Kilo Code and Cline both let you separate the coding client from the model provider. The useful choice is which agent workflow and billing route you want to operate. Kilo combines its clients with a model gateway and platform services. Cline offers its own clients and access options, with an explicit Plan/Act workflow. The Kilo product overview and Cline overview describe their current surfaces. Compare the exact client you intend to install. Features, entitlement and settings can differ between an editor extension, a CLI and a hosted service.
Start with the planning and review loop
Cline's Plan and Act modes give you a clear point to inspect an approach before implementation. It also lets you select different models for those modes. This is useful when you want to review scope, commands and assumptions before editing, or evaluate whether a different implementation model suits the task.
Kilo documents model selection and per-agent configuration. If its broader platform is the reason you are considering it, name the feature you need and include that feature in the trial. A comparison that tests only a local chat cannot tell you whether a remote workflow or team control meets your requirements.
Neither an extra mode nor a larger model catalog establishes better code. Give each client the same initial commit and acceptance condition. Compare how easily you add context, interrupt a mistaken approach, inspect a diff and resume after feedback. Those are observable parts of your work rather than a universal ranking.
Separate three ways of paying for a model
- Buy access from the client platform. Read what its included allowance or credits cover, what additional usage costs, and whether other platform services draw from the same balance.
- Bring a provider credential through a gateway.Check the supported provider, the route used and which dashboard records the inference bill.
- Configure a provider directly in the client.Check its protocol, model IDs and capabilities independently of the platform's managed catalog.
Kilo's billing documentation states that inference is charged at upstream rates and credit purchases carry a separate 5% processing fee. Its gateway BYOK and direct custom-provider setup are distinct routes. Cline's pricing page and model-access documentation describe its own choices. Avoid comparing one product's plan fee with the other's bare token rate.
Use the same provider when that answers your question
If you want to compare the clients rather than two different billing products, choose the same model and external provider where supported. Kunavo lists Claude Sonnet 4.6 at $1.20 input and $6.00 output per million tokens. Identical rates still allow different task bills: the clients can assemble different context, use caches differently and make different numbers of attempts.
Follow the Kilo Claude API setup or Cline Claude API setup. Keep each client's credentials and selected model identifiable. A manual custom-provider entry does not mean Kunavo is listed in the client's built-in directory, and configuring the coding agent does not establish support for every hosted platform feature.
A first trial with a usable result
Choose a bug with a failing test, or a small behavior change with an acceptance check you can run. Use separate working copies and ask for a plan before implementation. Let each client finish the same bounded change, then record the result using this template:

Repeat with a second task that exercises your normal tools. If one setup works well only after extensive intervention, that matters even if its first response was faster or its model rate was lower.

Is Kilo Code better than Cline?

Run a representative repository task in the particular clients you plan to use before judging output quality or total cost.
Do both Kilo and Cline support external API providers?
Yes. Both document provider configuration, including compatible endpoints. A direct custom provider and a provider key routed through a managed gateway are different paths. Check the endpoint, protocol and active account rather than assuming a key entered in one place configures every feature.
Is Cline free while Kilo is paid?
That comparison mixes software with model access. Both offer client software and multiple ways to access models. Cline documents free model options, usage billing and ClinePass; Kilo offers gateway credits, Kilo Pass and provider connections. The selected route determines the charges and limits.
Can I compare both using Kunavo?
