, Plus and Pro; UPI in India for Go and Plus; Kakao Pay, Naver Pay and local cards in Korea; and bank debit via Link in the UK and the EEA, where supported. If your card fails on ChatGPT in one of those countries, OpenAI's own local method is the first thing to try.
  • The OpenAI API. API credits are sold in US dollars only. OpenAI's decline article adds that prepaid cards cannot buy them, only standard credit or debit cards can, and that the card must be issued by a bank in a country OpenAI supports.

The Kunavo balance from the table also calls GPT models through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, so the same local methods cover the API side. For India, see paying for the OpenAI API with UPI; the market pages cover Korea, Poland (BLIK), the Netherlands (iDEAL), Italy (Satispay) and Portugal (MB WAY). The balance pays for API calls, not for ChatGPT Plus.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Claude keep declining my card?

Anthropic's help center says it does not receive detailed decline reasons from the bank that issued the card, so the error on its own will not tell you. Its checklist: the card's billing address and origin country must be on Anthropic's list of supported countries, the billing address must match your bank's records exactly, any 3D Secure check must be completed, the method must be a credit or debit card (PayPal and Venmo are not accepted), and the card must cover the full amount. A retry later, or with another method, can clear a temporary fault. If all of that checks out, ask the bank that issued the card why it declined the payment (read October 10, 2026).

What happens when my Claude Pro or Max payment fails?

Anthropic's billing FAQ says that when the payment method fails, the account is downgraded, so a paid plan can suddenly show as free. On claude.ai, open Settings > Billing, check the recent payment status and use Update next to your payment method to enter a card that works; it is charged at the next renewal. A subscription bought in the Claude app for iOS or Android is paid through the App Store or Google Play, and its card is changed in that store account (read October 10, 2026).

Will a card that Anthropic declined work on Kunavo?

Not necessarily. If your bank blocks the card for online or foreign payments, it may refuse Kunavo's checkout too. The way around a refused card is a local method instead: Cash App Pay or ACH in the United States, Pay by Bank in the UK, Ireland and Finland, iDEAL in the Netherlands, BLIK in Poland, Pix in Brazil, UPI in India, or KakaoPay and Naver Pay in South Korea. Do not try several cards in a row: after too many payment attempts in a short time, Kunavo pauses new top-ups for a few hours.

Can I still use Claude Code if my card is declined?

Yes, on an API key instead of a subscription. Claude Code reads ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN, so it can run on a Kunavo key whose balance you top up with a local method, from $10. Pin the model variables too, because Claude Code's sonnet alias asks for a model Kunavo does not serve. You pay per token, and the balance never expires; it does not restore a Claude Pro or Max plan.

Why is my card declined on ChatGPT or the OpenAI API?

OpenAI's help center says it typically does not receive detailed decline reasons from banks either. It points to the card details and billing address, the funds, 3D Secure prompts, banks that block online or international payments by default, prepaid cards (they cannot buy API credits) and cards issued outside the countries it supports. ChatGPT on the web also takes local methods in some countries, such as Pix in Brazil and UPI in India for some plans, but OpenAI API credits are sold in US dollars only (read October 10, 2026).

The price of each Claude model is in Claude API pricing, and the cheapest ways to run it are in the cheapest Claude API.
