# Before moving a chat client to another API gateway

Published by Kunavo, 2026-10-03. This is a migration checklist, not an end-to-end client compatibility result. The linked guides distinguish documented configuration from runtime tests.

1. Save your working provider configuration and keep that route available.
2. Record the client version, exact model ID, base URL, context limit and output limit. For Kunavo's OpenAI-compatible route the base URL is `https://api.kunavo.com/v1`; use a currently available model from the catalog.
3. Store the key in the client's secret field or environment variable. Do not paste keys into shared configs, screenshots or issue reports.
4. Budget all input: system prompt + retrieved chunks + repeated conversation history + tool definitions. Output, cache writes and cache reads have separate rates. A wallet deposit is not the estimated cost of one task.
5. Configure the chat provider first. Keep embeddings separate: Kunavo does not currently provide an embedding model.
6. Send one short, bounded conversation. Confirm that it succeeds and read the usage and charge recorded by your provider. This call may incur normal API charges.
7. Test your actual requirements separately: streaming, tool calls, images, structured output, history length and cancellation. A successful text reply alone does not verify these capabilities.
8. Compare the client's cost display with the provider's recorded bill. LibreChat's local token-price table can differ from the provider's rates.
9. If a required feature fails, restore the saved route. Do not move unattended workloads until your own checks pass.
